Funny thing is if you do everything right up to the cut, the plane does land it's self. At that point the pilot's biggest job is to judge if the wire is missed and he needs to do a missed landing. There is very little you can do at that late a point to improve a landing on a carrier deck and if you try you likely will cause big problems. The worst thing you can do is to ignore a LSO's wave off and try to save a bad approach.

Fun Fact: Modern Carrier landings require the jet to run full throttle once it catches (keep in mind it is slow when landing and no where near full speed on the approach) this is for safety reasons. On the very off chance of a system malfunction or the cord snapping, this ensures that the pilot can get off the deck safely and attempt another landing.
