Matahachi is actually a very realistic character. He's not insane like Musashi,who would willingly fight against a hundred men if that's what it took to achieve his goal. He would rather take the much easier path,like most of us would. It's just more convient. (Can't get everything to fit in a comment,so I won't bother.)

His character development is also more realistic. Instead of going through extreme conditions or almost starving he simply gets overwhelmed by the consequences of his own actions and finally admits not only to his mother but to himself that he can't be who he wanted to be and that he made mistakes along the way. And only then by accepting his own faults starts his journey to becoming a better person. I'd say both him and Musashi learned how to "truly see" through different means and it shows that none of them may have chosen the right path to follow since if there is more than one way to achieve this "enlightenment" then their stories could have been way different and perhaps more wholesome. He is our every-day-guy and despite his faults was able to achieve something an outstanding Musashi could while not walking through a field of corpses.

What really hurts about Mata isn't his behavior, but how he keeps baiting you into thinking he's about to take steps in the right direction to strengthen himself, only to bail at the last moment. The story pours opportunity after opportunity in his lap for him to do the right thing and improve his own character, but he keeps taking the easy way out, even though the lessons he needs to learn are far more straightforward and simple than Kojiro's. A lot of people are as lazy as him in real life, but I like to think most of us would at least try to change things around if we got the same ridiculous amount of chances as he got.

Those people hating on Matahachi don't understand his main flaw. It's not that he can't murder people with a fancy sword; it's that he's afraid to be himself. He hides behind false names because he thinks that as them, he's better than he can ever be. THAT'S NOT TRUE, folks. Anyone out there, reading this, who doesn't like who they are - trust me, you have value and worth. You are loved. You don't need to achieve anyone else's dreams - only your own. And one day, like Matahachi, you will find your true talent, and you will be wise, humble, and happy.

The thing I love about matahachi is he basically holds a mirror up to us the reader and presents many of us with the way a lot of us would frankly be forced to deal with the scenarios that a Musashi or a Kojiro would deal with. We aren’t them. We’re so painfully not them that they seem like these two forces of nature moreso than they do men at times. Kojiro being loved by swords, and Musashi’s awakening are not feats achievable by any mere individuals. Matahachi though we all kinda know someone like him in our own way extremely flawed with his most redeeming quality really being how obviously fallible he is when juxtaposed to someone like Musashi who’s character arc is essentially centered around the awakening of his more whole and centered self, where musashi turns inward and accepts these qualities for what they are, Matahachi does what most do and shifts blame simply to not have to take responsibility for the fact that homie fucked his own life up and lies to his own mother rather than admit to being a weasel.
@GustavoSilva-ny8jc
@GustavoSilva-ny8jc 2 жыл бұрын
@@thebeastmodeism Yeah, you nailed the part on how he mirrors most of us (not so much about the rest but wait a bit), like how many times did we tell ourselves, "this time it's going to be different!". "I'm going to change", "i'm not gonna make the same mistake again" just to proceed to repeat them again, and again and again. If Musashi has a talent in his life is his ability to change super fast, almost inhumanly fast, but he lives an extreme lifestyle so is ADAPT OR DIE, he feels this truth in bones, so is only natural for him to develop that quick given how high the stakes are. The effort, danger, consequences and the eventual discipline that they forces you to develop lacked in Matahachi's life, even before going to Kyoto. He chose a lifestyle based on unconsciousness even while hating it because it was easy and confortable; which most of us can (painfully) relate. But i think he got it all wrong, is not this zero-sum game, being a swordsman doesn't mean no sex and no drinking, and sex and drinking doesn't mean "just drown on it". It's all about moderation. And his fear of fighiting and death can be controlled thru training, but he didn't learned cause he didn't tried to.
@GustavoSilva-ny8jc
@GustavoSilva-ny8jc 2 жыл бұрын
@@thebeastmodeism Now is the part i explain what you didn't get. **Prepare! This gonna be long** One of the things that the story most do it's dismystify the idea of invencibility, uniquiness, talent and genius, showing that those people are just regular people - fallible and ignorant like everyone of us - that trained really hard and sacrified their ENTIRE LIVES to be great at something ("many say their sword is their world, but those who live by the sword are rare"), and that anyone who think they're special in some way, that they're techniques can't be appropriated, evolved and they can't be beaten it's profoundly misguided and it's creating the environment for his own defeat. That's why Musashi is so stubbornly humble toward the second half of the series, he knows that ego is the most corrosive trap of all. But maybe you're not convinced so let's get more specific, Kojiro was obssessed with swords since his conception by the sea (an origin definitely worthy of a mythological hero or god) but growing up he had terrible technique, raw fighting sense and was psychologically imature just like any kid. In his first true fight he was freezed to death and got traumatized, but later he went in search for improvement and a way to overcome his trauma, he did this by asking for help. And got his ass kicked by his father again, and again, and again, and again in the process. But his determination was so strong that HE CONTINUED SHOWING UP, when most people would have given up, cause all he could think about was "great! I learned something new!"; as a result he came back a bit better everytime. It was a long and arduous process for him, so when he reached a point where he felt completely ready to fight, against those random guys in the beach, he smiled and thought "i can fight! I don't feel fear anymore". And Musashi, while experimenting quick success in an early career, he was trained by the Mighty Shinmen Munisai and those guys he killed were just random dudes caring a sword, they didn't had the same attention and sensibility to performance that he had, and while though his adult strength is really something else, it was a thing developed throughout the years through a tough lifestyle, SO HE EARNED. He was also really lucky, if he had faced Seijuro or Inshun - people who were way more polished at the same age - or someone more matured, Ittosai or Yagyuu, he would have been screwed. Strenght is highly contextual.

