In this episode of Beyond Belief Sobriety, you will meet John C. from Paris, Vick Losick, from New York City, John Huey from Washington D.C., and Larry Knight from Toronto. The four appeared on the podcast to talk about a new secular recovery meeting they started called “Afternoon with the Atheists,” which is named after a panel discussion they have been presenting at Secular AA Conferences since 2016.
The meeting is intended to provide a safe space for atheists or secularly-minded people in general to find support for their recovery without the burden of a Higher Power, 12 Steps, Traditions, and all the slogans and language found in 12 Step meetings.
The meetings are held on Zoom every Sunday at 2:00 PM EST.

Thoroughly enjoyed your discussion. I live in and am recovering in the Bible belt, and there is little sanctuary here for non-believers. I manage to navigate AA, but I look forward to exploring the opportunities for secular recovery you mention. I'm tired of feeling like an outcast in AA meetings.

Thank you all, I found this very refreshing. I share in the frustration of having to defend myself and my non-belief in meetings. It ranges from insulting "there there" pat me on the head and they add " thank you for your truth" while adding the " keep coming back" as if the problem is I've not been to enough meetings. I'm 33 years sober and a shortage of meetings is not an issue. I have not been to a traditional meeting in about 2 years, since covid actually. It's been some of the best time in my sobriety. I allowed myself room to grow by reading and exploring and with the help of fellow AAAA's in chats and online discussions. I sincerely thank all of you for sharing what you do and adding to the richness of our sober lives.

Thank you John. I'm particularly intrigued by the guest's use of the word "unaffiliated" to describe this new meeting. I've met John H online and was vaguely aware of Vic L, but the other two guests are new to me. I look forward to attending their meeting.

Hard when you live in a state where there is no secular meetings. How would one start a secular meeting? What book would you use?

When Betty Ford and Hazelden recovery gave the county the rights to recovery, it became big business and as Atheists, do your meeting, have a democratic process, or just draw names out of the hat? Vs. round robbin rules being less structured than , conventional recovery mthods?

I am agnostic and looking into alternatives to AA. So far I have gotten a healthy resentment against atheists and other agnostics. Holy sheet! If secularism was half as smart or half as superior to everyone as athiests and some agnostics think, we wouldn't have so many people sitting around complaining. You shouldn't have to complain about churches or AA. You should have already built something better. I clicked on this to hear how good YOU are, not hear more complaining about AA.

Don’t let the fake testaments of the AA group make you feel small. You are just as important with your feelings, we are not cookie cutter people and AA is not a fix it all for all problems, Feel healthy it’s normal to question AA and it’s big book.
