Tom, what an absolute pleasure to watch you create the illumination in this piece by slowly and thoughtfully subtracting from the white of the paper. As you painted the darker passage in the foreground, it looked like the sun came out and shined through the skylight in the ceiling, illuminating the statues below. I could watch this many more times and still keep learning, it is so informative as you speak about what you are doing and why, while you paint. I thank you profusely for the time and effort you put into this most wonderful lesson. Thank you, so much!

I really rearly leave a comment on youtube, but i can really feel that you're enjoying what you're doing! I'm currently an architecture student and actually learning Watercolor (as part of our syllabus) to be honest I didn't like most of my painting because i dont feel the connection with the subject and i also noticed that my painting studies looks way much better than my output.😂 kinda funny but atleast i get to keep my paintings I really love your work and I'm so glad i discovered you❤ I might not be one of your students but I'm really grateful that i can learn from you through youtube. I'm afraid of practicing watercolor as I do not get the ratio of water to paint and mess up at the end. But as soon as I watch you creating a masterpiece I feel I also am able to create something nice. Such a power you have! I haven't ever learned painting or drawing from anyone in my life. But I love to explore everything myself. Thanks a ton for inspiring me so much!!

Lovely message - Thank you so much. The water/pigment ratio in the brush is something that always varies depending on the effect you want, but keeping it as wet as possible is usually the way to go. It gets a LOT easier with just a little practice

​@@thomaswschallerYes Sir, I'll practice pushing far away the fear of messing up again. Another problem I face is deciding how much detail should I include. It's such a difficult and simultaneously brilliant medium of painting and you are one of the greatest masters of it.

I hear you and understand - usually fewer details are better - "Suggest - Don't state" And there's no need for fear. It's important to remember that it's fun! If you make mistakes - so what? Excellent lesson, as someone who is trying to figure out just who I am as a painter, watching your methods as well as hearing your philosophy is eye opening. Did you say that you don't stretch your paper but merely tape it down to your surface? Thanks for so much info. I admire your work greatly.

Thanks so much, Erik - Yes for smaller paintings - 1/2 sheets or less - i don't think stretching is necessary. Modern sizing is very different than it was years ago

I really enjoyed watching the whole process, from the thumbnail to the almost finished painting. There are not many artists who can clearly explain/teach their process. This was very informative, and the end result made me want to paint. I love the style of your paintings. So very elegant! Just one technical question : what brand of masking tape do you use when you fix your paper on a board? Mine tend to damage the paper when I remove it (which is very frustrating). Merci beaucoup !

Thanks so much. I use Scotch Brand masking tape (much the same as painter's tape) nothing fancy.

When I see that the tape is starting to damage the paper, I heat it slightly with a hair dryer to soften the glue. It releases much better then.

Hello Sir, If i make a grey myself is it the same grey as neutral teint ? (I don't have this color). In fact you don't use at all opaques colors in that beautiful watercolor ? They are maybe some words i did not understand sorry (i'm french).. Thank you Sir..

Je n'utilise pas de couleurs opaques - sauf une ou deux couleurs "spéciales" uniquement - Jaune de Naples et Lavande - de Holbein. Sinon, j'utilise toutes les couleurs transparentes. La teinte neutre n'est pas grise. Ce n’est pas opaque. C'est une sorte de violette. Vous pouvez facilement créer des neutres sur la surface du papier en permettant aux compléments de se mélanger humides sur humides sur la surface du papier. Je parle assez bien français

@@thomaswschaller Oui vous parlez parfaitement bien le français.. merci c'est gentil à vous. Et merci pour votre réponse. Vos mélanges transparents sont superbes et j'aime particulièrement les ajouts de couleur dans la robe de la petite fille et le costume du visiteur notamment.. cela donne un "relief" magnifique. Je vais essayer d'oser l'apport de couleurs après séchage comme vous le faites avec le gros pinceau à lavis pour tenter d' augmenter le rapport de valeurs. C'est mon défaut principal comme beaucoup de gens qui pratiquent depuis moins longtemps ... Je ne suis pas certaine de réussir à remplacer la teinte neutre. Je vais peut-être tout simplement en acquérir un tube avant de commencer. C'est souvent pour pallier à nos lacunes qu'on emploie les couleurs opaques mais je vois bien que c'est un très mauvais calcul. Merci beaucoup Monsieur Schaller 🙏

@@rosine2 Oui, une plage de valeurs claire - du foncé au clair - est très importante. Il n’est pas indispensable d’avoir une teinte neutre. Les valeurs et les couleurs transparentes sont les plus importantes. Les opaques ne doivent être utilisés qu’avec parcimonie

Of course - The story you want to tell. What is it you wish to emphasize? In a view like this, I could focus primarily on the statuary, the viewers, the architecture, the light, etc etc. The painter has to use all these things to design a painting with a unique point of view - using his or her voice alone. Otherwise you are just copying what you are looking at - Cameras can do that
