But you can infer from Triton's comment about not wanting his "youngest daughter snared on some fish-eater's hook!" that the merfolk didn't eat fish themselves. I imagine that in the oceans of a world where merpeople evolved, there also evolved nutritious sponges for them to eat or that they filter feed through some structure on their fish parts.

What about Prince Phillip? He fell in love with Aurora when he thought she was just a peasant girl; in fact, he loved her so much he was willing to stand up to his father, the king, in order to be with her. Then he faces a DRAGON for her, and breaks the spell with true love's kiss. And before anyone can point out the creepiness of kissing unconscious people, the only reason he kissed her was to end the spell and wake her up.

So the "he was a teenager" argument is okay for Simba, but not for Beast, who was: 1) Enchanted at 11 years old for not letting an old hag into the castle on a stormy night 2) Promptly forgotten by all the subjects outside the castle gates 3) Spent his teenage years in a castle surrounded by talking furniture 4) Completely unused to social interaction 5) Terrified and angry at the situation he was in 6) Never pressured Belle into any obligations because of his situation 7) Became compassionate and empathetic as she brought him out of his shell Come oooooon >_
@anthonybowman34237 жыл бұрын
Beast was a dick well after being a teenager. Also, there's no proof he isn't still a violent asshole. Sure he cleans up for like two days near the end of the movie, but that's hardly proves anything. Dude's a violent sociopath. He has a reason for it. His childhood sucked. Still a violent sociopath, though.
@coglineerro7307 жыл бұрын
He's clearly not a sociopath. Also, he never harms anyone who doesn't threaten him. He never hurt Belle. Even when he threw her into the cell, he was sure not to harm her. He attacked her emotionally, but we don't know how others who stumbled on the castle treated him. He cared for his staff to the point where they fought for him even after he ruined their one chance at becoming a human. And he wasn't angry, he was frustrated. He had run out of time and lost all hope. now, his actions weren't ok and he will have to continue to work towards recovering from his trauma, but he was trying. he was actively working to become a better person even when it meant staying a beast forever. if Simba gets a pass, the Beast gets a pass.
@anthonybowman34237 жыл бұрын
He left Belle's sick father in a prison cell with every intention of letting him die there until a reasonably attractive woman SACRIFICED herself to save him. He had every intention of effectively murdering her father. A sociopath is someone who has no empathy or sympathy for others. Even his kinder actions towards Belle is arguably self-interest. He never performs a single act in the entire movie that doesn't serve his own ends.

I love that Beast was essentially in a horrifying life or death situation that included the lives of his friends and possibly family, that Belle knew about, Belle basically treated it like he was her quasi abusive boyfriend with very little sympathy for his situation, and Belle is supposed to be seen as a good person. Belle, you got into a relationship with a guy that he was pretty much forced into with the lives of everyone he loved on the line, and you played the "I don't know, do I love him? game", you're not a paragon, you're an ass. You could have at least tried to fake it to save everyone's lives, THEN try at a real relationship, but no, you took advantage of someone in a life or death situation in which they couldn't say "no"... yea, pretty much rape. One thing that kind of bugs me is that when people bring up that Beast was a 'bad person' or a 'bad ruler' before the curse. If you follow the song, they say they have been cursed for 10 years. And the rose will finish blooming and begin withering on his 21st Birthday. So simple math tells us the the Enchantress knocked on the door of an 11 year old boy in the form of a withered old hag and asked to be allowed in in exchange for a single rose. Now I am not sure about you guys but at 11 I could barely remember to brush my teeth every night let alone rule a kingdom. And STRANGER DANGER, What 11 year old is gonna let in this evil withered looking witch into their house without their parents around? This means the Enchantress cursed an 11 year old boy into the form of a beast, to effectively die in ten years because what 11 year old understands true love. I am fucking 30 and don't have a handle on that stuff.

