Its very easy to beat Mentzer and the rest when you have the promoter and almost all the judges in your pocket, hence why Bill Pearl stepped down as head judge for that contest as he was heard saying "I don't want anything do with this fiasco" If you just do some journalistic digging you'll eventually find out the real reason why Arnold in 8 weeks decided to suddenly train and enter that show. Here's a great article to read starkcenter.org/igh/igh-v11/igh-v11-n1/igh1101p04.pdf Also I will say in certain shots and photo's Arnold does look quite impressive in 1980 compared to the rest but nothing compared to the Arnold of 1974. Bodybuilders were appearing on popular TV shows (Hulk) and films (Arnold), bodybuilding mag circulations were rising, bodybuilders were competing in mainstream TV show competitions (World's Strongest Man, etc). Bodybuilding was going mainstream, and it was great. After the 1980/81 Olympias, Pro Bodybuilding lost all credibility, TV dropped their competitions like a hot potato, and the sport has never been more than a fringe sport in terms of broadcasting since. I make sure to bring up that Arnold bought the 80/81 Olympias whenever I can ... even to the point of it not being relevant to the conversation (ha). . Evidence of toxic narcissism exists - and, it sure as hell exists with 'Ah-nald'.. here is an example: [1] After the 80' Olympia Tom Platz went and swore his allegiance to Arnold - Tom's own words from his audiobook. [2] In 81 Tom was in fantastic shape - what was he going to 'do' (about Franco 'winning') after he'd backed Arnold? [3] In 82 Tom was once again in fantastic shape - but, he'd torn his bicep. The only person he told about his injury was Arnold. Arnold then proceeded to tell the judges. So, the judges demanded Tom do poses that accentuated his injury.

In his magazines during the 80's when bodybuilders were interviewed a common question asked was what weider principles do you use in the gym. The fact is joe weider had stole all these principles from Vince Gironda a retired competing bodybuilder but was still training many clients at his gym in Hollywood. Vince was very well known for his knowledge of how to train and to take a physique and see what needed to be done. The hollywood movie industry would send Vince actors all the time that needed to get in shape for a movie or a television role ie sylvester stallone, clint eastwood, cher and many others, also many top bodybuilders trained at Vinces Gym as it was called, Larry Scott the first mr olympia, Mohamed Makkawy.(type at youtube mohamed makkawy posing routine 1984 mr olympia) Anyway Vince had stated that when he put his clients on certain programs joe weider would scoff at his routines but soon joe realized these programs were actually working and working rather well. So joe stole them and proclaimed them as his own. Vince some years later had said "it's funny joe weider has enough money to buy and sell me a thousands times over and yet he's terrified of me and avoids me at all cost, he stole my training principles and ideas and yet he still gets them wrong". Vince was very well known for not taking any shit from anyone infact in the original rocky movies Sylvestor Stallone based his boxing coach opon Vince.

As a "sport" bodybuilding has always suffered from its subjective scoring. While clear miscarriages of justice like these examples are difficult to argue, without a numerical metric for performance there will always be controversy. In a way it's what makes it so popular. Everyone roots for their favourite and argues the toss over their wins and losses. Certainly KZbin love us lot arguing apples and oranges with each-other. Now at the age of 50 I can't help but think who cares? It's grown men trying to out-man one-another in a non-contact way. Bodybuilding has taken on a whole new macabre look to me now, and I can't help but think the whole thing is a bit daft. And before the hate comes rolling in, I still lift weights and have done for over 35 years. I will only stop the day I can't get out of bed anymore. The health-benefits are unquestionable, the beauty pageant has long since lost it's allure. Sorry if that sounds negative. I guess I'm wondering if anyone else thinks the same.

The IFBB is not the only sports federation, by far, that puts the face of the competitors they think can sell the most tickets and merchandise as the representative and champion of their sport. The Weiders considered Arnold and Franco to be their golden boys who drew the biggest revenues for them and whenever they had an opportunity to hand them the Sandow they couldn't turn it down, because it meant they were looking forward to a banner year in sales. Their foremost concern was the prosperity of the organisation, not awarding the actual top physique. Sad - Disappointing - True.

You can hear some of the booing in the GMV video of the competition. The booing was edited out in the documentary, entitled “The Comeback.” In fact, they cut Arnold’s victory speech short in the documentary because of the booing. I don’t know that the photos were altered in Joe Weider’s publications, but I do know from the late Peter McGough, who was the editor in chief for the magazine, that all of the comparison photos of Arnold with the other bodybuilders disappeared from the Weider archives.

I also heard that Arnold purchased all the 80 Olympia footages from CBS sports who had filmed the contest 😳

John, did Mike decide definitively after the 1980 Olympia that he was not going to compete again or was the aftermath of the 1981 Olympia (which he, Boyer Coe, and Frank Zane boycotted) the final straw for him?

It was after the 1981 Olympia that he decided he would not compete again. He was still considering competing until he saw what happened in Columbus, Ohio.

Mike deserved to win in 1980. Tom deserved to win in 1981. Arnold and Franco cheated.

Regarding the 1980 Mr.Olympia: Evertbody ask youself a question. Would Arnold come out of retirement and risk his PERFECT record of wins in every Olympia he competed in? I doubt it. But if Arnold could get the judges to rig the contest in his favor then he could easily come out of retirement without having to risk his perfect record of wins as the contest would already be rigged in his favor. MENTZER should have won purely on overall muscle separation throughout the ENTIRE body.

I was at the 1980 Olympia and yes we did boo Arnold from the stage. He did not deserve to win. You need to look at Paul Grahams involvement in the results. As I was told by a judge on the day that Paul told him Arnold has to win.
