@G Thomas, God does not guarantee us a life free of troubles, just gives us a guide for dealing with it! Book of Job is prime example. Plus, the Apostles were tortured and imprisoned, and, if you truly believe, His own Son died to provide salvation for all who seek it! If you don't believe this, fine, but do not belittle those of us who do!! Freedom of religion is still afforded to us in this country! Please respect that! Thanks! 🤦👵🇺🇸

All sheriffs should be like this man. He's so compassionate, honest, dedicated, and humble, and you can absolutely tell that he has a sincere passion for his work, and for all the lives he touches through his work! It is incredibly refreshing to see how he has no shame, or hesitancy, when it comes to accepting responsibility for his own actions, and he isn't caught up in a pointless game of deception, based on putting forth a false image of perfection. I commend him, immensely, and can only hope that others follow his example!

The more I think about this the more I hurt for the families. I lost a child, so understand heartfelt, brought to my knees pain, but I can't imagine what kind of hell these families went through for 20 years. Not knowing where their child is, or if someone took them, or if they had an accident, ran off. And if they ran off to be together cared nothing for their worried parents to at least call to say they were alright. The families lived in a an unimaginable hell for a long, long time. I hope they read this one day so they'll know how deeply we've been touched. May God be with you all.

Exactly this. This sheriff's reaction was the polar opposite of another cold case one I saw solved where the mom was pissed after the fact because the sheriff at that location didn't do their jobs well and she literally knew the entire time where he was. She had asked the sheriff to investigate at this spot and they never found him. It didn't even take the cold case investigators an hour to find his truck in the river and the sheriff was just being a retard about it since he knew he had fucked up.

I'm glad the families are finally relieved from the anguish of not knowing. Here in my country it took 19 years to find a missing girl, her body was discovered in the church's attic by some men who were working there. The murderer was a boy who was always seen as a probable suspect, but evidently there were few evidence. In the meanwhile he moved abroad and killed another woman there. He's in prison for both crimes now.

Very sad. Everyone should look up the videos that show you how to get out of a sinking car NOW! "Seatbelts, windows, out - children first. That means, get your seatbelts off, then get the windows open, then kids out - oldest first” He said even if the car's windows were electric, they would work for at least 10 to 60 seconds. Or smash them. Once the windows are open, help children or others who may need assistance, out of the vehicle. "Especially with children, push them out of the window ahead of you, then follow them," Dr Giesbrecht said. If there are multiple children, his advice is to go from oldest to youngest. While this may defy a parent's instinct to help the younger children first, Dr Giesbrecht said older children could then be instructed to climb out and hold on as the adult gets younger children out. I think they both must have been unconscious most likely. My guess at least. The car was almost intact. You could open the windows or doors after the car was filled with water. I guess the impact knocked them both out and they will not have realized much of dying at all. Would be interesting if the airbag was open or not. Or if this model even had airbags. As it seems they didn’t suffer at least I hope so.

@Brandon McHenry thanks for your insights Sir. Yeah I can imagine this is always so easy to say but if not trained beforehand you panic and this kind of situation is so quickly over and that’s it then. For opening the doors you would have to wait until the car is full with water. Which also is very tense moment and you’d panic easily. Always easy said that to be done. I agree there with you. Just was thinking they somehow could have made it out of the car as it also was not really deep even there.

I doubt anyone will see this but there is a story about my great grandpa where an individual went missing near where he lived on a lake. So, he went to the closest location on the lake where she was last spotted (a bridge for an over crossing on the lake) and jumped off. He let his body go limp and let the current take him wherever it led, which was straight to the location of the missing person’s body tangled up in a bunch of sticks and moss. Best part of this was he did it all on a buzz. Legendary papaw.

It is just silly to put heavy blame on this Sheriff. He came into office after the disappearance. New evidence surfaced that changed the outlook on where to look in the county. He already had aroused suspicions that the wrong areas were searched. Now what he did right was embrace free help to search those areas at no expense to his agency. He was grateful for the help and even pointed that free help to the very areas he had grown suspicious of. People forget that these departments run on a budget and must justify every expense. Not a great defense but still a fact. Kudos to this man for being open and accepting of help when offered. So many other people in charge consider the offer of help as an insult instead of what it really is. They are also ungrateful for the assistance they recieved when the case gets closed as well.

