I think Qianlong was caught off guard by Ruyi's cutting her hair because in his head he grouped her with all these other women who want something from him in one way or another; he thought deposing her would make her fear losing her position. What he forgot was that Ruyi never asked for the position of Empress, he just wanted to be his beloved loyal wife from the beginning, and now she's had enough of it and wanted to leave for good. He did not realize that Ruyi would have the courage to actually want to leave him behind should push comes to shove.
@ellenhage36117 ай бұрын
Exactly. He thought she would always be there to take abuse and still love him. He know she was the only one that sincere to him. She didn't have a powerful clan so it made it easy for him to keep abusing her, accusing her, lie to her.

Poor Shu died in pure agony because of him as did many of his wives. Wei Yanwan murdered like a lunatic yet even she admitted to learning how to scheme from the emperor who had schemed to force himself onto the widowed Han Princess and make Shu infertile until she died from depression. When Empress Xian was alive, she obeyed everything the emperor wanted and more, did his dirty work for him - yet he treated her like dirt when she was dying so she could not even die in peace and again, died in sorrow. What sealed Ruyi's decision to separate from the emperor imo was his increasingly suffocating, egocentric and inhumane humiliation of Ling Yunche. He castrated the loyal and Heroic Ling Yunche based on nothing but rumors and whimsy. All along, the emperor simply wanted to blame anyone who held affection for Ruyi for 'ruining the royal reputation' meanwhile he OPENLY partied with prostitutes. Hypocrite! Ruyi even forgave the emperor when the emperor accused her of cursing their son after giving birth painfully. She wasn't even allowed to grieve her own babies' death 💀. He was always the cause of his son's deaths by manipulating his wives and neglecting them for new concubines until he got bored of them, needed sons, or needed a new backer in the palace....The HUGE irony is he always complained of his subjects/ministers being insincere to him but he was the epitome of insincerity. Qianlong was not fit to be emperor at all, all he did was kill INNOCENT people and imprison his subjects and concubines for life - forever locked inside the Forbidden Palace. I always wished Qianlong would bow his head to all the dead like Wei Yanwan had done - he was the true villain who murdered his own people he claimed to 'protect'. @@Damselndistresss

The only three women in his life who tells him the truth is the Dowager Empress, Empress Ruyi and Consort Rong. None of them have any ulterior motives against him. In fact, Consort Rong never wanted to be in his harem and only reluctantly accepted it because Ruyi’s excellent persuasive skills. In the past, anytime he was stressed and troubled, he would seek Ruyi’s company because she brought him peace and he was able to be freely himself, and not always be expected as the Emperor. Eventhough he has so many concubines, children and servants, advisers and millions of subjects, he is the loneliest man. He has to keep people at arms length because most of them either wants to use him or usurps his power. Ruyi was always there, quietly listening without judgement and only speak when he asked for her input. She’s very smart , unbiased, logical, fair and tactical in her approach and she knows how to diffuse situations. She’s a great diplomatic skills that the emperor admires and that’s why he was able to be more open to her about private matters. He never did that with the 1st Empress because he never trusted her. Now, he betrayed Ruyi and broke her heart again and again and she finally had enough and when a woman says she’s done with you, she is truly done with you. Every woman has a breaking point and he broke it and he only has himself to blame.

At what point did Jingse see her father's true face? She should have seen Ling's true face or maybe she realized Ruyi always took the blame for the Emperor's dirty work. In any event I do not see such an epiphany in this episode.
@kelseyoconnor395111 ай бұрын
I agree. in fact when ling's servant begged jingse to save her, jingse didn't ask what happened. little did she know she was trying to save jingse who was seducing the emperor by letting him fall into temptation with ladies. Just like how Ling used her, Jingse's mother was also used by Ling's former mistress. Like mother like daughter. But at least her mother wouldn't have approved of Ling doing something like this.

I feel that Jingse got to see the lies about Ruyi. She grew up hearing her mother say Ruyi was plotting to become Emperess. Remember the former Empress scarified her daughter to remain in good graces with this fool and clan glory. If was all Ruyi wanted she would have turned a blind eye this. She publicly was like I'm done with you and your Empress seat.

@@lvincent7493 True. In the beginning Jingse hated Ruyi because of her mother and was grateful when Ling saved her son. But gratitude only lasts so long. As she made friends with the other consorts she began to hear other points of view.
@盧璘壽로인수11 ай бұрын
psh please, in the original novel it was actually *Jingse who planted the seeds of Qianlong's suspicions toward Wei Yan'wan* (by this time Jingse had become cold to Wei Yan'wan after learning (via Yuhu & Ruyi herself) she lied and took advantage of Empress Xiaoxian's memory (or rather, Qianlong's rose-tinted musings) for her own selfish motives, and that her son Qing'you's lake incident was no simple "accident"; Jingse simply told Qianlong what she discussed with her maternal uncle Fuheng moments after the Haircut™: that Wei Yan'wan has such "a long arm" (Chinese metaphor for "being in the know", i.e. Jinzhong) that she immediately knew what was going to happen in that leisure boat at that moment)
@joiionni218611 ай бұрын
Sorry if I am slow. I am still wondering if this woman and the 3 year old that was attacked by the dog are both named Jingse and why the Emperor would name two of his children the same name. Now, Jingse did inform the Emperor when her spies confirmed that she was teaching her sons to be loyal to her above the Emperor. She despised Ruyi so I doubt she would believe anything she said but Yuhu is different. Some of us do not have the benefit of having read the novel for comparison. Movies do tend to combine characters and switch events for their own reasons. I am also confused by the order of the episodes and that they seem to be edited and shown by different people at the same time. I will say that Jingse has been around long enough to see that things are not what they seem as her father punishes and forgives when it suits him and promotes and changes the names of people after death so that unless people kept secret diaries or there was a local story keeper History would be such a mess nobody looking back could ever figure out the actual truth of anything. Nevertheless, this story is better than any Greek Tragedy by leaps and bounds and the acting is stellar. Unfortunately, some of the captions leave me wondering what was seen that I missed. The use of AI might have something to do with it.

