I still wished at the end of the movie the son goes to the father, and he Salutes him. The Father seeing this see's that he has become cold and empty like him, so the FATHER goes up to him and hugs him, and doesn't want his son to grow up like him, empty. So he then realizes that his son having emotions is what still makes him human.

@@FireKAT91 I'm slowly getting over it but she's still gonna have a piece of my mind! 😇 Also have an idea that no one had(probably): Cypher Raige gradually reconnects with his emotions during the course of the movie and at the end learns that he has nothing to fear about showing his human side. That he became emotionless because he couldn't let the fear resurface and and endanger his familly and people? Because as it is I don't get why he's so stoic: fear is one of many emotions and here the purpose of Raige's very cold behaviour isn't explored, like at all! To be fair, there is a way they could have made the atmosphere thing make sense: Instead of it being any kind of lack of oxygen or what-not, establish that it's because there's too much oxygen in the air. Everyone complains that Cypher Rage's character swallows all charisma from a Will Smith performance, when he tells the story of his first ghosting and his reaction to seeing the sun shining through his blood in the water was 'wow, that's really pretty' it atually got me thinking about a what if scenario: to combat the fact the ursa smell fear humans soldiers are taught and trained to *like* violence, so everytime they are facing down an ursa they are supposed to relish the fight as a way to push down any fear they might have, instead of being stoic and calculative they are hotblooded and daring. Just think about the ramifications such a thing would have in their society, like people being desynthisized to violence from an early age, maybe have a scene of a child watching some super violent educational program on their version of TV and laughing at it while the parents nod aprovingly in the background, maybe we would see Kitai go through some actually traumatazing training as way to justify the line 'in the classroom you are an outstanding ranger but in the field you collapse', he has the knowledge of how to fight but inflicting pain on a living creature is difficult to him. He could be that way because of his sister's influence, instead of just paying lip service maybe the sister reading Moby Dick was actually frowned upon by people cause the book has some ideological ideas that don't match their society on top of having a fairly obvious 'Save the earth' aesop, and also Cypher's catalyst to become the best Ursa killer could be that he's using his rage (heh) of having his daughter killed by one of the Ursa to overcloud his fear of them while he fights and that creates a rift between him and his son cause Kitai not only hid from a fight but instead of getting angry at the ursa he would be mostly sad and gained a deeply ingrained fear of them from watching his sister getting killed, since the mother says in the movie Kitai is a sensitive kid and he even gives up being a ranger by the end of the movie it would make more sense for Kitai's character to want to work through his feelings of sadness with his family while Cypher just wants to push his own sadness down along with his fear using anger. Then when they land on earth Cypher is constantly pushing Kitai to be more fearless and violent, but it would become clear as time goes by that's not the way to go, the monkey encounter would be a good way to illustrate that, Kitai only starts to be more focused when Cypher begins showing fear for Kitai's safety and that he cares about how Kitai feels, first about the whole crashlanding thing and then near the end about the sister's death, but as Kitai gets near the ursa Cypher would become restless again cause he already lost one kid to it and his remaining kid would have to face it while he's killometers away without being able to help, I just think that accomplishing things *despite* being scared is a better message than just "don't be scared ever". This whole rant began cause the line 'wow, that's really pretty' made me think Cypher was a bloodthirsty sociopath instead of the stoic human weapon they wanted me think to he was and I realised a military dad showing his fear to his son and FOR his son would have made a much better story but I apologize profusely for how long this ended up being XD

I love to see Will Smith stretching himself in terms of acting range at a time when many actors can just stick with what works. It's not bad to find your niche (quite the opposite) but variety is the spice of life for an artist. I also really want to see the kind of actor Jaden would've been if that's where his passions actually lay (it's clear now that music is his true love) and he got roles that had nothing to do with his dad, producing, writing, directing or acting in the film. I feel like he would have eventually reached Daniel Radcliffe's level where he does weird roles that have no connection to each other but his skills improve monumentally with each one and we're always excited for what he'll do next. However....both Will & Jaden should've known this wasn't going to work. Some ideas are great and were eventually worked into better films. For ex, the futuristic tech that is inspired by or built around the agriculture or the culture of the actors = Black Panther. But so much of this script is screaming, "THIS ISN'T AS COOL AS YOU THINK IT IS!". The better version of this movie would've kept it in the real world. Will Smith is either an army vet or the chief of police and his obvious CPTSD is causing emotional constipation that his son (played by a more seasoned actor. Sorry Jaden. Maybe you can be the older son who gets murdered early on like the sister in this version) interprets this as coldness or disinterest. The plot continues as normal with at least 30% of the fat cut. Jaden learns how to be hard/cunning in a dire situation instead of moping, while retaining his kind heart, and the experience forces Will into counseling for his CPTSD so he can be more loving with his fam. I made myself sad because that's not the movie we got.