@@katiedotson704 I mean 'closure' as to finally finding out what happened to them and discovering their bodies - that's all, nothing more than that. It is obvious what happened as it was a car accident and of course, nobody will know why it happened, but more than likely an error of judgement at the time, or an animal crossing the road etc - who knows. The fact that a lost loved one's body is discovered after many years is actually very helpful to most people who have lost them - we are all different and see things in our own ways. At first he met refusal, but by and by he got accepted and involved. He then got the proper, official safety training, protective clothing, helmet of a real firefighter and his electonic devices that alarm him. When a house is on fire he cares for the people who see their belongings and family memories go up in flames (not unlikely when farms catch fire and not even the cattle can be dragged out or their stables), and when there is an accident it is him who walks side by side with the police when it comes to ring at people's doors. They once had to wriggle the shotgun out of a farmer's hand who was going to blast his head off when he heard that he would never see his son again (motorcycle acident).

I like the sheriffs attitude when asked if he and those before him had dropped the ball in investigating the disappearance. He said we're all humans, and we make mistakes but the important thing is to learn from them. I respect the man a great deal for saying that. I think he will put what he learned in this case to good use in the future. I'm glad these 2 teenagers are finally home. It was long past time. ❤

I remember this story. I remember seeing their pictures for years (missing) I was barley 19 (just over a year older than the two). If anyone in either family sees this comment, please know that I know this brings closure, but also rips open that wound. Silently, for years simply hoping she was alive somewhere living a good life even without you, but now having confirmation that they passed….it rips open that wound that never completely healed. My prayer is that God places His hand upon all of you and heals your brokenness. I can’t imagine how everyone must feel that they passed this spot over 20 years… I, myself, would feel a eerie feeling, but also mixed with guilt and sadness. I drove past a man that was off the highway and out of sight for a few days while I lived in Texas and he died slowly of his injuries and I felt like if God would have given me a flat tire or something, I could have saved his life. Feelings of guilt and that eerie feeling are what I felt. I am glad they found these two, but I know the feelings are bitter sweet. I pray both families are at peace now… rejoice in the fact that Jesus was there that night NO MATTER WHAT our sweet Savior was there. Sending my love to all of you touched by this. God bless you all.

This almost happened to me when I was pregnant with my first son. Was house hunting and my GPS ended up taking me into a single lane state forest route instead of the typical hwy route. Wasn't familiar with the area so I just thought, wow yeah this place is really rural don't know if we wanna live all the way out here but kept going to look for somewhere to turn around. Never found anywhere to turn around and ended up in a bunch of snow right next to a raging river still didn't see anywhere good to turn around so kept going through the snow thinking at least it's a Subaru. Came up to a down tree blocking the road up ahead so I breaked then the car skidded towards the river. Thank God there must have been a gaurdrail or something there I couldn't see under the snow or just God's Angeles because the car stopped right at the edge of the river.

I’m always amazed at the number of people that simply drown in the cars. Don’t know the circumstances here or all the facts. But I recall a case in Texas when a mother and her two small children drove off a road into a lake during the winter and icy conditions. The road didn’t have guardrails until after the tragedy. Every time I drive this road I think of them. I can’t imagine what the mother felt and those babies. It angers me and makes me sad. The pain the husband and father of those children went through and maybe is still going through today. I wonder what happened to him, and if he was ever able to let go.

I am so glad these 2 kids were finally found and able to be buried by their loved ones. I will not blame the detectives of the original case because they had a lot of information coming in, a lot of leads, and ultimately a lot of stress and pressure to find these young kids. Guaranteed the original case workers beat themselves up so many times over the years trying to put the pieces together. Cold cases are being solved because fresh minds come in that haven't had the stress and pressure to close the case in the newness of it. It truly is a team effort in some cases. I am just so happy to see the teamwork being fully embraced. Solved is the goal. Clearly, the original case workers collected extensive data and did a great job with records so down the road when fresh eyes were on it, they could also track leads and develop theories. Lots of hard work over many years and it paid off. I could see the Detective's flood of emotions after getting absolute confirmation he was holding the proof in his hand. Praise God to everyone who helped over the years. May these two souls rest fully in peace now.

It's good to know you are 'so glad' hearing about this. In reality it's sad you're not concerned about the competence of the detectives 20 years ago. That's the problem with some detectives, they assume it's foul play and they run around like Crockett and Tubbs seeking out the mischievous activities that went down to cause two people to go missing. Ultimately they put this case on the back burner because they couldn't find out which one of their local mob bosses made these kids 'disappear' without putting much thought into the possibility cars don't float and maybe they're actually at the bottom of the creek along the route they were driving.

