Ali Farka actually was influenced by John Lee Hooker, among others. The Mississippi Delta in America, is the birthplace of the blues, originating from overworked field hands’ songs of despair and misery, loss, etc. Mali music was cheerful, upbeat, celebratory, and quite rhythmic, but not blues.

Abdoul Barry No. Blues originated in the Mississippi delta region of the U.S. with the first recordings in n the late 20’s, arising from hardship and strife. Traditional African music, like many indigenous types of music, was certainly rhythmic, repetitive, but cheerful, upbeat, lacked blues chord structure, scales, etc. It didn’t remotely resemble the blues. Ali Farka, came much later, and was actually influenced by John Lee Hooker, not the other way around. Ascribing origins to Africa robs early blues artists of their rightful heritage. There is a modern tendency to grant origin status to Africa for other things as well, which is patent bull shit.

Ali Farka was certainly influenced by John Lee Hooker and the Mississipi Delta, but only in the sense of using the modern guitar. It is still very much Northern Malian music that Farka plays but rather than using the djarka or other African instruments, he adapted it to the modern guitar. Also, not all African music is cheerful and upbeat, it'd be a mistake to generalise the entirety of different musical traditions as simply upbeat.

Ben H You say the “influence goes both ways”, so by that reasoning, John Lee Hooker and Delta blues players would have been influenced by Mali guitarists, but that’s just not the case. Blues is a distinctly American art form, originating in the songs of black field workers along a specific region in the river delta, with definite chord structure, scale patterns, etc., before KZbin, before t.v., and predating radio and recordings. I’ve lived and studied Saharan music of Toure’s time and before, and it is largely cheerful, rhythmic, and lacks blues characteristics. It more closely resembles other indigenous music, than it does blues.