A few problems with this: Eric was hypnotized. The whole point of the brunette chick was it was Ursula in disguise who hypnotized him to fall in love with her so Ariel would fail. Also, he did recognize Ariel at first. But because she couldn't sing, which is what made him fall in love with her ("that voice, I just can't get it out of my head."). he thought it was just some random girl that looked like her but took her in anyway cuz she clearly needed help. Aladdin didn't want to force Jasmine to love her. He says, "there's this girl" and Genie immediately cuts him off saying "you know I can't make anyone fall in love with you" and he says, "no I know. Besides, it wouldn't even matter. She can only marry me if I was... Wait a minute, can you make me a prince?!" Cuz he knows Jasmine can only marry a prince. And Jasmine *did* love him, she wanted to wait til she found someone she loved, not just some random prince who came waltzing in from nowhere with no wish to get to know her and only wanting her cuz she was a princess. Beast/Adam I feel should get a bit of a pass on his temper tantrums. I'm not saying he should be allowed to blow up like that, but if you were spending your developmental and teenage years as a terrifying, unloved, beast monster wouldn't you be upset? If the movie takes place close to his 21 birthday, since that's the time he was told he had to find love and the rose was already starting to bloom and everyone kept saying they were running out of time, and Lumiere says "10 years we've been rusting/ needing so much more than dusting" then that means the beast was around 10 or 11 when he was turned. So he spent his puberty and his teenage years as a beast, cut off from anyone who could even show him the right path or how to properly lead a kingdom. Not to mention why was he answering the door and not Cogsworth and why would a witch curse a child who is usually taught first thing, "Don't talk to strangers" least of all *let them in your home*. Naveen was only spoiled and obsessed with being rich cuz that was all he knew growing up. I mean you raise a kid where they have no repercussions, no consequences, where they get anything they want and have people who do everything for them, they're not gonna know how to behave in society or how to take care of themselves or literally anything but demand what they want and expect to get it. But then he meets Tiana, sees what a hard working, take no shit, badass woman she is, and he falls in love with that. He knows he has a lot to learn and was even willing to marry Charlotte in the end as long as Tiana got her restaurant cuz he *knows* how hard she's been working for it and how much she wants it. He doesn't need to take over the kingdom cuz his parents can still rule, and he has a young brother who can take over in the future. Of course he opens a restaurant with Tiana, that's what she's been wanting since she was a child. He grows up and changes in the end, you can't judge him based on his character from the beginning. Simba only left the kingdom cuz Scar convinced him he was responsible for his dad's death and that no one would love him or forgive him and he should run away to save himself. He was a baby, can you imagine how mentally scarring that can be to a child who is still in his influential phase?

gaaraxnaru. They called beast an abusive monster (that's fair, cause he is), and basically told Eric to "check his privilege". They brought them up for the soul reason of putting them down. As for Phillip just getting overlooked, do you think the writer didn't do a google search and pull up the list when they were writing the scrip? Phillip got left out because he didn't fit their narrative, the same goes for Eugene (tangled). To think Simba is not black is silly BTW. the lion king is based on a story that is itself based off an old African story, and in all the live action productions he is always played by a black actor. He doesn't say anything to Maleficent, the fairies (even when they're leading him by the nose to victory), his father, nor even Aurora, the woman he supposedly loves after spending, what, an afternoon singing and dancing together? It's like his voice actor quit in protest halfway during production and the filmmakers just decided to make his character a complete mute to hide it. And like I alluded to earlier, he barely did anything to escape from Maleficent's castle, and he certainly didn't kill Maleficent, the fairies did that. The only thing he was able to do on his own was kiss a comatose woman without her consent.

The arguments against Eric were weak. You're assuming a ton of things about the guy instead of going on the actual facts presented. One, he almost drowned, in sea water that burns your eyes, so him not recognizing her face is completely understandable. He had been unconscious half a second ago. Then he finds who he thinks is a strange woman on a beach and proceeds to kindly take her home to his palace. How many royal princes take random peasant women they don't know anything about into their palaces? Probably none. And he wasn't easily manipulated, he was magically cursed to find "Vanessa" attractive. Ursula was really powerful. Not even Triton was able to break out of her cursing him to be that shriveled creature thing. As soon as Eric is freed, he's instantly saying Ariel's name and he's clearly excited she can talk. He also directly says he feels bad not knowing her name and tries to guess it, so he did care about her personally beyond "her body". Usually I like After Hours, even when I disagree with the points, but this new cast is trying too hard. They're just coming across as annoying.