@@jayryan7473 or they did know which one of the locals did it and so they set on an area away from it without anyone at the party questioned obviously or they would of known they wasn't there. And the one piece of information showing a location at a certain time from a actual witness way overlooked? The person the took the statement didn't ever read it? Maybe there is more info I didn't see. But so far putting two and two together, this doesn't look good. Maybe allot of cases out there where evidence is not being looked at for a reason. Why not make all cold case evidence public after a period of time less than 20 years and this one would of been solved at that time. Lots of others are possibly the similar. Even if I'm wrong and this wasn't covered up for years, it would of been solved by uploading the evidence. Either by the person uploading it or by someone reviewing it online. And if it was intentionally overlooked and it didn't get uploaded, the person that wrote it would see it missing and tell it. Either way, it and others would be solved that are just sitting around. A year or two max and the info should be public. I understand for a short period of time some evidence can't be general knowledge. Stuff only one person may know. But if they haven't found that person in a year or two, it's time to make it public a maybe keep a killer from continuing to be so free to do so, or getting people found and cases solved for closure. There is steps that could be made standard that would prevent cover ups, accidental overlooking of things and helping to remove some of the temptation of covering something up by making it harder. If there is steps then they are not enough obviously. My idea here off the top of my mind would definitely help, I'm sure there is better ideas to add as steps additionally too.

There are several deep drop-offs in my town directly adjacent to roadways, and they're completely covered up in kudzu, so there's no telling how far down some of them go. One day a few years back a bicyclist was riding by one of those drop-offs and just happened to look down and catch a glint of sunlight reflecting off a tail light, just barely visible in the overgrowth at the bottom. Someone had driven their car over the embankment--and it had been sitting there long enough to be grown over with kudzu. When the authorities went to haul it out, they found that the car held two badly decomposed bodies. They turned out to be the bodies of a couple of college kids who had randomly disappeared in the mid-90's. You'd be surprized how easy it is to lose a car in that kind of vegetation. That car could have sat there for a hundred years and nobody would have known it was there if some random guy hadn't been passing by at just the right time of day to catch that little red glint.

I have a cousin who's brother in law went off the road somewhere in DeKalb County which is adjacent to White County here, and it took winter to hit for them to be able to see the car. I don't remember if it was the same year or a couple of years later. My cousin and an uncle drove that road looking for him and drove right past because the kudzu covered the area so heavily. There's an abandoned building in another part of the county that used to be the Center Hill Restaurant, overlooking Center Hill Lake. Kudzu is swallowing it up now. The weird thing is I'm also related to Jeremy Bechtel so I know of 2 people who just disappeared in that general area of middle Tennessee and the terrain kept them hid. I think a lot of people thought they were killed in a bad drug deal. I find it better to know they died in an auto accident. I wish Jeremy's mom had lived to get closure.

Are you seriously saying that the Mother would rather that her child have died, rather than her (the Mother) not knowing her daughter's whereabouts or fate?! That is absolutely self-serving idiocy. There is a wide spectrum of fates between 'known' and 'unknown', and many would be preferable to 'death.'

My brother committed suicide by jumping off a cliff. The tide took his body out to sea before he was discovered. So we spent over two weeks travelling all over the country trying to find him, until his body finally washed up to shore. Those two weeks were a nightmare; everybody barely slept, barely ate, couldn't stop stressing, couldn't stop travelling. Obviously discovering him was traumatic. But, I can't imagine, if he never came back to shore, what the rest of our lives would have been like. To spend 10 years without closure, I just can't imagine. It really is like limbo.

The messed up part is. She looked like a very good teen gal. But the Sheriff made out like she just went partying. For 20 years you know the family was super hard on her in their hearts because the Sheriff made it seem as if their daughter might have been doing something wrong. She'll never be able to defend herself against that. Even with the families closure, there is a possibility there was still a little spark of "What on earth were you doing" inside the families mind about her. The Sheriff essentially wrote her off from the beginning and never made any of it right.

The video that Jeremy did of it is really worth a watch, it was put up on his channel (Exploring with Nug) on 4th Dec 2021, and it's called "SOLVED 21 Year Old Missing Persons Case (Erin Foster & Jeremy Bechtel)" if you want to search for it (in case you need the assurance, you will never see a body in any of these videos, only the car). The moment he finds the car and dives down on it is really humbling. It's sitting there at peace 10 ft down, and the call to the Sheriff is on there as well, so great to see a police department that was just grateful for the help and to solve a case.

Seen a bunch of videos like this and what really stands out is the Sheriff in this one. His compassion and his level of personal involvement are very high. If more sheriff's were like him the world would be a better place, in other videos they treated the finds almost more like a nuisance and a waste of resources where as in this one he seemed genuinely so happy and thankful for the discovery! This man needs some credit for doing a great job!

Eleven years after a man had gone missing, leaving a note behind that he would end his life, the police in my hometown sent the divers down into the harbour to search for a gun that a suspect said to have flung in after a shooting. What they found was the car, the embossed numberplate still readable, covered in seashells and starfish, and a skeleton behind the wheel.
