Anyone else feel a strangely profound sense of gratitude for being a teen/young adult in the 80? God knows I do (I'm 54), and the nostalgia is so painful at times... Little did we know how crappy it would all turn, and perhaps how little we appreciated what we had.

@@saulramirez6117 Hi Saul. I wish I could take you back... The feeling of unbridled freedom was so much greater, and it felt more live and let live. Life now is a chaotic mess, filled with so much hate and anger, surveillance, tons of sour people, and so many who are cruel simply because they enjoy it, and nothing is done. Sure, violent crime stats were a LOT HIGHER then, and nuclear destruction at a moment's notice hung over all of us, but we as a nation were more cohesive, more relaxed, not so faux fancy, tougher, and more on a common path to help each other. It feels like another, lousy world today in the US, and I can't tell one year since around 2008 from any other since.

@@debralol8447 I'm glad Debra, nice to read of others who are on the same (sane) page. If not for my 26 y/o child, I really don't feel much need to continue on as it is. Not depressed - Simply so weary of being who I am, in this mess of a nation that I do not fit in at all anymore. I feel so sorry that we have to exist in such a crappy country, and not from the lack of us trying to make it better.

The original version was recorded in German by the Austrian singer Falco, who had a #1 hit in the US in 1986 with "Rock Me Amadeus." His version of "Der Kommissar" was a dance-floor favorite in Europe, but unlikely to crack the American charts, so Falco encouraged English-speaking bands to record this song so he could make inroads in the States. After The Fire was a British foursome whose most notable member was former Yes synth-man Peter Banks. They released three fairly successful albums in England before their label, CBS Records, issued the Der Kommissar album in America. The title track became the group's only hit - their follow up was a song called "Dancing in the Shadows," which topped out at #85 in the US.

You could get a steak dinner, or fill your gas-tank, see a movie in the theater first run and prime-time and also buy a large popcorn and pop and still have money left over. Nowadays the only steak dinner you can get at a restaurant for 20 dollars is chopped steak. In other words essentially hamburger steak.

Every time I hear the song start, it takes me back to those great years of awesome music and events that we lack at today's artists!
@alexanderroberts38552 жыл бұрын
This was on my dad's 80s mix tape that we listened to in the car growing up, definitely one of the best songs on there. Years later I heard the original by Falco and now this version doesn't do it for me anymore. Just listen to them back to back, Falco's kicks so much more ass!

Yeah, just because one is better, it doesn't mean the other is worthless. We do that in this current culture all the time; "Anything that isn't first place is losing!" Ridiculous! Also, it's a logical fallacy.
@alexanderroberts38552 жыл бұрын
@@robertmcpherson1617 I'd argue that most cover songs are worthless, even the good ones usually don't live up to the original.

@@katty01 I love both versions, each one stands out on its own. Falco's has a more analog early-80s minimal sound while ATF has a fuller acoustic sound. I personally prefer the latter but Falco's is also unique :D

Guys, just calm down already. Don't think of it as an insult, rather consider it as a tribute to Falco's song. The beat is nearly identical and the lyrical translation is almost 100% accurate. America loved the song and wanted to make a version everybody could understand. That's how much of an influence in pop music Falco had back then!!