I think the whole vagabond fandom agrees that as a person Matahachi,s mother was an awful person but as a m9ther she was truly great. Just something I thought about her abd the fact she adopted him kinda tells a lot about her.

The more you hate a character, the more you are like him. Only your pride keeps you from seeing the resemblances. I get that when read Wuthering Heights and hated a specific character. Then i remembered how i hated Matahashi for beeing jealous of Musashi strenghts, determination and, above all, of having a goal and pursuing with passion. Matahachi see his destiny and didn't like it - marry and be a lord of a small village - so his only choice is to pursue other's destiny, and doing so, he is aways taking other's face, names, appearences and reputation. Is a beautiful and truthfull character.

Anybody can have Integrity and Accountability. There are many characters who do what he does positively. Tenki was weak but he helped those less fortunate and was loyal to his friend. Otsu was just as alone but she’s kind so people actually like her. Seijuro was just as hedonistic but doesn’t use people to satisfy his lifestyle. Baiken stole someone’s identity but also took on the responsibility of raising their daughter.

@@nathannix3217 of course. I was doing a generalization. And i am not alone in this vision. Goethe, the german poet, also said that "we are more severe with the mistakes we already did". So, if you hate an character, is good to see if you have in some way the thing you hate...

While reading Vagabond for the first time around 1 week ago I disliked Matahachi but it was also eye opening that I am quite similar to him in the fact that I set unrealistic expectations upon myself and then never go around to doing it. Hopefully I can change this about myself gradually 🙏

i really actually blame more his mother than Matahachi itself, she never listen and always think was in the right way at the end, not letting Matahachi think or do anything by his own when he was younger and in the very end we just saw that yikes man that we dislike. But its also true that he could even change alone, he was actually an adult but instead of doing the things right just always tried to take advantage of everything he can

Characters like Matahachi are made so we can empathize with them. We see their whole story, the behind the scenes that we don’t get to in real life. The fact that people still judge, shows how fucked up the world really is

Matahachi is not a bad fighter at all. He's killed men with his own skill. His problem is, whenever he can find an easy way out he'll take it, and then wonder why he can't catch up to Takezo.

Matahachi is an incredible character, many stories have a close friend turn against the main character after being unable to surpass them, Matahachi however is a man who knows he is not extraordinary, he is not takezo, although he tries to be, he is pathetic, but he knows it and that makes him quite appealing

During the story, I kept getting disappointed with Matahachi and his foolish antics. I kept thinking 'Sort your bloody life out'. Eventually, I kind of lost hope for him. Though, he did manage to turn himself around after a long time. Then, I was proud of him. He made so many ridiculous mistakes, but did sort himself out.

i kinda like matahachi for similar reasons others do , hes realistic and not a hero . he knows hes not a hero , i hoped throughout the story he would change bro didn't obviously . I thought that he would change and become someone of mention more than a timeskip character . the humanity of matahachi was what really made he an interesting character . I can't round my thoughts so ima leave it at that.
