Afrodelic (Victor Diawara) presents a special album: a tribute to his father’s memory and childhood in Mali
"I have put together all my musical and life experiences, my childhood, my youth, my love for my father, my music and Mali, the country I grew up in debut album“Dunsunkun Hakili” (memories of the heart), ”begins musician Victor Diawara.
Starting Sunday June 5th, the album can be heard and purchased on digital online platforms.
According to a press release, the date of his appearance was chosen because June 5th is Father's Day in Lithuania.
"Almost all of the texts are poems written by my father, a famous local intellectual, and poet Gaoussou Diawara, in which the lyrics speak about the importance of love and tolerance, feelings for my mother and grandmother, and the urging of young people to take action in their lives," says Diawara.
It was thanks to his father that Victor became very interested in music as a child. “My dad was a creator, a writer, part of the local bohemia, constantly encouraging a wide variety of performers.
I remember when I used to return home from boarding school in Germany, he met me with a bunch of new records/cassettes. Together we listened to and discussed the latest performers from Mali. Indeed, this album is a tribute to my country, a place full of musical gold and diamonds such as Ali Farka Toure, Fatoumata Diawara, Oumou Sangare, Toumani Diabate and others. There are even some Grammy winners among them, ”says Diawara.
It is a very eclectic album with traditional African instruments such as ngoni, balafon, cora mixed with funk, pop, afrobeat, electronic sounds. Drums, guitars and other instruments that blend in with electronic arrangements and lyrics sung in French and Bambara can take everyone to Victor Diawara’s homeland, at least for a short time.
"My childhood was wonderful - my dad wrote plays and my mother put them on as a theater director. Our house was always full of actors, writers, musicians. There was a stage here where rehearsals were held regularly. I often became an actor as well when there were roles for kids.
I was constantly surrounded by contrasts. "I attended an international school, where the kids of diplomats and other foreigners living in Mali studied, and when I returned, I drank from the well and ran barefoot through the streets with local children," V. Diawara recalled his childhood days.
The road to this first Afrodelic album was a long one.
"I started creating it thirteen years ago, in 2009, when I went on a long vacation to Mali. I set up a studio at home and started working together with local artists. However, when I returned to Lithuania, other projects appeared, and music venue/cultural centre Loftas was created, which required my full attention.
After finally discovering the time and remembering the results of the holiday in mali, I tried to find what we had recorded, but unfortunately the data was gone. I didn't give up. I went back to Bamako in 2015 and we were making music once again with the same local musicians. Later, other projects distracted me from finishing the album, but after my father's death, I realized that the time had come for this project, "said Diawara about the story of the release of the album" Dusunkun Hakili ".
The beginning of Afrodelic was strongly supported by Diawara's father. He took part in rehearsals and concerts there, encouraged him not to forget his roots and admired the result. Diawara makes no secret - one of his biggest current dreams - is to present the album in Mali.
The first singles of Afrodelic have been very well received by the international community. Weleli has been broadcast on France's largest radio stations, such as RFI and Virgin France.
