Hi, author of the map here, many thanks for playing! Always brings a smile to my face to see people enjoy my maps. The bootstrap thing is a pet peeve of mine and I've spent a long time thinking if it would be possible to fix it, and there doesn't seem to be any good way to do so. The reason they only rotate when outputting a laser is because when they are not, they are set to behave like a companion cube- Otherwise they could also be used like a normal redirection cube, which I really didn't like. Again, thank you for playing!

the ceiling looks like that game's -- smash hit it was called I think -- last level. very cool map. also I did not know the difference between "official" and "unofficial" Schrodinger cubes! very entertaining video as always.

0:15 - ngeruma will do literally anything _except_ play Revolution, huh? 1:53 - Well, "official" cubes will never ever make it to Portal 2. They fundamentally can't, due to being a completely new piece of code that no mapper or modder can ever access without a license from Valve. So literally, the only people who can make "official" cubes are people with licensed mods, such as P2:CE or Revolution. Speaking of which, how goes that? 😏 8:12 - This is something that can be fixed even in vanilla Portal 2, dunno why it isn't done for these. Maybe the author of the package forgot, or didn't know? Nice video as per usual! Here's a little insider knowledge/fun fact: by being in the P2:CE team and being the go-to person for puzzle mechanics and puzzle design, I was actually asked by the team if we wanted our version of the Schrödinger cube to allow for bootstraps (basically, what you did at the start to "prove" it's not "official"). I decided against it, because if you think about it, by that same logic, why shouldn't a set of regular laser cubes pointing at each other in a circle also cause a laser to permanently sit there? It just didn't make any sense :P

Really? There’s a way to fix the Schrodinger’s Cubes to preset the same way as a laser cube? I’ve been waiting for the creator to fix this

You're just wrong. Modders CAN access the code as the Community thing is NOT THE BASE GAME, genius! Plus, Valve does NOT need to give a license, stupid. That's not how this works. "Official" cubes CAN be brought to Portal 2. The modder, like ALL modders, simply has to crack open the code. It's not as if the code is locked behind a black box. Plus, Valve is well known to be VERY open about modding their code. Further, NO MOD is official as that is not how modding works. Just because Valve gave the team access to the base code of Portal 2 does not mean they needed a license to do so. Ever played Thinking with Portals? That's a mod that radically changes the gameplay, but it has no license from Valve. It is also a mod that is officially recognized by Valve. In other words, you just don't know what you are talking about. It is rather ironic that you worked on the mod and yet do not understand how modding actually works. It is also fascinating that you don't understand your own mod. You have essentially created portals within cubes. It doesn't make sense for a regular redirection cube because it is a REDIRECTION cube. It is nothing like what you have created. Arguing against bootstrapping by using the standard redirection cube is not a valid argument. Your decision to not make them bootstrappable is what doesn't make sense. It is amazing how stupid some people can be. Your cubes function like portals NOT like redirection cubes so yes they SHOULD be bootstrappable. I feel sorry for you in the future as you are going to be a very dumb old person.

​@@protoborg Valve is incredibly protective of their portal code, so unlike other games like Half Life, they never released an SDK. No SDK means no code access. The only way to get access is by licensing it from Valve, like Community Edition or Revolution. There is also a leak of the first game, but that's kind of illegal, and also you can't publish a mod on Steam if you use it. Source is expansive enough that there's a lot you can do without it. I'm not aware of any mod called "Thinking with Portals", but if you mean Thinking With Time Machine, that was all done without touching Portal 2's code at all. I believe it uses a base game system called "vscript", but even that is very limited. The line between doable and impossible is convoluted, and unless you're a Portal 2 modder-hell, even if you are-you can't easily tell the difference. In a pertinent example, it's totally possible to back-port shrödinger cubes, but keeping them from bootstapping isn't.

@@psychological_atom I don't know who the creator is, but yeah, it's fixable. In BEEmod, custom laser cube models and colorized cubes all have a preferred carry angle :)

the creator of the "knockoff" shrodinger cube is Axolabs, which is the creator of this map.

Ngeruma, that IS the official cube as far as I'm concerned. The original creator of the Community Edition version of the cube is just logical enough to not let you bootstrap the damn thing. The cube is essentially a portal in a redirection cube. The very notion that bootstrapping makes no sense is what makes no sense. Bootstrapping involves connecting a laser to itself. Since the cubes are quantum entangled in such a way that moving one of them allows you to reposition the output laser is easy to do. That means that the cubes are shifting the laser across unlimited distance like a portal would. This means that if you fire a laser through one and into the other, it would be expected for the laser to continue to power itself. Let's put it this way: - Cube A and cube B are connected with a quantum tunnel, like portals. - Like objects and lasers passing through the portals, a laser passing through A and B would logically maintain its various characteristics (speed, orientation, POWER, etc.). - Once the laser has passed through the quantum tunnel, like a cube in a perpetual freefall through portals, it would be functionally powering itself. - Bootstrapping the laser with the quantum cubes would only be logical - The fact that it is not currently possible is merely down to the lack of logical thinking of the cubes' creator (see the comment by HugoBDesigner below). - They are Quantum Cubes. I will never call them Schrodinger cubes as the name makes no sense. Schrodinger was trying to show the ridiculousness of the idea that a thing can be in two mutually exclusive states at the same time. That has NOTHING to do with these cubes whatsoever! The Community Edition team is going to find themselves getting a lot of complaints when players find out they can't bootstrap the laser with the quantum cubes. They will be forced to either change it or lose the player base.