@@joiionni2186 1. though Wei Yan'wan teaching 15th prince Yong'yan disloyalty also happened in the original novel, *Qianlong's distrust in her was already afoot at the time* 2. the confusion with the episodes is understandable: *no thanks to SARFT* , drama editing was haphazard and production was forced to trim down the planned 100+ episodes into the final product 3. unlike Korea's Joseon Dynasty and their objectively reliable "Annals of the Joseon Dynasty", *there is no extant reliable official history of Qing Dynasty* , only extant copies of records about events that happened during Qing Dynasty 2 examples of unreliability due to differeng records: 3.1. 2 concubines of Yongzheng Emperor were bestowed the title of Consort Xi (熹妃) on the same date: Lady Niohuru & Lady Qian (錢氏), which gave rise to the urban myth of Qianlong Emperor's biological mother (4 candidates) 3.2. what happened between Step Empress & Qianlong Emperor: though Qianlong Emperor did confirm Step Empress's Haircut™ (many years later), the circumstances of her downfall vary between 2 sources: Chinese & Korean (Joseon) 4. 3rd princess's "se" is pronounced like "suh", 5th princess's "si" is pronounced as is 5. *East Asian naming culture has the "generation name"* (later adopted by Vietnam & Korea) that is unique to families & clans: *a mnemonic device (usually from a poem) to keep track of the generations of descendants* to simplify the explanation: -Yongzheng Emperor's generation: originally "yin" (胤) but later changed to "yun" (允) when Yongzheng Emperor (Yinzhen) ascended the throne and adopted the original _hanzi_ as his taboo name -Qianlong Emperor's generation: "hong" (弘) -Jiaqing Emperor's generation: "yong" (永); though unchanged, Jiaqing Emperor (Yong'yan) changed his own "yong" to 顒 as his taboo name to avoid inconveniencing the rest of China since 永 is a pretty common word -Daoguang Emperor's generation: "mian" (綿) -Xianfeng Emperor's generation: "yi" (奕) -Tongzhi & Guangxu Emperors' generation: "zai" (載) -Xuantong Emperor's generation: "pu" (溥)

@@盧璘壽로인수 Wow. I feel like it's my first day in Ancient Asian Literature 199. A little History, a little Phonics, a little Genealogy. What is a "taboo" name? You said "si" is pronounced as is. Would that be "see" or "sye" depending on whether the vowel is long or short? Yes, Ling was proven to be two-faced and untrustworthy a number of times. However, the Emperor would conveniently forget those offenses or blame somebody else. In any case Ling could "fall in $h!t and come up smelling like a rose" as my mother used to say. The Emperor kept upholding Ling and believing everything she said. The Dowager Empress knew she was evil but underestimated the degree. Yep, Ling was okay with the Emperor as long as she gave him his deer blood wine and supplied him with prostitutes whenever wanted. How could he believe Ruyi was having affairs with a Priest and Ling Yunche and who knows who else? It is shocking that Rong Pei and Hailan weren't accused. It seems in the last couple of days clips are appearing that seem to be out takes of previously edited episodes. There was one where Yonghuang is dying and he explains to Ruyi how he was told what happened to his mother in childbirth by Jia, implicating the Empress. I wasn't even aware he died or suffered from mental and emotional issues. Poor Yongji (Hailan's son) had anxiety issues but Ling started feeding him mushrooms when he was very young. He was hallucinating when he thought he saw Ruyi and Ling Yunche embracing in the garden. I never actually saw Ling's brother, who was clearly mentally disabled, being interviewed by Ling Yunche or tortured until this week. I wondered what became of the scabies given as a parting gift by Gao. Finally, I wondered about that weasel like Eunuch, Jinzhong. I had the impression that he had a thing for Ling but I never saw the scenes where he was always touching her or getting in her personal space until this week. He was so slippery and slinky like a serpent. No wonder he hated Ling Yunche so much. The Eunuchs were interesting. I know why that was done to the Castrati but the Eunuchs didn't sing. Why would any man submit to that? What was the point? I pitied Li Yu. He loved Souxin but she wanted children and exactly what did Jinzhong think he was going to do with Ling? It is funny how they all overestimated themselves yet underestimated their victims in many cases. Anyway, I want to thank you for taking the time and effort to reply. I appreciate your answer.
