It’s always a plus for us when it’s rainy , cold or snowing in NYC.

Ok, "...better, in your way of thinking.. Not better objectively but better personally.." Hmmm, that's something I've never heard before. I'll keep watching. I always enjoy your videos. And your voice is so soothing. I need that this weekend. :)

didn't mean to sound confusing - just that I think we all need to think of "rules" in art more as options - "tools" that can work for us, and can make our work more personal and expressive

Not confusing at all. It's very helpful. @thomaswschaller

Thank you for a very useful primer on perspective. Your way of instruction is so easy to follow and to understand. This video was VERY useful for me - a fledgling artist - who needs all the help he can get. Finishing the video with the drawing of the trees and tying together not only perspective, but color depth & value, was a neat way to end the lesson. Thanks!

I can relate to your comment about knowing when to put the brush down and not overwork. Makes me think of a spin on the "mic drop" phrase - brush drop!

Hello Thomas! Good to watch you draw. I'm terrible at drawing in spite of taking numerous classes. I hope you can help me remember the "rules" of perspective and maybe give me some simple techniques to use, if that's realistic at all.

I think you'll find it much easier than you might think . Hope it helps

Well I understand the mixing colors,almost…but the drawing is stunning..that’s I need to learn but I don’t have time to make a school anymore 😢I understand drawing what you see,but perspective is not quite simple.What tutorials are good for beginners? I am glad to find you,thanks for sharing your experience!

i have a number of drawing tutorials here on YT - but I'll load one specifically on perspective

I had to watch this twice, because I learned so much. I tend to paint everything I see in a picture, and am really trying to learn how to simplify my style. I love detail so much that it is a struggle to pull back. The illustrator in me fights with the painterly loose style. I also learned a lot from your color mixtures. Thank you for sharing your talent!
@thomaswschaller6 күн бұрын
Thanks for watching. Yes - Many of us struggle with that. But in the end, I think we have to decide on the kind of painter we want to be. Detail is not always wrong. But does it help? Does it make the painting better or just distract? Often none, or just a little is plenty. Other times, too much is never enough. Depends on the painter and the painting

Dear Thomas, I thank you for teaching us your knowledge. I live in South America, Chile. I am very grateful to have found and seen your works. I love your color proposal, it is what I was looking for, since many painters today who teach on the Internet are, in my opinion, very lacking in color.
@thomaswschaller10 күн бұрын
Thank you so much. I appreciate it. In fairness , I emphasize the use of value more than color. But color carries the value and I think color should used in moderation and with clear intention.

Thomas, thank you for a nice afternoon exploring value sketching and painting planning. I took many art classes in college but never got this type of coaching. As a retiree I am revisiting my love of art and was struggling. With your help, I feel both freer to explore, and in control with some goals to discover my perspectives and feelings about design and my art. Thanks

love your paintings as always, but i find this funny: TS: "i prefer using sedimentary colors so i don't like quinacridones and phthalos" also TS: "anyway here's imperial purple, manganese blue hue, and neutral tint" (and no i'm no color purist but doest the artist protest too much?) I JEST I JEST
@thomaswschaller14 күн бұрын
there's a method to my madness. All pigments have an element of "staining" of course - But I try to favor those that are more sediment-based rather than those that are primarily dye-based
@gibbsphenomenon14 күн бұрын
@ i know i'm poking fun at the me 10 yrs ago who would have obsessed over such a detail
@thomaswschaller14 күн бұрын
@@gibbsphenomenon Maybe. But it's anything but a detail. There's an ocean of difference between sediment-based and dye-based pigments : how they behave and how they affect the outcome. I really don't care at all what anyone else chooses to do , but I was just trying to explain why I use what I do for anyone out there who may care.

Such useful advice both in terms of how to make watercolour work in satisfying ways, but also how to feel about it all. It's so comforting to hear someone who is considered a master of the art express similar doubts, but also then to watch you essentially doodling with the paint and see that the watercolour behaves the same for you as it does for me. I'm not expressing this very well but that in itself delighted me, and so did seeing how you didn't stop with the one stroke, but fiddled with the edges, or dropped in that different colour. It helps me to realise I'm too precious about it myself and too scared to mess up a dry brush stoke once it's done, when I could be playing with it and enhancing it. Now I need to get my watercolour pad out and play.
@thomaswschaller15 күн бұрын
Thank you so much for the message. Yes! It's really just playing. Watercolor has a mind of it's own and the more we embrace that - the better our work can be.
