Some people are calling this an accident, but that completely misses the point. This was a man-made disaster. They consciously left Ammonium nitrate there for years, knowing how dangerous it is. My thoughts are with the people of Beirut!

Ammonium nitrate only becomes flammable/reactable when it comes in contact with water/moisture, the whole reason it all exploded is because it was out in the weather on a port therefore it became dangerous

Most of the buildings have been rebuilt but the port itself has not the port is operating again as the dock and some warehouses have been rebuilt in the port but the silos have still not been rebuilt and much of the port as well

dubai has a lot more money so they could probably build back a lot faster, and possibly even improved on some spaces, whereas in Beirut they dont even have the resources to conduct a clean up and search and rescue operation, let alone to start rebuilding what was probably extremely expensive port infrastructure that the city relied on economically.

Thank you glad you are healing. Such devastation. Im a Firefighter and when I saw this and knew that Firefighters were battling this fire. Unfortunately they were obliterated as well as any workers. Why so much ammonium nitrate was kept there and for so long any other Cities or Countries that have this amount in storeage needs to be in bunkers and not in major populations. After the ship and cargo were basically abandoned, the Port Authority knew precisely how dangerous it was and instead of doing what was right, they chose to have the cargo unloaded and stored at the docks, supposedly to auction it off. For the unqualified "biggest explosions in the world" ranking the top 1000 entries will all be nuclear thanks to the ludicrous amount of tests that were performed between 1945 and 1992. But in the end, the exact numbers hardly matter. It's a terrible tragedy that was completely preventable.

A fire at the Beirut port caused the detonation of 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate, which had been improperly stored in a port warehouse for six years. The ammonium nitrate, commonly used to make fertiliser and explosives, arrived in Beirut in 2013 on a Moldova-flagged ship making its way from Georgia to Mozambique. The Rhosus merchant vessel, owned by a Russian businessman, was forced to dock in Beirut after facing technical problems at sea, according to (PDF) lawyers representing the boat’s crew. The ship was subsequently impounded by the Lebanese authorities for failing to pay port fees. In 2014, the ship’s cargo was eventually unloaded and stored in a warehouse in the port. In the years that followed a number of safety warnings were sent to multiple high-level officials but nothing was done. Experts have estimated the size of the blast as being the equivalent of 200 to 300 tons of high explosives. R.I.P. to all those who lost their lives because of negligence.

Those silos were built in 1975 (in the lebanese civil war),it was a gift of help from the UAE, they built it to resist earthquakes and it was built from reinforced cement that can stand a lot of blast damage. Love from lebanon🇱🇧

Most were full or almost full. The ones facing the blast were ripped open as you can see. They effectively shielded the other side by sheer mass. However the entire structure is damaged beyond any repair.

I just had my dads funeral ⚰️ today he was 84 and died in his sleep after a long fight after a stroke 30 years ago it was so bloody hard but he went piece fully. I can’t begin to imagine what it’s like to go through something like this. Like the kids that lost parents verse visa and to know it was avoidable. Heads should roll over this. 🇦🇺

So there was ~2,750 tons of Ammonium nitrate sitting next to a bunch of fireworks (since 2013) in the shipping warehouse in Beirut, Lebanon that was set on fire by a welding torch meant to patch a hole. The Fireworks (gunpowder) went off, which rapidly increased the temperature of the fire (400+ degrees F 204+ C), causing the Ammonium nitrate to Oxidize and explode. May those killed RIP, hopefully better safeguards are enacted to prevent such incidents from reoccuring. The explosion in Beirut was equivalent to about 600 tons of TNT comparatively, a nuclear explosion in Hiroshima, Japan was equal to 13,000 tons of TNT (little boy). 30+ accidental/terroristic/civil explosions have been recorded from the use of Ammonium nitrate.
