As SilverQuill pointed out, despite be relatively new to the Crystal Empire, he gets promoted pretty quickly. I can't help but suspect that Princess Cadence saw the way Twilight looked at him and her inner romantic decided she should "encourage" the chance of them becoming an item. Since Twilight doesn't visit the Empire often and Cadence is always eager to escape the monotony of the empire, she makes Flash a part of her escort. If nothing naturally happens, Cadence will probably orchestrate a situation for them to break the ice.

I like flash sentry because there's open character potential. I can actually see her being attracted to him because maybe he reminds her a bit of other male role models in her life. He is a guard like her older brother. And so what if she's attracted to his good looks? Like we all haven't noticed somebody hot before? But the looks aren't necessarily what makes you stick with liking them or mean you're going to get into a relationship with them. I see her relationship with him currently as a crush. Whether something comes of it will probably be left to the fans as hasbro probably won't make it cannon.

I've always loved him, not just for his design and voice, but he's just so adorable! It boggles me how he's hated for having little to no character, yet a character like Soarin has just as much development and is beloved. I just wish the writers would give him development, and maybe, just maybe, he'll gain more of a positive response from the fandom

I like Flash Sentry. And I feel if he had more support from the fans, we could have had more opportunities for development, both in the character, and in the relationship. It's a shame that MLP FIM wasted so many chances to use and develop the male characters of the series, and I feel that Flash Sentry had a better chance than most.

I think the problem with Flash is that, really they're just afraid to do anything with him. Hasbro for the original movie most likely gave them a checklist of things they wanted in this new world, one of them being a love interest for the main character who fit the generic definition of whatever their focus studies showed young girls like in boys. I can imagine the people making the movie being as cautious about him as we were, instead just kinda playing it safe. You're definitely right in that his only scenes and purpose are to serve Twilight, but since we've gotten to know Twilight and pals over the course of multiple seasons, they really should have given him more of a focus in the mere hour-ish we have in the first film, to really expand his personality and make him less of a tool that's merely there to serve the plot. I really wanted Rainbow Rocks to fix this, but we see even less of him and learn absolutely nothing new about his character. TL;DR recast Brad as Nic Cage plz.

I wish the fandom would keep in mind that my little pony, although awesome, is meant for little girls. As a person who would like to have a family some day I look at the character Flash as a cute, funny, willing to do crazy things to help others out, type of person. I would much rather have my daughter crushing on him then lets saaaaaaay someone from twilight. I think if the writers dived in and fleshed out his character he would be much more likeable for the fandom. But as it is, I'm scared that they won't because the fandom has decided that he is the devil's spawn. I personally really like his character I just hope to see him given some depth because I'm sure he has some. (I mean come on, HOW did Sunset Shimmer get him to date her when she was queen B?) But all that aside, I feel like the older individuals that like this show take personal offense to his character, but I just wish they would keep in mind that it is a show for little girls. (and I do not mean that as its a kids show it can be stupid, because I hate it when kid's shows are dumbed down and low quality just because they are for kids, I hated when I was little, I dislike it now. MLP is high quality and I feel like every character they create/touch has more than meets the eye) If the writers gave him depth and noticable flaws, I would be happy, but I personally am happy now. (There's my 2 cents for ya ;p)

People hate Flash because he's a forced love interest to create teen-drama but Timber is the same situation and people like him? Personally, I like Flash Sentry but hate the fact that he was treated kind of like a "teaser" character. I mean, yeah he was in the EG movie and had some significance in the plot, but ever since then he's been basically shoved in a corner but I blame the writers for using fanfiction ideas. Others people may dislike Flash for different reasons who are complete pointless like the hate of the new Ghostbuster and Metroid Federation Force but I say bring on more Flash, just give him something to do next time and I hope that the new EG movie could do that.

Watched this seven years ago and I’m *backkkkk* I really liked his character on the standpoint of future potential - a nice, decent guy who’s willing to help those he doesn’t fully know well, has past history with a former bad guy that is mostly unknown even now, is into rock and music while his pony counterpart is a royal guard? My struggle with Flash is that there is seemingly no potential for growth if they are together. No struggle to be together, no discovering new things because of a new relationship. I like Flash Sentry, sure he isn't given much screen time and there for moments to flash out his personality, but I guess that only opens up the door for more possibilities for his character. In my opinion, the character "Brad" as you would call him, had more hints and insight on how his personality is like than the pony Flash Sentry. Have you seen Rainbow Rocks yet? It shows a little bit more of his personality in the beginning. Personally, I don't see him as the rebel bad boy type when I first saw him, his facial expressions are way too sweet for that, I see him with these traits: Kind, polite, generous, noble, honest, clumsy, socially awkward, and possibly even determined. I know it isn't much to go on but, it's there. And I like his attraction to Twilight, it's adorable how he likes a girl who appears as socially awkward as he is. I don't know about you but couples like that make a statement in my opinion.

