problem is 147 thunders are shorter than 148 thunders, an extra variable that will change up the muscle memory. Probably wouldn’t matter to Tom tho lmao

By the math, having three speed rings on every axle instead of one adds an 1/8” to the truck. 147s can turn into 8.125s. It’s weird but it works.

i also switched from 8 to 8,25 twiwn tails, i think you should have set it up with new trucks to size right away. the truck offset makes honestly way more difference then the extra deck width. also then your bushings are fresh and you dont have grooves in your trucks yet so you can take full advantage of the twin tail

Consider that Thunder 148 (8.25) are not just wider, they also come with a different height (147 team = 50mm, 147 forged = ~49mm, 148 team = 52mm, 148 forged = 51mm). Good news is, kingpin clearance is a bit better with 148. In fact I like 148 better but I got awakened and moved to venture hi ;).

Does really have a difference between thunder 148 Standard and 148 Lights ? I hesitate between the two. I come from an 8 with 139 Hollows indy and I want to change with an 8.1 or 8.2 but with a fairly short length for my little legs, so I was wondering which was the best 148 to take !

I went bigger too, and I feel that allowing yourself to extend your style becomes possible, one thing I remember doing right away was placing my feet closer together and wanting to pop even higher than ever, and trusting that different experience, and man! Bigger and faster happens when you just let it, and it's so rewarding. I'm so stoked to hear this, you're like my favorite skater and I just hope you enjoy the ride even more now! I'm a taller guy and I've always felt kickflips and switch flips feel better on longer boards felt better and I believe it's because the length helps with keeping the board stay straight in the air. I'm 6'2" and skate 8.38 x 32.25 and 8.75 x 32.5. If you are a bigger person more wood means you will probably not break boards as often. but they are heavy so get lighter trucks and smaller wheels or don't skip leg day. Wheelbase definitely effects things but I've been skating for 25 years 14.25 to 14.5 seems to be what works for me, but I have a theory that wheelbase is a size that should be determined by rider physical size or what the skater is skating. But I've noticed taller skater 6'+ going short wb, it not really working out and going but up or skater that skate real fast (bowl\transition\vert\hill bombing). Sorry for the nerdy term paper.

Was looking forward to this video for this reason, would love to see Tom try one of those 8.2's or an 8.125 with the shorter wheelbase and hear his thoughts. Been doing the same myself with a set of thunder 148's which thankfully run both widths perfectly, 149's would maybe be a tad too wide personally on an 8.2.

The pointier nose doesn't have the bulk to flick the kickflip closer to where your hardware is causing you to have to extend your flick further out and the smaller trucks doesn't give you the same range of where you can pinch the grind resulting in you not being able to get as much angle when you do pinch into the grind

It’s interesting seeing pros talk about the details of their skateboards. I’ve never known what size I skated, understood the truck size differences, and wheel dynamics back in my skating days. I just bought what I could afford to get. Now that I have adult money, and getting back into skateboarding. Wanting to figure out what board would work for me is something I’m interested in. I’ve heard a lot of stuff about twin tail boards and twin nose boards. Seeing this makes me wanna try giving the twin concept a chance. I use to use my nose as the tail because it was bigger, and it felt like it popped higher. So seeing these kind of decks being a thing, ima have to try it out

I bet changing to wider trucks will feel more different than a wider board and same trucks. Hard to explain, but it will shift the feeling of the grinding surface under your feet. Been there a few times. It's fun to have many setups though. Some people say they can't do it, but for me the more I have, the more I switch it up, the faster I can adapt each time.

I'm convinced board size correlates with skate style as well. Bowl is more popular than ever and I could imagine a bigger board (& trucks!) helps locking in and cruising there. However, for us who like flip in flip out tech stuff the quicker pops and flicks from the smaller boards should simplify the process.

I used to ride an 8.5 board, downsized to an 8.25 for a brief time before i moved to size 8 boards. I'm a size 13 so it might look funny, but a smaller light board helps with pop and allows for more tech tricks. Plus it's for that 90's and 2000's steez factor.

I prefer 8.5 trucks on 8s, like widening stance on a car, makes the board feel more planted and helps with getting into grinds and stops the board from tipping on certain flip tricks for a more level pop off of the nose or tail especially with how tight I skate my trucks

The difference in trucks is definitely a factor too I ride an 8.5 and just went up a size in trucks, it made a world of a difference I have the stage 4 independent 166 size trucks for size 8.5 and above, l never have as such a proper flat feeling on a board Before it felt I was on a teeter totter pivot point with my feet but to have an even surface area combined with an increased smooth turn radius, changed my life… The weight distribution of board over truck is so great with a smaller truck it wants to put weight on the wheel so it’ll pop out of grinds instead of the weight being pressed mainly on the trucks in a proper way… Whatever is doable if you believe lol but definitely a suggestion 🔥🔥🔥

Bro, this is so relatable to me right now, im in th same place considering going up to 8.2 from an 8, i used to religiously ride a 7.75 and my reasoning for favoring it was due to its lite weight requiring less effort to flip. However ive taken to 8s in the last 2 years and thinking an 8.2 would be more suitable to me in a it jus fits my skating and type of tricks i do better kinda way.

I changed my setup from 9.5 symmetrical egg to a 8.25 twin tail. Literally, I am flying. I always had pop but now I have to force my deck to go down because she just wants to fly. :) :) I am flying like a bird man. I ride Chocolate. 14 wb (another big change...from 14.25 to 14.00 wb).

That’s a major change. Wider, longer, longer wheelbase, twintip! That’s gonna take some getting used to.

I started skating in 2001 and ngl, I miss my 7.5's sometimes. Any flip trick was so easy and effortless on those boards...

You can put 2 or 3 washers on the inside of the wheel to bring the wheels out so you can see them I prefer that over the larger truck, let us know how you make out

Really interesting topic! I recently jumped from 7,75 to 7,875 and landet at 8,0 and this feels perfect for me with shoesize 10. Sometimes i think going up to 8,125 would be nice but flipping with 8 feels much better.

I stepped up to 8.25 with a 14 wheel base, 149 Indy’s and once I got use to it everything is easier. I think the wider trucks help a lot with grinds and locking in properly on an 8.25

8.2 looks rad man. I've been having hard times finding decks under 8.5 these day and Santa Cruz is good wood too so I could definitely by grabbing one of these if I see one on the wall :)
