I'm a former Anglican priest who converted last year. I was drawn to orthodoxy through it's ecclesiology, thesis and it's understanding of tradition. I appreciate your faithfulness to the Church and her teachings. My big concern for Orthodoxy is the subtle injection of the western mindset into Orthodoxy and its poisonous effect. Keep up the good work, father.

I was raised Greek Orthodox, and have lost my way. I can't stop this intense calling to come back "home". For some reason all of these orthodox beliefs and concepts keep coming up. My grandmother started a couple churches in California, and I feel I have betrayed my family. I pray for forgiveness, and that we may all find the true path. Thank you, Father, this was a really important message for me today.

When I first started watching your video Father I must confess I didn’t like you much. But, that’s the very reason I’ve stuck around. You’ve knocked me over my head a few times with the Truth haha. The truth is I didn’t like the qualities within myself so I looked at you as an “enemy” of my ego and pride. I realized this almost instantly. I’m aware that when I want to reject something it usually means it’s true. May it be blessed. Forgive me for viewing you in a negative light. You are truly exposing the Devil within us all. Yes, indeed the message of the Gospel could not be more profound, that only Jesus Christ saves. We have no right to wipe away over 2000 years of living tradition at the expense of our salvation. There is a very good reason why Christ is known as The Way, The Door, The Narrow Gate. Simply because He is the only way. We forget the commandment "Worship no other gods..." The amazing thing about our faith is that Christ the living God, clothed in flesh shared in our humanity, so that we could share in His Perfect Humanity and Godhood by grace. Heaven came to us, it begins here on earth with Christ the Door.

I don't see how this is controversial. Knowledge in an Orthodox ontology isn't philosophical knowledge, it comes from being, from living and doing. Like he said, the fathers were able to see and use philosophical categories to help people understand and defend the faith, but it wasn't primary. I am a bit hesitant to say never read any philosophy though, I just think it's bad to put it at the top.

Many Christian saints were interested in Greek philosophy, considering it a source of spiritual instruction. For example, it is widely known that St Justin Martyr received a first-class education in the field of classical philosophy, which ultimately led him to believe in Christ. After studying all existing schools of thought, he declared the Christian faith to be the most sublime philosophy. Even after his conversion to Christianity, Saint Justin continued to wear his attire of a philosopher, thus witnessing that there is no contradiction between being a philosopher and a Christian. He was the first among the holy fathers to put forward the idea of Greek Philosophy being an interpretation of the Old Testament for the Gentiles and a preparation for the New Testament. He often referred to the Greek philosophers as “friends of Christ”, and even called Socrates “a Christian before Christ”. St Justin’s ideas was later approved by many holy fathers. But, as we know. This only seems to be “True”. Even St. Justin it seems in his viewpoint didn’t consider that Socrates only was “physically” born in the flesh before Christ. So, if he had any “Christian” qualities this all comes from him being made in the very image of the Holy Trinity. The Law had been written within and on our conscience since the beginning of time itself. “Before Abraham was I am” - Jesus Christ the Son of God. ☦️🕊

Actually Saint Justin most likely was just more wise than myself and realized he’d convert more people this way. Idk. Maybe using the Philosophers as a way to get people to listen to him. Hence his unreal Apology written to the emperor and his Philosopher Son. He was looking to legitimize Christianity so we no longer had to worship in secret with fear of being prosecuted.

I couldn't agree more... If we read the Apologies of St. Justin Martyr we will immediately understand the inferior ideas of the pre-Christian poets -- which the Saint picks apart. Many of those great poets may have closely approximated natural truths; but natural wisdom does not save. The wisdom from God above declares that one must be baptised into Jesus Christ in order to transcend death, which, to the natural man is pure foolishness.

Saint Luke 13:24-30 “Strive to enter through the narrow door, for many, I tell you, will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough. After the master of the house has arisen and locked the door, then will you stand outside knocking and saying, ‘Lord, open the door for us.’ He will say to you in reply, ‘I do not know where you are from.’ And you will say, ‘We ate and drank in your company and you taught in our streets.’ Then he will say to you, ‘I do not know where [you] are from. Depart from me, all you evildoers!’ And there will be wailing and grinding of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God and you yourselves cast out. And people will come from the east and the west and from the north and the south and will recline at table in the kingdom of God. For behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.”

Philosophy (from Greek: φιλοσοφία, philosophia, 'love of wisdom') is the systematized study of general and fundamental questions, such as those about existence, reason, knowledge, values, mind, and language. Such questions are often posed as problems to be studied or resolved. Some sources claim the term was coined by Pythagoras (c. 570 - c. 495 BCE); others dispute this story, arguing that Pythagoreans merely claimed use of a pre-existing term. Philosophical methods include questioning, critical discussion, rational argument, and systematic presentation. Historically, philosophy encompassed all bodies of knowledge. A practitioner of philosophy was known as a philosopher. From the time of the Ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle to the 19th century, "natural philosophy" encompassed astronomy, medicine, and physics. For example, Newton's 1687 Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy later became classified as a book of physics. In the 19th century, the growth of modern research universities led academic philosophy and other disciplines to professionalize and specialize. Since then, various areas of investigation that were traditionally part of philosophy have become separate academic disciplines - namely, the social sciences, such as psychology, sociology, linguistics, and economics. Today, major subfields of academic philosophy include metaphysics, which is concerned with the fundamental nature of existence and reality; epistemology, which studies the nature of knowledge and belief; ethics, which is concerned with moral value; and logic, which studies the rules of inference that allow one to derive conclusions from true premises. Other notable subfields include the philosophy of religion, the philosophy of science, political philosophy, aesthetics, the philosophy of language, and the philosophy of mind.