Welp....This is going to get me killed. First off, Hello, SilverQuill. How are you? Well, I hope. Second, I apologize for the (possible) shit storm your comment section may turn into. Third, I hope you realize that the whole "Twilight acting goofy around Flash" thing isn't Flash's fault. Jut wanted to say that. And now, for what will mostly likely be my death knell. Ohh...I’m NOT going to be making many friends with this one..In fact, I think someone of the friends I have, I might lose. Buuuut, whatever. (Disclaimer; everything I talk about will retain to Pony Flash, not human Flash. I do like him…but…well…that’s another beast all in itself) I found it rather funny how despite having only two(or three depending on whether or not EQG is in canon or not) appearances and having less lines then two other background ponies(Time Turner and Bon Bon) Flash still gets so much shit from the fans. Despite him being in the same boat as the others. Yet, everyone seems to love the background ponies and create all these amazing headcanons and stories that are accepted by the fanbase with no probably.but, if someone makes anything related to Flash that is kind of positive, there are going to be a fair amount of negative comments. Hell, at least Flash has shown some type of character with his comment towards Twilight at the end of EQG…as appose to the other background ponies(who has shown very little or no type of character) But, because his counterpart was made to be a love interest, pony Flash has to get someone the hate too? Yeah…that makes sense. No. It doesn’t Also, let’s talk about human Flash for a bit(who I will refer to has Brad) Thing is…poor guy was screwed from the start. If he had a more promote role in the movie, he would have been hated for taking up more screen time than other characters. It’s that reason that I feel bad for him and his pony self(who’s basically getting backlash) Something else that bothers me about whole thing(and this can retain to all fandoms) is that…Flash/Brad has done NOTHING to be this hated. Hating character who done nothing to deserve such hate is pretty damn sad. Then…there’s the thing with Twilight. … Let.It.Go. It’s not a big deal. Twilight has some (possible) interest in a guy(who she admittedly, not yet spoken to…on screen)? WE MUST LOSE OUR SHIT! No one seems to bat an eye when any of the other main six is paired with other character(whether it be fore or background) but, as soon as someone says they like Twilight/Flash? Bring on the hate! TLDR; Anything you guys say about Pony Flash can be thrown back at the rest of the background ponies. But…I really don’t see any reason in making this. Everyone else seen in a Equestria Girls who also appear as ponies are seen as two different characters, while Both Flashes are seen as one and the same due to having the same personality. I believe that if we seperate Flash from Brad by giving Flash more character, people may start to appreciate him more. Well the pony one anyways.

Great review! I have a question, did anyone else find it weird that when Pony Twilight gained a human body, she suddenly started being attracted to a human? She had no other automatic human-traits, she didn't know how to walk, hold things, eat, and had a hard time understanding their behaviour, she was pretty much still a pony, but yet instantly fell in love with a human and found him attractive. Isn't that kind of like one of the humans being sucked into Pony world and falling in love with a pony? Seems kinda weird to me.

I like the way legend of everfree portrayed Flash. He seemed a bit more... Real... More unsure, yet trying to help. And I love how awkward he gets around Human Twi. Imagine going to school with someone who looks exactly like your crush, with the same name? Plus, even though he knows Sunset never actually liked him, he cared enough when they were dating to be able to pick up on when she's upset. You should review that one already.

Legend of Everfree was the worst film to me *because* of how everyone treated Flash. He gets pushed aside for some new guy nobody knows but praises for some reason, even though he lives up to none of his boasting like Rainbow can. Then when he feels depressed over Twilight the most Sunset can offer him is “get over her.” She goes into long friendship inspiring speeches for everyone else but the most she can spare for him is “get over her.” The only thing that movie did right was giving the girls their magic powers. Everything else sucked and they screwed Flash for an asshole.

Even the writer of the movie took notice of this but as a joke she gave us a false name at the same time so it wasn't till the movie came out that we found out it's Flash Sentry.

