I just love my Yaesu FT-818nd , I've had one since they were released over 20 years ago,( when they were just FT-817) the battery has always its achelles heel. But its such a fun and rugged rig. I really want to get better internal cells. I carry a 10 AH LIfePo4 around with mine, but if i had my druthers, a good set of higher powered internal batteries would be great! TNX 4 video! 73 ..

@@temporarilyoffline if you have a 3d printer, maybe you can come up with something. Maybe be able to tie it in with your protection rails? I have been wanting an Armloq ( spelling?) With a metal set of rails it would be easier to engineer & prototype something like a battery box. Anyway it's such a great little rig to grab and go, a heavier duty battery attached would be the bees knees. Have fun and play lotsa radio 🙂! 73

I have an 818 and I just use sealed lead acid……cheap reliable and they don’t catch fire if you abuse them when charging. I run a battery until full power won’t work and then I put a fresh one on.

Have you tried using the radio with the alkaline battery tray installed? If I were to travel I would just use that because I can buy AA batteries anywhere. I've have a 4.5 amp/hour Bioenno battery that I use along with the standard 1,900 milliamp hour.

Great Video ! I just got an FT-818 ( off of ebay). Love the features / form factor of the radio - previous owner installed the Windcamp LiPo battery and Thompson power pole adapter - but I cant power from an external (powerpole) source. Is this normal ? or is the radio damaged ...

You should be able to power from an external source - did he include the original power supply as well? If so, remove the PP adapter and test again. If not, check the PP adapter with your multi-meter to see if its providing power all the way through - from PP to barrel jack. Finally if that works, try a factory reset on the radio. Hope that helps!
