SPOILER, but if you watch the first few episodes, they explain that his first 2/3 wives were all spies, so they all died cause they were traitors. So, he doesn't have much attachment to his wives cause of that. Idk, also, he's not interested in love right now, lol, he's a general so he's busy with military duties?

I saw when he said the second time 'I misunderstood you..." the camera angle changed and his eyes shone/glistens. It can be just light reflection but it suit his character though, which I find nice. Kinda like unshed tears. Considering their stage in relationship and his position (icy general), that "I'll look after your mother for you" is so strong + that camera trick of light. It shows his strong remorse of mistrust while staying true to the character growth pace.