These people want a movie where all of the main characters have already reached a peak for the character development from the start of the movie and don't want any conflict to happen at all. A perfect movie, with perfect characters, and no drama. Sounds like a pretty crappy movie to me! P.S. I love the new cast, just thought the content of the episode was poorly done.

So let me get this straight, Aladdin's a bad guy cause he steals food(only) to live and Simba is good because he's a teen who abandoned his entire kingdom because he needs some me time for 7 or so years? Simba was the acting King and refused all responsibility, how is that a good role model for men, especially real princes? Did I miss something or is it wrong to try everything you can to impress a woman who's face you actually do remember? Aladdin went into what was an urban legend and came out with a genie, a magic carpet and his friend so now after wanting a princess and a home for it he's crazy, it's called a dreams/goals people, I'm pretty sure even the man so poor he can't grow nipples still has those! Also Prince Phillip is who you were looking for who fought a fire breathing dragon/sorceress and won in his first 20 mins of knowing Sleeping Beauty so in conclusion: 1: Prince Phillip 2: Aladdin 3: Anybody else cause the rest are all equal by Disney, just eye candy for girls and one's a lion

He shows interest in her after watching her singing to animals, like doing a thing that would reflect on her personality. He didn't just see her as being beautiful. And then they talk to each other and both show interest. He willing to run away with her and give up his Kingdom. He goes to save her after he was already planning on running away with her. Beast is a sympathetic character. The argument could easily be made that he is the best of the Disney Princes because he had the strongest resolve and character definition. He wasn't a part of Beauty and the Beast JUST because of the promise of pussy. The entire story is a redemption arc where Beast learns to overcome his own insecurities about love-- THROUGH love. That's being courageous, and with a little maturity people can see why this makes him a good role model. He faced his fear, plain and simple. Oh and him being pissed off for half the film was a combination of righteous indignation, panic and frustration involved with being stuck as that ghastly creature for so long. Doesnt make him a bad guy.

Eric was a good prince-- yeah, he didn't like the statue (because it was ostentatious and way over the top), but he didn't outright say "No way man-- this sucks". And Ariel rescued him when he was basically on the cusp of death via drowning-- he was basically barely conscious. So later, when he sees her, all he does is see a fairly attractive stranded girl on the beach and take her in, letting her live with him and feeds her and gets her a whole new wardrobe. Don't think for a second that he had that stuff just sitting around ready-- there were no noblewomen in that castle. And even if he //was// trying to get into her pants, he did it better than any normal guy. He showed her around the entire kingdom, via carriage, boat, etc-- he even let her steer the horses. And yeah, maybe //he// didn't think of writing, but it wasn't like he hid all of the writing utensils-- did Ariel not have the brains to grab a stick and scratch her name in the dirt? There were signs everywhere in that kingdom-- she had to know //he// knew how to read. He found her washed up on shore with no voice in rags; it's not a huge leap for the times that he'd assume she wasn't educated enough to read/write. Eric = best prince

@UltimateKyuubiFox7 жыл бұрын
Omnia Khalid In fairness, Simba abandoned his kingdom to escape persecution. The Beast was in a prison of his own making for (supposedly) being selfish, cruel, and arrogant. Simba had to grow up to be able to handle the situation he was put in, where the Beast's situation (as far as the movie tells us) was one he could've prevented at any time. It's definitely a double-standard, but one that I can see the reasoning behind.
@buciallstar7 жыл бұрын
Simba faced persecution and death if he stayed. I think it's a good reason for a child to run away.
@ssun90747 жыл бұрын
To be fair, the new canon from the live-action movie shows that before the Beast was a Beast he was a selfish prince in his 20s. Depending on what canon you go by the argument could be valid or null.
@kadychapman53507 жыл бұрын
av Going by the original animated movie and the Broadway musical, the live action movies should be taken with a grain of salt. More cannon suggests he was only a boy when it happened. Even in the live action they never specify how long they've been cursed, but it has to be for a shorter period than 10 years since we see beast is clearly not that young in the beginning, but he still ages in beast form due to the rules of the spell "the last petal falls on his 21st birthday". But if we debate cannon with every live action remake that comes out, there will be some VERY messed up cannon.

