They should've played the relegation game before the Pacific Championship final. Absolutely ridiculous scheduling. At least the Kiwis have blooded some good young talent during this tournament Keano Kini the obvious standout, also the young wing McLean looks like a gem of a player. Tonga will be strong again next year as will a full strength Samoa with Crichton, To'o etc.. but it will also be good to see a full strength Kiwis for next year's Pacific Championship, they were missing a lot of gun players this tournament (Hughes, Dylan Brown, NAS, Mulitalo) to name a couple.

That is the very reason why the 19th team from PNG in the NRL is very important. PNG needs to have Kumuls players with NRL level playing experience so that they can match fitness levels and playing experiences as exhibited by Tier 1 nations from the Pacific like Australia, NZ and Tonga. There were only about three NRL players in the PNG team that got thrashed by NZ yesterday - The defeat was expected but not by such a big margin. We will meet again another time.

PNG needs a proper development plan to breed rugby players so we can compete at the top level. 2-3 years experience in the Nrl is ok but rugby awareness, discipline (especially mentally) and basic rugby skills are developed when one is around 13-18 years old. Australia and NZ have these programs starting from a very young age and are boastful of their performances on the international stage. Even the majority of pacific islanders, including New Zealanders who are elite athletes in the Nrl and are now representing their own country has undergone some good development programs in Aussie. PNG needs this if they want better results. Otherwise it's going to be the same type of results year in year out.
