I saw a Hikaru interview yesterday talking about the Magnus incident there seems to have been a lot of friction between what Fide wants and what Magnus wants this clothing violation is just a catalyst of other issues going on . Hikaru did say the chief arbiter of Fide is on a power kick . Hikaru feels Magnus might not participate again in Fide events instead have his own event like the Random Chess . The bottomline is I believe there’s something deeper going on than this dress code violation .

I don't think Magnus should have any special treatment from other players regarding following rules. But I do think if they wanted to correct peoples attire they should have done it before round 1 of that day, not in the middle. And especially wanting anyone to go change after already playing 3 out of 4 rounds that day is just idiotic. Plus, I think stupid rules should not be applied at all and not allowing jeans is definitely stupid rule. This is not wedding but chess tournament and players should be dressed comfortably and decently. There is nothing wrong about jeans - i had many high level business meetings wearing jeans, shirt and jacket. This is not 1925 but 2025 which FIDE somehow missed.

here’s GPT response: The slang term "based" is often used to describe someone who is confident, authentic, and unapologetically themselves, especially in the face of criticism or societal norms. It can also imply that a person has strong beliefs or opinions that they express without concern for what others think. The term has its roots in internet culture and has been popularized in various online communities, often associated with a sense of respect for someone who stands their ground or speaks their mind. It can be used both positively and negatively, depending on the context.

The idea that the game of chess somehow requires a dress code at all, let alone a freaking suit, is ridiculous. It is nothing but a weird anachronism at this point, and I suspect that we will see the dress code quietly dropped in the coming years. If not, FIDE may slowly become irrelevant, as more and more players emulate Magnus and say, "Fuck you, I'm not gonna do that." And those players will have a point. I mean, it's chess, who cares how the players dress?? What matters is what happens on the board. The idea that chess is some kind of rarified game fit solely for elite well-dressed gentlemen is something from a previous century and should have been put to bed long before this. Magnus is correct to call them on it, IMO.

I think every professional event has a dress code

Yes but the time to call them out on it would have been to decline to participate in the first place, not wait until you start losing and then use the dress code as cover.

@@Requinix17 That's a fair point. The optics of it are not great, I'll admit. Doesn't mean Magnus is wrong, but yeah maybe there are some ulterior motives at play in what he did, and maybe not just because he wasn't playing his best, either. In any event, I was never a big Magnus fan, I just dislike dress codes on principle.

It wouldn't be such a big deal if it was enforced on everyone. Other plays were clearly in jeans, including Hikaru, and weren't fined. Others have said that "many" players have been fined, and if that's true, then FIDE clearly has a communication error if so many players didn't follow the dress code.

Only Nepomniachi has been confirmed to be fined

Applying the dressing code for THIS particular outfit is beyond ridiculous. FIDE can't bring themselves up to the 21st century no matter what.

Now magnus is wrong here and yes how he behaves isnt mature but somebody in comment told me hans even wore jeans on day 1 and daniel came up with table tennis shoes...if its true then why diff rules? Where was the arbiter ? And most importantly the way they made him and nepo forfeit next round even after charging isnt fair .. did they paid attentiom to other breachers of the dress code

Well, FIDE is partially to be blamed for this. Here are my 2 cents..... If its so much about rules being followed, which usually is the case, then they should be upheld at the door, not after sitting in the chair to start the game. Magnus or any other player should have been asked at the door of the venue itself to go and change before the games begin. Say just in case, it wasn't spotted and the first game for the day begins, and let's call it a human error on FIDE's part since they are the ones making and checking if the rules are followed, he or any other player should be asked to change before the second game begins or they won't get paired. These are how things should have been run. Magnus didn't care about the fine and they fined him on his own suggestion. That was another ridiculous thing. He should have been fined on non-compliance after the first game and not paired from the 2nd until he changed his attire. this should have been an automatic. the fact he played 3 games and was then asked to change shows casual behavior on FIDE's part. Magnus or anyone else of his stature will obviously take undue advantage when things are run so loosely. it was FIDE's failure to observe and see if the rules are being followed to the tee. anyway, at least they did the right thing in the end by not pairing him for game 9 and we all know what followed. This episode was a mistake on both parts and it also does go to show that no player is above the rules in any game or sport. Humility is key. Magnus will and of course survive without FIDE as the world and he himself knows he is the best in all formats. Hope FIDE takes something from this and have learned their lesson too.

No, he's entering his "FIDE sucks and I'm going to do something about it" phase.
