Formed at the end of Apartheid, Orania is a controversial White Afrikaners only community. According to its leader and grandson of the man behind Apartheid, Henrik Verwoerd, "when we talk about Orania, we think about the true South Africa and we see a huge loss. The demise of law and order. An increase in corruption, theft and violent crimes." Yet there are many who see this as a regressive step and numerous communities are willing to promote multicultural ways of life as the future of South Africa: "Black, white, cape colored, working class, middle class. We do not stop at talking: we put it into practice" says one local. For most, the dream of a united South Africa still has a long way to go.

I'm a purist. I believe we can all work together, even though I would like to stay in a community my own kind. Funny enough that last part is considered racist, but it is far from it. No one ever called a township racist for having only black people there. Why do they have to say that it is racist for white people to stay together? The word "racist" is so out of context in this country, it is actually a joke. I see no problem with people from any color, who want to stay in communities of their own race and language. So Orania is noting else than a white community that want to live with like minded people who share their culture and language. As the black guys in this video talks, they swear they are still forced to live separate from white people. This is so grossly inaccurate. I see more black people moving into the rich suburbs than ever before, so I do not believe that lie any longer. It is more a case that rich live apart from the poor (like any other country). You can not have a squatter camp next to a R3 - 8 MILLION mansion now can you. It will kill the property value of that are to start off with and not to mention the crime rate. I do respect those who want to live in a multicultural society, but they should not force it on people do not want to. Edit : I must be honest though, I was surprised to see the other Verwoerd guy that was able to make a successful multicultural community. Might work on small scale, but not so sure for a bigger scale.

spacial segregation is of course a legacy of apartheid. The gated communities like Orania - next to Townships and ghettos known for poverty, bad education, unemployment - are cementing the old understanding of racial discrepancies. The fact that housemaids and guards of these fenced areas are mostly blacks, symbolizes the different social standings. Your point of seeing more and more black people moving to rich suburbs shouldn't confuse you, you should be glad about it. The rise of the black middle class promises a more educated society leading to a more democratic South Africa, because the ANC unfortunately remains the leading party due to their historical background. In my opinion the allegiance to the ANC by the black majority is bad for pluralism as well as progress, there needs to be coalition-building across racial lines to find solutions, and no more dividing. The racial divides distort South African democracy and they cant get out of it by their own. The "revolution" under Mandelas regency hasnt changed anything - as we can see in this documentary.

There are no black guards, servants, or gardeners in Orania. They don't hire any blacks. It's a community for Whites of all classes. People should be able to do as they please - if they want to buy private property and live around all Whites, all blacks, Indians, whatever. it's their choice.
