I view Nightmare Moon as being more like a serious mental breakdown, rather than some kind of phase that Luna choose to adopt. So, to me, the EoH didn't change her but acted as the magical equivalent of (for lack of a better phrase) mental medicine, like anti-depressants.

I mean, the Nightmare Rarity arc in the comics had Nightmare Moon be at least partly due to outside influence, so it could be that the Elements of Harmony just kicked the influence out. It could be like Sunset Shimmer, where the magical change into Nightmare Moon scared her straight after she was saved

There was actually a story where Discord explained how his magic worked. I don't remember which one it was (I have like over 300 stories in favorites on Fimfiction, so yeah), but the explenation the author gave is quite plausible. Chaos magic is just that - chaotic and unpredictable. Discord just uses his powers and sees how it takes effect, most of the time getting the results he wanted, but for the most part just rolling with what comes out. That would be also a reason why Discord wouldn't be helpful in anything that involved powerful but precise magic. Truly, your videos never cease to amaze and entertain. Can't wait for the Twilight's Kingdom review here!

That bugged the heck outta me too. I had to create a head-canon that said pony "reforming" spells were temporary measures that blocked the subject's aggressive or evil tendencies, only to be used in extreme circumstances. And that she wouldn't have used it unless Discord started causing some serious damage, and it would wear off after they got him in, like, an anti-magic cage or something.

Jackie McCann Honestly, I'm a little conflicted here. Sure, the mere thought of such a spell is as dark as they come (I HATE all forms of mind control), but, I gotta see it from Twi's perspective, too. What Discord did, well, I know a lot of people (and ponies) who wouldn't have just turned him into a statue. He not only messed with their personalities, their friendship, which is probably one of the most precious things in their lives, but he wouldn't have stopped at Ponyville. As soon as the Elements were out of the way for good, he would've turned his eyes on the rest of Equestria, if not the entire world. Hundreds of thousands, if not MILLIONS of innocent Ponies, Griffins, Buffalos and whatever the heck else lives in that world, would've had to suffer under his brand of Chaos... Yeah, I can't really blame her for slipping so much....

I came across an interesting idea as to why Discord's powers seem weaker. In a fanfic it was stated that Discord actually uses chaos to make himself stronger, not just creating it. If we go by that idea, it means that Discord creates chaos, allows it build and then feeds on that chaos like energy. It make him grow stronger and thus he makes greater chaos and feeds off that again, making him stronger still. An ever expanding cycle of growth.

I think what you missed about Discord's power is this: He isn't like Q, he IS Q. He's almost the exact same character. He is very powerful, to the point that he can bend reality to his will. But that doesn't mean he's unbeatable. The Enterprise crew always managed to beat Q's challenges or solve the problems he created in their own way. So to have Q port over to Equestria wouldn't put a limit on his ability. It would just give him a new set of challenges. Discord knew he could exploit the ignorance of the Mane 6 to try and throw them off their game and get his way, but also winds up showing his own and losing because of it. In Star Trek, Q does the same thing. The first time he meets the Enterprise crew, he exploits their ignorance but suffers from his own form, and loses his challenge with Picard. Discord isn't supposed to be super powerful, becuase like Q, he's a well rounded character who knows how to have fun. But the trade off is that he's not good at being serious. He just does what he knows he can do best.

What this episode really does excellently is presenting the moral problem of being self-centered, and providing a sensible counter argument in a way that kids can understand. That´s something I find this fandom often forgets in its neverending analysis. The episodes are usually approached only as stories, and not as lessons for kids, which is really kind of what they do best. One could easily imagine that this epsiode would teach a young girl how to deal properly with a misbehaving younger brother for instance.

This was absolutely hilarious to watch. Once again Silverquill is at his best when it comes to all of the references and jokes he throws in. That reforming device reminds me so much of that device Flim and Flam showed off in 'A Case for the Bass' that I think it may have been intentional. Also love the Clint Eastwood reference at the start and the cameos from his previous guests. As for KP, she was a pleasure to watch as she acts like a really good foil to Silver. Even if you reform Discord in the episode, that doesn't excuse the chaos he causes in this episode, the vine invasion in Princess Twilight Sparkle and teaming up with Tirek in Twilight's Kingdom. Also, when Discord said the "Friendship Is Magic" line, I knew he was faking being reformed. I'm sorry, I want to like this episode. I really do. Why don't they get a piece of land for Discord, one he can turn into a chaos-riddled theme park of hilarity. He could get total freedom to be as random as possible, and those that visited him could take part in the fun and then leave when they have had enough. Also... when you're going from place to place... do you just keep the gas pedal floored? do you always ride a bike at full speed? I look at Discord using his powers like that, he uses them as he needs/wants to. does he always have to magic everything at full power? wouldn't that run him dry pretty fast?

Except it's not just Discord. Celestia herself stated that even with her own and Luna's powers combined they were no match for Discord, only being able to defeat him by discovering the Elements of Harmony. This is further backed up when Discord steels those elements out of a magical vault that Celestia had thought impenetrable -- and yet somehow we are supposed to believe that in KC&FO she can suddenly cast a spell that stops him from steeling them a second time? Furthermore, there is just how effortlessly Discord goes about the process of corrupting the M6, most notably Fluttershy. With each of the others he played head games first, but when Fluttershy lack of self-esteem proves too humble, he just gets fed up and whammies her anyway with only a single touch. Proving that he never had to play such head games in the first place and could have hexed all the others just as easily and called it a day. Point being the fandom presumed Discords powers to be nigh-omnipotent because that's what everything about the way return of harmony was staged led us to believe. As such his powers come across feeling very watered down with no real explanation outside of contrived plot convenience.