how many times are you going to copy and paste that without actually thinking about it. its not assaults... it was a single kiss so only one assault. then you need to realize this was the woman he was giving up his kingdom to marry and either knows about the curse and how to break (maybe Snowwhites prince told how he broke his spell? he finds her in a deathlike state and it felt like a goodbye kiss. is it a sexual assault if you kiss a dead relative? she was scared of strangers because her whole life 3 fairies were lieing to her and had her terrified of strangers. then you need to realize he knew her for alot longer then a few seconds. enough time to go and slay a dragon takes atleast 10 minutes for the fight and travel time lol horses really dont go that fast so yeah likekly 3-5 days minimum

Firstly (and more pedantically) all Aladdin said while wish-scheming was _See, there's this girl._ And Genie assumed (as we saw he was prone to do) that Aladdin was thinking about making sure Jasmine loves him. But the bigger more curious issue is that Aladdin didn't ask to be _disguised_ as a prince, but rather made into one. A bona fide prince, like say a _ruler of a principality_ or _heir to a kingdom._ I'd think that Genie's _phenomenal cosmic powers_ should have been able to conjure up a tidy fief somewhere with happy followers and a stable economy. Said powers were sure able to transfer the entitlements of the sultanate of Agrabah when Jafar started his wishing. So I would argue that Aladdin intended only to make himself eligible to marry a sultan's daughter, and Genie shortchanged him, so he had to go in as a pretender, rather than a real royal with real lands. (In the _Thousand Nights and a Night_ version of Aladdin, the genie of the lamp -- not to be confused with the genie of the ring -- was not powerful enough to conjure kingdoms from thin air. He was also permanently on lamp-duty thanks to the King Solomon's binding magic. King Solomon was big on capturing and binding djinn, ifrit and even angels. Also Aladdin was a Chinese thief from a proud family of skilled burglars, and was taking care of his aging -- and thiefy -- mother.)

He's the Prince that doesn't let anything stand between him and his love. Not distance. Not thorns. Not a motherfucking dragon. Not even Death. After all of his Herculean trials, he comes across the corpse of his beloved, he plants a chaste kiss for the love they had on her lips. (I discard any charges of necrophilia, he gave her a peck, not like he was making out with a dead body.) And all of these feats he does after she falls for him as well. Totally consensual hero. This is in a kingdom where it is common for the royalty and common folk to drink themselves into stupors after pissing off a massively powerful Unseelie Fae without regard for how she will respond. He's the man who steps up and does the job. He commands loyalty. What other horse would follow a man's order to charge towards a freaking dragon? Only Samson. Phillip is the prince that Nala wants Simba to be, and he doesn't even need a harem to do it.
@PittsburghSportsFan436 жыл бұрын
Simba didn't abandon his kingdom. He was a child who literally just lost his father, was told by his uncle he would be blamed, then had to outrun hyenas so he wouldn't die. Simba grew up believing he was responsible for Mufasa's death, and that's why he stayed away. When he realized what Scar was doing back home and that HE was the rightful king he went home, defeated Scar and took back the Pride Lands. He didn't even realize he wasn't guilty in his dad's death til AFTER he got back to Pride Rock and Scar nearly killed him. He didn't worry about being punished for that when he chose to go home, he just thought the kingdom needed him and it was time. Shows growth that you don't typically get with a lot of characters in Disney movies.

I don't completely agree. Just because the guys weren't absolutely perfect and have character flaws (like pretty much everyone in the world has), they are not good role models, even when they were very helpful and even saved the lives of the princesses? People have their flaws and certain things they have to deal with and grow upon as a person. And at the end of the day, most of these princes were genuinely okay people either after they have had time to grow or from the very beginning even. In Beast's case, which may have been the "worst" prince, I can kind of understand why he was the way he was at first. Some witch shows up and curses him and his entire staff when he was young just because he would not invite her in or something and tells him he and his staff will be cursed forever if he does not find love somehow as a gigantic monster. I can kind of understand why he is the way he is in the beginning.

