The game devs actually wanted to make a really good game, there's some leaked beta build floating around that shows a game that's actually decent. But the people in charge were all "no we don't like this, we have zero game development experience, you should do what we think" and then they kinda just had to make a bad game as dictated by the execs.

It was the Warner Brother's licensing team. The whole team got changed like days after the deal was made, and the new team were apparently morons. They wanted Titus to make it a Sim City-style game initially, and the dev company had to basically wait months for every decision to be approved before they could implement it. The original concept of a Tomb Raider-esque title sounds super promising, too.

The distortion at the top of the CRT is due to electrolytic capacitors getting leaky with age and going bad. Used to have to fix it in ancient arcade machines all the time.

I've also had similar issues with an old CRT I had that just had a lot of dust in it, a proper cleaning fixed the issue.

So a little history behind this game: “Titus” the developers was a freshly new team with some programming history inside the team, and they bought the license from Time Warner to make a Superman Game. But as development started, so did the troubles. Warner constantly hindered the team with “Superman can’t do this, or Superman won’t do that.” Pestering the team with changes and revisions that made no sense. By the time this released Titus knew it was a bad game, but had to release something to make some kind of money back. There was supposed to be a PS1 port of the game but sadly it wasn’t ever released due to the license expiring. Though iirc the PS1 versions ROM leaked on line some time ago, and the game was actually OKAY… not.. good or anything special. But better than this.

I think this game was originally mean to be an ambitious, open world experience. Some of that open world DNA is actually in there, but I remember a story about how the publishers kept wanting them to change it, they didn't want violence, so they changed it to the Virtual World concept, but so many issues happening in studio just really messed with the development and they were forced to release for the holidays, so they just took what semi-functional build they had, did the bare minimum to make some sort of game with it, and have it pressed and released. It's a shame because the N64 really could have used an ambitious, Open world game with it's already shallow library.

When I was a kid I was so into Superman, I dressed up as him for Halloween every year, I had about a thousand action figures, I used to go to Walmart in a Superman costume, all that stuff.