It's not really a DBZ thing, which attempted to actually quantify each character power with a numeric value, but rather just a comparative scale based on information the show itself gives us. Celestia > Luna, but Nightmare Moon > Celestia, but EOH > Nightmare Moon Likewise, Discord > Celestia+Luna, but EOH > Discord Admittedly Twilight's Kingdom is kind of trouble spot, but that episode already lost most of its credulity the moment Celestia's supposed best plan is to "hide" all of the alicorn magic in Twilight on grounds that Tirek doesn't know about her, despite the fact that Discord is at this point allied with Tirek and could rat her out (which is basically exactly what happened).

You are right DBZ power levels where proven highly inaccurate and random a few chapters after being established. My Equestrian world order kinda shattered when Chryssi overpowered Celly. Since then I just accepted the rule of plot convenience. Characters will always be as strong and have access to just the spells that the plot demands. (like Twi suddenly being unable to teleport in Feeling Pinkie Keen)

My personal headcanon for how powerful discord is goes like so: Discord is a very powerful magic user, but most of his strength comes from the power of suggestion. He's a manipulator, not an all-powerful demigod. When he took away the mane six's magic/wings it was more of a suggestion that they no longer had them, than an actual theft of them. In that respect, I believe most of Discord's magic is a type of illusion, not an actual altering of the physical world. Again, he SUGGESTS that he's done something much larger than he actually has.

We don't really know how exactly, or how precise, her prophetic dreams work. It's also possible Celestia planned to have Discord reformed because she had the prison cells checked after Cerberus' escape, don't want to panic anyone else, & secretly hoped to have him reformed as a magic-anomaly tracker to recapture Tirek.

There was a fic where Fluttershy being a giant manipulator was shown to be the worst idea she's ever had since she's also the only one that would often interact with Discord. In short Discord basically becomes AM and stops Fluttershy from ever bring able to die and turns her into a puppet that does and says whatever he wants. 'Twas a lovely read

Celestia's task for her pupil Twilight reminds me of Dumbledore's Quest for Harry to get the memory from Slughorn in "The Half-Blood Prince". Celestia knows, that Twilight and her friends got the possibility (Fluttershy's friendship to Discord) to reform him, like Harry got the possibilty to remind Slughorn of his mother's braveness to get the memory. Reforming Spells on the one side, and Veritaserum on the other are no options cause Discord/Slughorn would be prepared and Celestia/Dumbledore could do it much easier if the option would be there.

I feel like (given the stuff we've seen) Discord's magic works in a surprisingly specific way: 'Make something not this'. The 'this' being his choice; so the kitchen ware was 'make it not inanimate' thusly giving way for possible sentience. and with things being materialized; that's a 'make something not fake' set up. He might not have full power over his... well power! It gives (what i think is) a good explanation as to why he can seem all powerful yet not at all at the same time ^~^

Am I the only one who has absolutely no quandaries with the Mane 6s reformation spell due to the belief that Discord was a truly 100% evil tyrant in The return of harmony and feel that every time he is called a trickster or chaotically neutral it puts a dent in the incredibly powerful undertones and themes that gave The return of harmony such an epic feel - I.E "Luna and I saw how miserable life was for each pony so we rose up and defeated him." or how he discorded characters like Pinkie and RD just to mess with Celestia's attack plan - He was evil, plain and simple - When life is misery for the general population, it kind of makes sense for the heroic characters to say "To hell with free will - Possible eternal chaos and misery might make pony Jesus understand!" - And even then if you still think it's going too far, isn't it cool to see characters act strictly on their own morals and actions rather then the plot forcing them to do the "heroic" thing whatever that may be - Isn't Fluttershy already doing that?...actually no, she's using manipulation tied in with genuine affection - That's proper 3-dimentional character, no one is the good or the bad - Everyone is just ugly. Great review both of you.

CrittersRule247 Well, I guess most people just see it as too forceful or sudden to be acceptable, the "reforming spell" will also seem to take away Discord's free will (although as stated in the video we don't really know how it works exactly) in total, even imprisoned, he still retained it, only prevented from exercising it. This may stem from American culture that values freedom & free will above all else (in my limited understanding). Actually real-life already has some examples of "brainwashing", they're just a lot more gradual & subtle to be called out. Yet even then the reciever still retain free will whether they want to choose to accept the suggestions the giver applied or not.

On the case of Discord's powers, I have a theory that the extent of his powers is as chaotic as his powers themselves. My theory is that how powerful he is is entirely random, but still always above a certain point. He probably doesn't even know how strong he'll be in the morning, but the fullest extent of his powers are still there, just not all accessible. And with the brain washing on the subject of Equestria Girls with Sunset Shimmer, I always thought that Twilight and the not Main 6 were removing powers that were forced upon her by the demon-ness (I still don't get that, would somebody tell me how that works again?). She was crying after the demon powers were taking her over, so maybe in those brief seconds she reformed herself. It's kind of like when you do something really bad that you know is bad but you don't really care until that thing is over, then you realize how wrong you were and set yourself straight. that's why I prefer to think that Nightmare Moon was forced upon Luna instead of going berserk, and not just because Luna is my second favorite character. While I don't necessarily like Equestria Girls, I will defend when I see something good.