This was kinda dumb, they all completely disregarded the princes' character arcs. They all started out with flaws but, through the events of the film, they overcame obstacles and came out better for it. Naveen was less selfish, the Beast was more patient and.. less selfish, Aladdin learned what it meant to care for other people rather than just serving his own interests and coming to terms with greater responsibility. You can't just say Simba is the best because you accept his character development but not Naveen's or Beast's or Aladdin's. Less Significant Argument ahead!! The more one dimensional princes such as Prince Charming and Eric were created that way because the film's main focus was on the heroines. The Prince acts simply as the reward Cinderella gets for 1, being good and hardworking and 2, for disobeying her oppressive family to sneak out. He doesn't get a character arc because he's not the focus, so you can't really judge him. Also, idk if this counts, but in the third Cinderella movie, even though the slipper fits Anastasia, he knows that she's not who he danced with so he (before placed under the spell) dismissed her. He found her with the shoe yes, but I think it was simply to narrow down the search. For Eric, he is given a little bit more but he still remains largely untouched. He is a vehicle to move the plot but he's not the focus, again, it's Ariel. Neither Eric nor Charming have obvious flaws that need to be resolved, so it's really impossible to judge such one-dimensional characters. Also, side note, look at the titles for the movies where the princes have a true character arc vs the ones where they don't. Beauty *and the Beast*, The Princess *and the Frog*, *Aladdin*, and *The Lion King* they have the main characters' names in them. Then look at Cinderella and The Little Mermaid, the princes aren't mentioned at all.

You know, when these were new, I didn't like the new people at the table. The change from one set of friends to a new set made me uncomfortable. But watching them now, I find that I really like these four people and wish that we would have gotten to see more of them!

Y'all are totally leaving out Flynn Rider. I know he isn't a 'prince', but not even a mention, really?
@jacobgarsson24474 жыл бұрын
I'd like to point out that WE know Ariel can write. Why would Eric assume that the mystery girl who doesn't understand forks would be literate when the vast majority of the people at the time weren't? I don't remember her making any particular effort to find a pen or paper in that movie.

This cast doesn't have definable enough personalities like the other. They all blend together in what exactly they are supposed to be (like how Dan is nerdy, Michael is weird, etc)
@kurtlindner7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, they need to more strongly identify each of their characters. Cody is pretty good, he's just himself all the time anyway; there still seems like potential though.

AvantelWings Yeah if they settle into roles it'll get its own groove :)
@derekconnors41287 жыл бұрын
AvantelWings that's really my only complaint so far. Unfortunately it's kind of a big problem they need to address. After Hours' popularity doesn't come from the setting or the topics, it comes from watching the unique personalities and viewpoints work off of each other. This cast needs to work on establishing their personalities for them to become a true substitute for the classic cast.

You guys dismissed Simba from abandoning his kingdom because he was a teenager. May I remind you that so was the Beast. He should get a pass if Simba is.
@RoronoaZoro-ur6hr7 жыл бұрын
bill bill Both the Beast and Simba are assholes. I've seen better anime characters not being portrayed as assholes before... For example Akito from Code Geass Akito the Exiled beats the shit out of Leila's family members in a public building; him/her are talking on a public balcony to make sure both of them are okay; both have interests in reading literature, and both of them are intelligent both in book smarts, but as well as military smart as well...
@go5thhour7 жыл бұрын
These new characters need some rounding. With the others, it is more diverse and settled: Dan is crazy smart, Soren is the straight man (though very rich), Michael is a wild card, and Katie is all about equality, etc. These 4 they all just kind of seem like the same person. The script for this video didnt help though. Even the main crew couldnt have argued these points in a pleasant manner. We get it, cartoons dont fully flesh out their characters and sometimes do things like face blindness for the sake of a plot. This just came off super nitpicky.

Will Harwood I
@derekconnors41287 жыл бұрын
Will Harwood yeah, you hit the nail on the head. I'm open to a new group, but so far this one lacks what makes the classic group so beloved: their personalities and perspectives. For this group to last, they NEED to flesh out these characters.
@laughingjack857 жыл бұрын
Will Harwood The whole basis of their personalities seems to come from the four humors. The old cast did an episode where most TV shows have four characters that have a certain personality. Both casts of After Hours follow this. Similar to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Blue for the characteristics of a leader (cool headed, assertive, charismatic), orange with traits of the fun one (energetic, goofy, wild), purple for intelligence (smart, more introverted, hard working), and red for passion (angry, determined, hot headed). If you look closely they both follow the same pattern. The only difference is the reverse of genders. I have no bloody idea why people are bit*hing so much about it.
@derekconnors41287 жыл бұрын
Alexander Hada there are trace elements of those 4 archetypes in these new characters, but they seem to fade away once the discussion actually starts. Like Carmen's character seems to be introverted similar to Dan, and boat girl (sorry, haven't learned her name yet) is the goofy Swaim type. But as they discuss the topic at hand, these traits fall more to the wayside, and they seem to speak with the same voice. In the original crew, their personalities inform what stance they'll take and what ideas they'll bring to the table. I'm not really seeing that here.