On the facebook page I had said when this was announced, and I'll stand by it- this movie really expected too much from Jaden. He's fine as an actor I'm sure, and I agree there are parts in this when I noticed that, but another youtuber put it, I think it was FanBoyFlicks- that you have one of the most charismatic men in cinematic history playing everything flat and steady, and you have the teenager who, in real life, wants to come across as cool trying to do all these over emotional scenes, and then you give him an accent to struggle with. And I'm adding... If he was able to not have to think of that accent, I think he would have been able to give a more consistent performance, add to it that his first real, starring role he's pretty much carrying the entire movie? Yeah, his dad was "in scenes" with him, but not physically in the scene, the kid had nobody to act across from. They made a big deal with Tom Hanks and Will Smith being in movies where it's just them carrying it... and Jaden got that first major speaking role out. (He was in Pursuit of Happiness when he was really little right?) I just feel there was no way for him, with his limited experience, to have a fair shot of showing whatever acting chops he has, the expectations were way too high, and that isn't his fault, I'm not taking a jab at him.

"Battlefield Earth" meets "After Last Season" meets "Taking Earth". But as melodramatic as "How I Became Yours", just much more abysmal.

This just occurred to me: anybody else see that this movie might have a good allegory for Will and Jayden's relationship in real life inside it? Will wants his son to be like him, but Jayden is his own person, so Will makes a scenario (this movie) for Jayden to be like him (a cool action hero - was the intention, anyway), and only after being who he wants him to be is Will proud of Jayden. I hope I'm wrong, because that is f@#*ed up if that's anything close to the truth.
@alexandresobreiramartins94614 жыл бұрын
Nah, you're probably correct, judging from the rest of Will's carrer.

Oh dear, that reminds me of a quote in an interview where Will said he had to hire someone to teach Jaden how to run because “women make a lot of decisions about whether you can be an action hero based on how you run” Which is a weird-ass thing to say anyway, but bodes ill for Jaden considering the way he runs in this movie

They didn't rip apart the stupid science in the plot. I felt like Battlefield Earth with this. It's equal to the suspension of disbelief of the caveman flying fighter jets. Humans being away for a thousand years, the air would be pure. If the air was so toxic, it wouldn't of been full of plant and animal life. If it frosted over every night, there wouldn't be any plant life. So stupid.

NO ADULT punching a kid in the face can be considered proper, onscreen or anywhere - all the more in our post-Oscar slap ('administered' by Will Smith himself) era!

I think I'm gonna go ahead and make a zero-budget movie on Will Smith's original idea. Father-Son conflict meets man vs. nature. If you want a log line, it's "The Revenant" meets "The Godfather."

Adding to the scene of Katai nearly passing out and then blacking out from the lack of oxygen, the fucking eagle should have popped out of nowhere and cracked a pod into his mouth.

At the begining I think the word you're looking for is "organic". Edit: Now that you mentionned putting a sword on a drone... Why Jaden didn't pick one of them and put the beacon on it? Press the goddam button, tie it on the damn thing and let your father fly it somewhere a signal can reach!

I just looked it up and the character in this that's played by Tormund Giantsbane (the actors name is Kristofer Hivju) is credited as "Security Chief," on imdb, for After Earth. His character doesn't even have a name lol. I actually had no idea that Tormund was in this, even though I've seen the clip of him screwing with Jayden a few times, and even when you showed that clip and mentioned it was him, I still didn't fully recognize him until I pulled up his imdb and played the clip next to a picture of him as Tormund, only then could I see it. Without his wild red hair and bushy red beard it's almost impossible for me to recognize him lmao. I mean, I recognized him when he was in The Thing (2011) because he had his bushy red beard and wild red hair. He was also speaking with a similar accent to his as Tormund in The Thing (2011). In After Earth, he's speaking with the dumb speech impediment accent which makes it even harder lol.
