Massive, massive hit in its day. Gaskin continued to be cited as an influence by many of the artists who followed him throughout the next few decades. This is one of the cleanest pressings I've ever heard of this track. Minimal surface noise!
@BrucesPhonograph7 жыл бұрын
This recording was not pressed, that is reserved for disk recordings, this is taken from a brown wax cylinder which was either copied from a master recording by use of interconnected hollow tubes or was dubbed using a pantographic device. In 1893 the tube arrangement would have been used for making copies, pantograph copies came out sometime around 1895. Copies dubbed from masters (of which a limited number could be made from each one requiring recording "by the round" to produce enough masters to supply the market), increased in quality and volume through the 1890's until commercially molded cylinders came out in 1902.

Wonderful, and incredibly bizarre, being able to hear a representative of a Society that no longer exists... a true voice from the distant past... how different things were back then. And it bends the mind even further if you comprehend that Queen Victoria was on the throne at the time and WWI was 20 years away, and yet it would be 30 years before commercial cine flicks moved from mute, to 'Talkies'. Talk about hearing the dead speak, its a one-way seance! As for this, we now have all the technology needed to make this 'come to life', as though it were recorded nowadays. The speed could be rectified, the subtle variations ironed out, the wow-and-flutter corrected and the surface noise removed with compression, filters and attenuators, The voice and instruments could be fully enhanced by layer-cake dubbing so as to both raise and broaden the frequency response through graphic manipulation that'd add to the flat 'black & white' tone of the original recording, and stereo could be introduced. Yes, it could be done and would take a lot of time and effort but then, perhaps it would lose a substantial part of its charm and identity in the process, - but I'd still like to hear both versions all the same if it were possible. Thank you for the upload. Mark. Second Side Up Radio.

The little accent singers and performers had back then is so cute and haunting. I don’t know if it’s similar to the Transatlantic accent (I think that came later), but you can sometimes hear it in some of the those old PSA’s and films from the 1920s, 30s, and 40s - mainly from the older actors who would’ve been teenagers in the 1890s. They roll their r’s and exaggerate the vowels and it’s so strange to hear today.

This is essentially Nu Metal of the 19th century. Lyrically depressive, poetic, with a lot of white noise to aid the discordance of such an edgy subject matter of one's inner turmoil.

I fully understand that, with the very concept of recording audio being a very new thing - making *any* sound quality classify as AmaZinG - I still can’t help but compare this quality to that of a music box that one’s Great Aunt had gifted to them as soon as they were born, and they’ve kept it all these years, but now it’s all worn out, and doesn’t sound the way it used to when they were 5…

Joseph A Siemer adapted the song in 1894 to After the Strike. Seeing scab coal being transported through his town during the 1894 Coal Mine Strike, he rewrote it about a scab coal miner who became a scab and regretted it years later. It was the anthem for revolution, sparking Ohio’s Sunday Creek Insurgency.
