Yep, 100% This recording is up there with other landmark sessions. It represents so much scope and context, in the incredible American tree that is jazz. The journey of jazz crystallised. It reminds me of Marsalis, Mingus, Morton, in its intention and belief in jazz as a serious musical discipline.

I would have tried to nonchalantly exit the room if I was going to play a solo after Patrick Bartley . I was scared for Bruce Harris , but he pulled an awesome solo out of his genius mind .It took guts to follow Mr. Bartley. Amazing Stuff it doesn’t get any better then this

@@fresamouse Brilliant work! I've done a couple of "transcriptions" of Emmet Cohen's ballad cadenza's: Not perfect, but listened repeatedly to his ideas, figured them out at the piano best as I could, jotted down first in pencil, entered by hand onto an old notation software called Encore - a very old school way - but satisfying to be able to feel EC's gorgeous ideas in my own hands & good training for my (non perfect pitch) ears! What software did you use?

Can someone explain the harmony of the intro?
@fresamouse
@fresamouse 8 ай бұрын
sure thing. so Emmet is essentially starting midway through the B section of the melody. In the song, the chord progression repeats twice, except for the change of that second time variation it lingers on the ii minor chord (Cm - G7 - Cm) tonicsizing it with the dominant, instead of a 2 5 1 into the tonic as it does the first time. He's basically starting on the lyric "someday when you feel lonely." as playing through almost the entire second half of the changes as the intro ( Cm / G7 / Cm / Ebm7 Ab7 / Bb / Am7(b5) D7 / Gm / Gdim7 / Dm7 / G7 / Cm7 / F7 / Bb / / / E+7 )

Why is the trumpet transcription writing in c? You have to transpose the trumpet up 1 step. Same with sax, it's written in c but it's supposed to be Eb. Yeah you can play the parts on piano, but not on the correct instruments.
@fresamouse
@fresamouse Жыл бұрын
glad you asked. it's a concert pitch transcription for objectivity's sake. when there are three solos in one video, you can examine the difference in approach to soloing in the three players(what chord tones/ extensions they rely on, space, etc.). But there are also Eb, and Bb transcriptions in the link in the description. :)

What's this type of jazz called?
@fresamouse
@fresamouse 5 ай бұрын
The short answer is "bebop," which tends to involve a lot of complex flowing melodic lines, rhythmic call and response, small band improvisation, and often a simple understandable 32 bar harmonic structure. Here Patrick Bartley is taking inspiration from musicians like Cannonball Adderly, Miles Davis etc.
