Can we continue to improve audio products? I say no. I can say that because I don't have a marketing department to answer to. I will tell you what I truly believe and what other things I do to make my life better. Audio life in this case.

Appreciate your approach of not just spending more thinking it’s going to make a system that much better. End of the day, even a million dollar system can’t sound as good as live music. Chasing perfection that does not exist is a curse. 🤓

A lot of the today "super high end audio products" are just more expensive. They offer nothing more but spend a lot on marketing to build their name and put money on fancy looking chassis to justify their cost. This theory also applies to almost every industry on the planet earth not only audio.

Love this! Couple of years ago, I helped a friend with building him a set of speakers. He had a pair of Spendor BC-1’s. He wanted another pair of three way speakers. I convinced him to go a different route. My argument was, you already have a pair of really good 3 way’s, you should get something wildly different. He agreed, and I built him a pair of double backloaded horns using a single 8” full range driver. To your point, a different experience. At home here I swap out amps/speakers all the time depending on what I want to listen to. Push pull Class A/B tube and solid state. Single ended tube and solid state and class a solid state. Speakers include Cornwalls, ESL57’s, double back loaded horns, Voigt pipes, small Onken styled full range single driver and small sealed coax bookshelf speakers - which I am hoping to bring to market soon :) I am so lucky to be able to change out systems so I can get a completely different audio experience depending on what I feel like listening to. Totally agree with what you are saying in this video. My interest in upgrading has to do with “issues” with what I’m hearing. Problem with different systems can be that I wish I heard more of what I’m getting from a Voigt pipe with a sealed box. And if there is something that doesn’t sound “right”, then changes need to happen. I feel once you have heard something in a system, it can’t be unheard - both good and bad…

Good to hear there are more people out there has multiple systems or gears to switch in and out. I live in a house which has multiple rooms for multiple systems. I just go around to listen to which ever system I want to at that moments. Most of the systems are set up ready to go. Sometime there are two systems in one room. One on each end of the room.

You will have a chance. Not planning to go away anytime soon. The thing is I may have two minds but still only one pair of hand. There is no way I can build enough to flood the market like many other companies. Then they have to invent new looking boxes so they can push more of the same in a different boxes. I will be keep building for the new 20 years.

I appreciate your honestly and integrity. AGY quick question for you, why do some amps sound much more 3d than others? what contributes to this phenomena? is it damping factor, is it lack of noise or something else? is it something that is measurable?
@angela-gilbert
@angela-gilbert 2 ай бұрын
I don't have a black ans white answer for your question. I can only speculate. I know for fact if the power supply being too small will shrink everything. However just the power supply being big enough isn't the only factor. The capacitor in the signal path, connection joint quality also add to the equation. Just two of many more.

Angela Gilbert would it be safe to state that the Preamplifier is the most important link in this chain of multiple amps/speakers? Currently I have a floorstanding and a bookshelf speakers but 4 different amps that I switch depending in the mood and type of music I feel like listening. BUT only one active acitve pre-amp (that I'm really thinking updating; one of yours is in the short list) and one passive pre-amp. Just like said... it works for me! Kudos for all your hard work and commitment to the hobby!
@angela-gilbert
@angela-gilbert 2 ай бұрын
I agree the preamp is the most important part of a 2 channel audio chain. I do the same with one preamp and multiple amps and speakers. It is also the reason I design preamps with small tonal quality adjustments. Then the preamp can change it personality a bit to suit the power amp and speaker. Tonal quality isn't changing frequency response. They are two different things.

I also heard that power amps with lots of power will generally sound coarser/less refined than power amp wirh less power, is rhat true?
@angela-gilbert
@angela-gilbert 2 ай бұрын
That is my general rule of thumb. So yes, I agree with your statement. However, there are speakers which need more power just to open their mouths to start singing. Those Altec Lasing 511s are a good example of that. With less than 50 watts, they simply wouldn't do anything. In those instances, power take priority. Therefore, when or if we can design an amp just suit that or those kind of speakers, the amp should be designed to work 50watt or more. It is like some engine like to run at lower rpm but some need to run at higher rpm to get optimum performance. This is when matching between amp and speaker is important.
@MasterofPlay7

@@angela-gilbert what's the reason behind the coarser sound? Is it because of the transformer?

@angela-gilbert
@angela-gilbert 2 ай бұрын
@@MasterofPlay7 We are getting into a whole new topic. The term "better parts" depends on a lot of factors. What was the amp designed for originally? Are we trying to make the amp does something it was designed or not designed for? Without total understanding of the original design, the so call better parts really has no meaning. It is also the reason I had to walk away from a lot of parts upgrade conversation on FB because a lot of people simply don't have enough basic knowledge to understand what they are getting into.

So whats your typical listening volume? Is there an optimal volume? I usually listen at 56-60db. I would much rather get quality sound at that level than juiced up power amp that doesnt sound good
@angela-gilbert
@angela-gilbert 2 ай бұрын
My typical listening level at the listening chair is around 60db. Occasionally peak to 75db to 80db. That's peak. For testing, I may turn it up to 90 peak for a short period of time. I agree if things don't sound good at lower volume, the system isn't working right.

Spend money on room treatment, that will make the biggest difference in audio sound. After that then look at swapping gear. People keep swapping gear for the sake of swapping. You get caught in an expensive loop of nothingness.
@angela-gilbert
@angela-gilbert Ай бұрын
@@user-ef3hf1et3t Agreed. However, I would like to say spend more effort on room treatment instead of money. Because a lot of room treatment can be made or use typical household items instead of buying purpose built products.
