The explosion in a warehouse in Beirut ripped through a city known for both a heyday of glamour and a history of civil war.
Lebanese people are calling it their 9/11.
Starting with the epicentre, here we follow how the blast sent shock waves through Beirut, bringing life to a halt.
The Lebanese are famed for their resilience, rebuilding after 15 years of civil war, invasion and foreign occupation.
But this disaster comes on top of an unprecedented economic crisis - and the Covid-19 pandemic. Will the country ever be the same again?

Not only is Beirut facing it's worst economic crisis ever. They also have a government that completely neglected them for years and resigned. Now these people have little to no help rebuilding an entire city.... IN THE MIDDLE OF A GLOBAL PANDEMIC NON THE LESS. The sheer willpower and determination of these people are something that I will never be able to fathom.

Im from Lebanon and I know that there still is powerful corrupt politicians that did not resign and they are also responsible for the big explosion that happened in Beirut’s port. For example our president is corrupt the whole efin government is corrupt for many many years and till this exact second while I’m writing this comment money is being stolen from the people and no one is held accountable. The resignation of our PM Hassan Diab and the whole government with him was just a distraction for the public view now people think everyone resigned but the politicians that stole allot of money are still in power till this day. Talk about justice not being served whatsoever specially the victims that died the day of the explosion and their friends and family waiting for some kind of justice.

@Raniere We afford cars because most of us cannot afford to live in Beirut, so we drive cars from outside where it takes one 1-3 hours (depending on distance) to go and come back from work. where do we go back to? 20 and 30 year Old living in their parents house cz we can't rent our own. that's why we have cars (which most of the times belong to the whole family). if you calculate it as such, you'd see why making ends meet requires lots of sacrifices

Cul Doode Look up the Halifax disaster. Dec 6th, 1917. (In Canada) A ship (Mont Bloc) was carrying thousands of tons of TNT, Benzine, and other explosives went off after a collision with another ship, the Imo. Thousands died (right in the Halifax Harbor) and the blast was about 2.5 times bigger then this one. Someone one far away caught the blast on a old camera. It looked like a volcano erupted. A 1000 pound chunk of the Mont Bloc’s anchor flew 2.25 miles one way, a 90 millimeter cannon flew over 3 miles the opposite direction. It was the worst man made disaster in North America fatality wise till 9/11. It was the largest man made explosion in human history till the bomb was dropped on Japan. The 2nd largest Man made explosion during WW1 was deliberately set under enemy trenches. Men fought under ground too. Setting charges, and even fighting pistol, fist, to shovel under ground.

2,750 tons of Ammonium Nitrate is equivalent to 1,155 tons of TNT. As Nalle said the GBU-43 "MOAB" (Massive Ordinance Air Blast) dropped in Afghanistan in 2017 (by USA) was equivalent to "only" 11 tons of TNT. For reference the Hiroshima atomic bomb "Little Boy" dropped at the end of WW2 was equivalent to approximately 15,000 tons of TNT. Basically Hiroshima bomb = 15 Kilo tons TNT vs. Beirut explosion = 1.2 Kilo tons TNT.

They still got railroads department and don't have a single train for the last 50years. All the help sent to Lebanese people trough their government is redirected else. Honestly to me this is a story of how harmful religion is to mankind. Irrational, false, arbitrary, unquestioned emotionally charged beliefs inevitably lead to poor decisions. I'm not sure about the ground shock-wave, but I read that the air shock-wave was traveling approximately 6 times the speed of sound (mach 6). This is basically 2,000 meters per second or about 4,500 mph. No wonder people had no time to get away or take cover. Sound normally travels through the air 340 meters per second (760 mph) at sea level at 72 degrees Fahrenheit. Sound travels through the water about 1,500 meters/second and through a solid about 5,000 meters/second. I did read that even though most of the explosive force was above ground, it still generated seismic waves equivalent to a magnitude 3.3 earthquake.