Were not the Church Fathers steeped in Platonism? They were all classically educated and used their knowledge to beautify the Church (to put it in Saint Gregory of Nyssa's words). It doesn't seem wise to flee late Western overemphasis on reason into the arms of fideism. Many of the Church Fathers were philosophers by any definition of the word, but what we should be paying attention to is how they wielded their wisdom.

Steeped in platonism? No. They were well versed in the language and terminology and basic texts of their day as educated men. They used all of that - the terminology - in order to bring and preach the Gospel to the Greeks.
@zachwillits8451
@zachwillits8451 Жыл бұрын
@The Orthodox Ethos They were not just well versed for the sake of making the Gospel digestible for others, they sincerely internalized many basic principles of Greek philosophy as a part of their own theology. To say that they merely presented themselves under the guise of Greek philosophy as an evangelical tactic is simply speculative beyond reason. The Church Fathers were philosophical to the core. They used Hellenic terms, they used Aristotelian proofs for God, they Christianized Platonic forms, and they saw no issue with it as a genuine expression of faith. To be specific, it is hard to deny that Saint Augustine, Saint Gregory of Nyssa, Saint Maximus the Confessor, and Saint John of Damascus were not philosophers. There is a large section of Saint John of Damascus' Fount of Knowledge dedicated to pure philosophy. Why is this a scandal? There's nothing wrong with using our God-given intellects to engage in philosophy so far as we make the Gospel our measure of truth and subject our philosophizing to Christ.

@@zachwillits8451 Forgive me...but, I'll be acutely succinct here, Christ being The Logos and Wisdom of God created the world as it says in Holy Writ, "in Wisdom The Lord laid the foundations of The Heavens and Earth!" And since He is The Word of God..His Speech permeates the creation i.e. Romans 1, Psalm 18/19. But the fall occluded that Speech; Voice of Truth in a sense and made it dim. So Christ comes as Fr. Peter states and enfleshes Himself and brings The Knowledge of God; Wisdom unoccluded and Life and Immortality to Light through The Gospel in a Hellenistic period. He then employed Apostles to preach and dictate/write to all the world employing mostly Greek language to convey ideas about Truth. But the use of Greek was not a "Christianizing of The Greek," but rather the Greek returning to it's proper place; Glorification of God The Word (Psalm 28/29) It's like when the Israelites left Egypt they left with gold that had been used for idol worship and the like but Joshua and camp took it, consecrated it and offered to Yahweh using it for the Tabernacle, thus the gold was brought back to it's proper "form," and purpose! Forgive me!

@@orthodoxrocks9644 Forgive me, but regarding your useage of the Israelite's repurposing of the treasures of Egypt, this seems more philosophy outside of the Church can indeed be very good. Saint Gregory of Nyssa uses this same image to suggest that the Church can and even must adorn herself with the wisdom she finds that is agreeable. In the history of Christian thought, it is simply a fact that Platonism is a school of philosophy the Church has deemed very good indeed.

All others are "thieves," as Jesus said in John 10! We as Orthodox don't assent to everything that came out of Philosophy but we do bring what was stolen back to its proper place. Father, please quit using silly clickbait titles, you're being dishonest to the definition of "Philosophy" as it means 'love of wisdom'. As Christians, should we not use words faithful to their meaning? This is why we have "St Justin the Philosopher" and not "St Justin the God-Seer" as he was a true lover of wisdom, any true lover of wisdom knows that Christ must be the center of thought. The Church Fathers were true philosophers. A better title would be "Without Christ, Philosophy is useless' Just because someone calls themselves a 'philosopher', doesn't mean they are one, and are instead justifying themselves. Just as someone who calls themselves a 'Christian' isn't always a slave of Christ, but just mindlessly adopting the term.

What you wrote is true. I would like to add, though, that we often see words as _univocal_ when discussing doctrine; but words are _equivocal_ and are based on context. And since words are equivocal, from the talk above one should understand "philosophy" as "vain philosophy", as from the Greek poets. In any event, clarification from him would have been helpful, as you wrote.

In ‘Christianizing’ Hellenism, or translating Revelation from Hebraic to Greek, they used terms and categories common to it; but to say they ‘thrived’ on it is not accurate. Those who did actually rely upon it, such has Aquinas, made a muddle of things after all. We could say the Church Fathers explained what the philosophies were groping toward, correcting them, filling in what was lacking, even redefining terms to express the true doctrine; in a sense sanctifying it; not being instructed from it.

@@eikon7001 Well yes sure but you can’t deny that church fathers like St Augustine converted because of Neoplatonism which got him out of mannecheism and how people like St Ambrose used this to drive people out of that heresy. It is also worth mentioning that our explanation of the Eucharist of substance and accidents is directly from the metaphysics of Aristotle.

@@seraphim3TN Actually he knows the Faith well on a knowledge level, which is all he purports to teach. So dismissing everything is erroneous to say since he is only teaching what the Church teaches no matter his methods.

No one can show you God. What you are asking for is like a blind man asking one who sees to show him the sun. They can only show you how to cure your eyes. These are the saints who throughout the centuries teached us how to cleanse our eyes so God can be transparent to us.

Unless you learn how to perceive of God in imitation of and rumination on the writings and examples of saints you will fail completely. You will be like an astronaut who sets off into the cosmos in order to find a single pearl of supreme value without the slightest idea of where to direct his craft. Such a man will eventually despair and go mad as he nears death while becoming more cognizant of the probability of attaining to his desired object. It is futility itself.

@billkotas9049 1 second ago Before you do anything just do this please, put aside your beliefs for just a moment, you can always pick them back up, sit for a moment by yourself and consider who you really are, that is the absolute truthfully real you...just give it a shot and if it doesn't work for you then proceed as you have decided, nothing more asked of you...
