Don't forget that James Barton, the MC and solo dancer in this video, created the leading role of Hickey, in the original 1946, production of Eugene O'Neill's The Iceman Cometh. He was O'Neill's choice. Also played the father in Paint Your Wagon 1951. You can see his wonderful performance in James Cagney's film of The Time Of Your Life.

His name is James Barton [1890-1962] and he has his own Wikipedia page too. It's listed among others with the same name but with (vaudeville) next to it.

These are phenomenal dancers, plain to see where Fred Astaire and Gene Kelley and others got their moves. This predates rock n roll by thirty years, but really exciting to watch almost like Michael Jackson and smooth criminal. Amazing.

Shorty was the one who gave the Lindy Hop its name in a newsreel at the Harvest Ball in 1929. The Shorty George (fingers pointing to the ground) was named in honor of him. Interesting how they "cakewalk" off at the end of their stint.

@djaluh Thank you so much. I have been trying to find this out for ages! Unfortunately though I can’t find the same version as the one they are playing in the vid anywhere! Shame really, it’s the best version in my opinion! :) If you find out pls let me know? Thank you.

Does anyone know without a doubt who the first two leads are? I was told the 1st lead is Leroy Jones and the 2nd lead is George Ganaway, but after doing some research (reading Frankie Manning's documentary, looking up old pictures, and reading internet threads) I think maybe the 2nd lead is Freddy Lewis? I just want to get my facts strait when I credit someone for where I learned some moves.

Didn't even realize the MC is James Barton in blackface.

George Snowden is popularly credited with bringing the Breakaway to the mainstream after participating in a 1920s New York City dance competition. Is "Shorty" George Snowden ... the one who invented the "Shorty" George move?

Winner: Couple #3 Second Place: Couple # 1 Third Place: Couple#2 No business in film: White guy in blackface
@HeirOfNothingInParticular2 ай бұрын
The blackface is regrettable but that white guy is the one and only James Barton.