You really don't get the joke? He's a parody on every ship-fic ever. He's basically an OC designed to attract Twilight and has practically no purpose beyond that. Flash Sentry lives in the Crystal Empire, so Twilight can't see much of him in the show proper, and Brad is in the Human World, where twilight only visits for a few days at a time and not often. This is the closest to a one night stand that you will ever see in a children's show. Not only that, but he's a blue-haired royal guard. Who else does that describe? Shining Armor. Flash can also mean Shining, and Sentry is a guard or solder... that wears Armor. Flash Sentry= Shining Armor. Boom, metaphor for incest fan-fics between twilight and her brother. Also, Twilight Sparkle= Sunset Shimmer. Sunset also dated Flash at some point, so more play on shipping. Also, sentry= a soldier stationed to keep guard or to control access to a place. Maybe Flash is new to the royal guard because he'd been guarding the mirror to "control access" to it? I mean, someone had to guard the portal between the two worlds from the Sirens. They didn't want them to come back! after all, 1,000 years ago was when ALL the shit came down. The fighting between races and the THREE windigos? Sirens. Luna gaining jealousy over her sister? Left over power from the Sirens. Discord coming into power? Probably helped by the sirens. Terek and his bro having apposing feelings about ponies? Sirens. ALL of the stuff that went to shit a thousand years ago was stopped or put off after the sirens were banished.

You know, I can actually see a potentially great character arc here. It's based off of a LOT of assumptions, but hear me out first. What if Flash's father was a Royal Guard who served as an inspiration to him, but then died in the line of duty? This would spur Flash to try to carry on his father's legacy, and struggle to be the kind of guard and stallion that would make his father proud. And as for how he rose through the ranks so quickly, not that Cadence said he was a new CASTLE guard, which could simply mean that he was new to his current position. He's clearly not a crystal pony, so he was probably transferred from Celestia and Luna's domain. And if he was one of their guards, maybe he managed to pull off some impressive feat off screen during the Changeling invasion, like saving a group of civilians on his own. That would explain why he was given such an important position in the Crystal Guard. Again, this is all speculation and assumption, but it would help flesh out his character. I just hope the staff does something with him, because the worst thing for him would be to remain as he is.

I have a couple of small nitpicks: 1) Developing a crush on someone because you find them attractive isn't so much shallow, as it is biology. And the fact that he's a decent guy, on top of being attractive in her eyes, is bound to be a major plus. 2) Flash, at least in EG, actually has interacted with people other than Twilight. Now, having gotten those out of the way, I will say that, you're right about him having gotten the spotlight in an unusual way for MLP, so it is entirely possible they might date, and you'll get your wish about seeing him interact more. (Personally, I hope if they do, it only becomes a minor subplot, I'd hate to see MLP/EG become romance-centric.)

I think not. besides, who really wants the love drama to come into friendship? So I say since they already introduced him, give him a role and stick with him. say twilie is assigned a guard who can keep up with her, and on occasion, be faster then her. since twilight can fly, itll have to be a pegasus, and since we don't want some unknow, unlabeled guard, lets go with another princesses escort/ announcer. I have two different hopes for Flash's character and storyline: #1) That he gets some development beyond being "just for Twilight" concerning his background, interests and goals, and that he and Twilight have a beautifully developed romance and have their "happily ever after." #2) Pretty much the same as the first, only, instead Twilight and Flash end up being each other's "the one that got away", where they must end their relationship due to reasons (that are shown and not told). I think I'd be good with either one of those happening, since the first one would be sweet, but the second would carry an amount of realism in that Twilight had to sift through some colts before finding one she could settle down with. But of course, time will tell if anything really significant ever happens with Flash. I mostly wish we get some onscreen development for him just because he's a potential love interest for Twilight, which seems to demand such a thing.

My big 2 issues with Flash were that A) his purpose in Equestria Girls was funcitonally pointless, with the whole bit about the photos proving Twilight's innocence being something that would've been far more effective if it were the Humane 6 doing it, and B) the sudden case of Twilight being attracted to this guy...from a species she's never met, in a world she's unfamiliar with, that she's never even actually spoken to properly... Yeah, the romance angle was painfully forced and his one big scene in EqG would've been better served by another character. He also seems to have little to no personality, hence my nickname for him - Captain Cardboard

I like Flash the pony, I'm indifferent to Brad who is ironically the most "fleshed out" version of Flash. We barely know much about the pony as you said yourself. It's a bit sad how the show seems to just have had Pony Flash just fade away, instead of having him appear a few more times so we could see more the difference between him and his human counterpart.

