The cool thing about the Play-Choice 10 is that the owner had the ability to swap the carts for new ones to give the arcade game new life. The new games were advertised by a little aluminum display on top of the cabinet. Also, prior to releasing Super Mario Bros. 3 on the NES in the USA, Nintendo first made it available to play on the Play-Choice 10. They did so to boost cart sales. (like that was necessary courtesy of The Wizard) Also, the ROM for Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! was a little different. The ROM was coded so that you enter a unique password prior to playing so that when you came back, you can pick up where you left off. Since the Play-Choice 10 was nothing more than a Pay-For-Play NES, people have developed adaptors so that you can plug-n-play standard NES carts. When that is done, the slot where you plugged in the NES cart shows up at question marks, I think, on the upper monitor/game select screen. Two final bits of trivia, the Play-Choice 10, was either new cabinets or a modified Punch-Out!! cabinet. And there was even a countertop/ bar-top version. Yeah the Neo-Geo cabinets had cartridge swap also. Makes this even more compelling. I will never forget seeing the intro to Super Mario Bros. 3 and having the opportunity to play it a while before it was available outside of Japan. So many memories.

PlayChoice-10 was the only reason why I got to see and play Super Mario Bros. 3 way before it came out of Japan. Didn’t see very many of them back in the day. An arcade in a local bowling alley my friends and I used to hang out at had one. The other titles didn’t catch our attention at all because we either had them or could rent them. The Super Mario 3 intro got us all excited and I clearly remember seeing it for the very first time. Watching raccoon Mario fly through the air and collecting coins. This is why the PlayChoice-10 arcade cabinet brings back memories.

Play Choice 10 was Nintendos way of getting people to try games before they even made it to cartridges. Mario was a big one on Play Choice 10. You could switch out the games that were in the cabinet.

I remember playing Goonies on a Play Choice 10 or something similar. It was the first Goonies that was only released on Famicom in Japan. I never ever saw the game again. I didn't even realize it was a Famicom game back then. I just thought it was this crazy arcade. Years went by and I started to think I imagined the whole thing and that this Goonies "arcade" game didn't actual exist. Not until about 6 or so years ago when I found it was real and it was released in Japan on the Famicom. The other time I remember playing one in the arcade, but it just had games I already had at home and you could only play it for a couple of minutes. Even if you were really good at the game. I didn't like that it was time based play. Anyways, that's my nostalgia for the Play Choice 10.
