Les Dennis is excellent in this. He’s more a comedian than actor historically but he showed some talent in this I didn’t know he had.

This episode resurrected Les's career. After his divorce he went into the Celebrity Big Brother house and had a very public breakdown. The fact he can send that up here, own it and rise above it earned him a lot of credit. Fair play to him.

The young blondes that Les Dennis gets with is probably a reference to his relationship with Amanda Holden back in the day that went down the pan

You mean after she had an affair with Neil Morrisey? Holden was a gold digger with no respect for her marriage vows. That's the reference point for the blond.

I think Ricky views the whole notion of fame and celebrity with disdain and Extras is the perfect vehicle for him to express that. He expresses the same sentiment at the Golden Globes to an audience of elites that is completely unfamiliar to not so much insults but scorn and contempt.

Ricky Gervais was a brilliant writer, and was a master at writing self-deprecation in himself and others. Extra's is better if you know the Z-list celebrities in it who were massive in the 1980's. It's also better for watching the entire episode as it flows better (I know you can't broadcast the entire episode due top copyright). Gervais is very self-aware and can be very poignant in his writing. There are some superb episodes, which included Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan.