I've never hated a character so much that I think the show would be better if without him/her, I've seen videos about this but I enjoy the show and try not to think so much about it😊❤❤

What I mean by that is, do you think that if a character in one world died, would they die in the other world too? Now, I doubt that Hasbro would support the idea of death in the show (so if ponies don't die how is their population kept at a stable point?) but if Chad committed suicide, would Flash commit suicide too or just die for mysterious reasons? I'm curious, but I don't think there will ever be a cannonical (I spelled that wrong) answer to my question.

That part where you talked about background ponies made no sense. So characters who have literally frames of screen time have more conflict then a character who a partial focus of a whole movie? I don't think so. If the fandom can make up unique personalities and countless fanworks about characters based on one action they preformed in the show, they can do the same for someone who has the amount of screen time Flash has. Heck, they've done it before. For the longest time Big Mac had nothing to him other then saying "Euyup" and Sombra is barely in his episode. And yet there are countless fanworks for both characters. I think he doesn't get a lot of stuff made for him not because Bronies can't do it, but because they don't want to. And on that note, I think its the same way with the actual writers of the show. They don't flesh him out not because they are unable to (they proved multiple times they have what it takes) but because they probably don't want to.

***** True, but it is because of that. She was a blank slate, you could fit ANYTHING into there, it would not be wrong. Flash, or at least the Human version, Brad, is different. From the show, he fits one more Archetype that wasn't mentioned. He is the very deffinition of a 'Mary Sue' or in his case, a 'Gary Sue'. He is Perfect, in every possible way. He has no faults, no conflcts, everything goes right for him. Because of this, any fanfics, art, or anything that doesn't show him as a perfect person in everything he does is WRONG. The Background Ponies, were blank, you can fit anything in and it would make sense. Flash Sentry tho? He was there to be perfect, and to be a love interest for Twilight. That's it. That's all he ever will be. He isn't living a life in the background we don't know about. His very existance is for Twilight to have a love interest. And that's why people hate him. He has no history, no character, no personality. He's... Just perfect. Nothing wrong.

You both have some valid points. Here's the thing. Flash really doesn't have that many flaws. Silver Quill is right on that one. He doesn't have any conflicts. While that does lend him to a Mary Sue, it doesn't make him one. He's not a mary sue/gary stu. The idea of Flash lacking conflict would be a problem if were more of a character, but he's not. He's barely in the movies at all, and in the show he is essentially a background pony. People don't have to like him for what he represents. I can understand why people don't like him. But hate? He hasn't done enough to warrant hate. He's barely a character at all, and that's what people don't like, right? If he were in the show more and still be the same, then I could see disliking him that much. But for now? Not really. And yeah, shippers aren't known for thinking about these issues rationally.

You misunderstood him. What he is saying is that with many of the fandom characters the crumbs of screentime gave possibility for conflict. With Flash all of his showings only seem to prove that he doesn't have conflict. Big Mac was part of a very flashed out family so there were questions about how he interacted with that and what exactly his role is on the farm. With Flash there just isn't that same level of intrigue. Twilight just has a service level crush and he is a medium ranked soldier who's job seems pretty secure. I have seen people expand on Flash but usually when they do they make his character up almost from scratch. Big Mac is often a more complex version of how he is in the show while Flash is often a completely different character. With how he is with him being secure and stable people don't really know where to go.

I hate how that's a thing. All the spell did was make everyone but the mane 7, the Principles and Scratch more aggressive with one another to feed through them being negative since they can only eat magic/energy from those that have negative emotion. Flash is acting as he would if he was mad at Twilight anyway. He's just pushed. The principles are the only ones controlled directly by the dazzlings. Though if you have time Silver I will ask that you consider discussing what "fluttershy's song" confirms for her character, generic hippie lyrics they may be.

I kinda like Flash to be honest. Though he seems to be more along the lines of the side character who comes in handier than they should to me, at least as far as the Equestria Girls movie goes. I do believe the implication for the lines being shared is that Twilight can, well, pretty much have the cake and eat it too with a boy she just met who was really nice to her in another world... oh look there's one of him in this world too just like how it's mentioned offhand that there was a Twilight in that world she went to.