Some of these observations... for Eric, he DID recognise her, despite being semi-conscious when first meeting her. He says as much, but then thinks he's mistaken when he realises she can't sing, which is the stronger memory. Also, clearly mind controlled when the witch shows up, not just easily manipulated. Aladdin was the biggest stretch to fit the narrative. Yes, he just met her, but you even pointed out, they'd started bonding, there's no reason to think he didn't want to get to know her better. He didn't want to mind control her, nor was he being a prince just to deceive people that he was better, he was only doing it because there was a law that said that was his only chance. If the law said she could only marry lizard-people he would have wished to be that. He didn't know she didn't want to marry a prince, but either way, there's the law. You're right, she probably should have remembered him, though, like Eric, she did almost recognise him, but is disappointed when she thought she was mistaken. And gas lighting? How? Gaslighting is to try to convince someone that their reality is wrong. He BECAME an actual prince, that's what the wish was. He wasn't lying to say he was a prince, the genie transformed him into one, he only lied to suggest he was a prince who sometimes disguised himself as a peasant. Again, this was an unnecessary lie since she cared for him when they bonded in the market, but from his point of view, if he wasn't a prince, he didn't have a legal chance. Also, it was rather sudden that he had to think of something to say. The "winner", Simba, gets a pass for letting his kingdom fall into ruin and everyone in it suffer because he should go "live a little", but Aladdin, also a teenager by the way, gets raked over the coals for trying to give himself a legal chance to get to know Jasmine, and in a rather awkward and nervous moment gave a mostly harmless lie.

This was actually nice. I like how they react to each other. The first episode was kind of forced but they seem to take a hang of it now. They act differently from the original cast, which is great since I wouldn't want the new cast to be exact copies. I can imagine my own group of friends being like that. They could be the "Mildly smart about trivia gang".

What's wrong with Prince Philip from Sleeping Beauty?
@Femmeaesthetic3 жыл бұрын
You guys miss the point, Eric fall for Ariel cause she saved him, and he never seen a women (mermaid) do like that before
@jonahwashburn11637 жыл бұрын
who is that Prince from sleeping beauty? sure we don't know much about him, but what we do know is that he had a chill date with his princess, got kidnapped by a whitch who claims to wield the powers of hell, escaped with the help of some faries, and then wastes no time before fighting a flipping Dragon (powers of hell witch) and then freeing his girl from a curse and living happily after? he wasn't first attracted to sleeping beauty because of looks, but because she had a talented voice. so he was interested in her character, so he isn't one dimensional. and plus, he killed a hell witch/Dragon. in case I didn't mention that. the closest to him is Eric, because Eric's people at least seem happy with him and he used a shipwreck to kill an angry sea goddess. these two deserve more respect.

But for sure the adults who wrote the movie and most likely the song realized what his wish entailed. Mufasa meets his demise within a few scenes of that song. Almost as if it was pretty subtle foreshadowing. I give it super props but have seen it go unnoticed for too long

In Prince Erik's defence when she saved him he didn't even know if it was a hallucination or not since he was suffering from a severe lack of air, Ursula's singing is what was making him fall in love with her, I don't think they had invented sign language yet, and when he made her eat fish he didn't know she was a mermaid. He also killed an giant evil sea witch for her. Also if I was given a big statue of myself for my birthday I would feel awkward too and he wasn't ungrateful since they have tons of money so they could have payed for a lot of those statues with ease and the people who made it were just doing what they were payed to do.

The criticism of Prince Eric was stupid, petty and by extension of other conversations from this series insanely hypocritical. They pretty much wanted this decent disney character to have the exact "right" thoughts just because.
