I think the fact that they made Ian Nepomniatchi change earlier in the day and he complied, tied FIDE's hands. They couldn't possibly make an exception for Magnus because he is the GOAT. Sure, agree, the rules are archaic and need to change but FIDE can't apply different standards for different players. Hopefully, this results in FIDE just doing away with a 19th century dress code rule. If someone wants to play in t-shirt and shorts, does anyone really care?

I've to say, with respect, that when Vishy was elected to FIDE, I had hoped that he would play a very active role to change the archaic nature of FIDE and make it more modern player friendly. But that hasn't happened. And understandable that Vishy probably doesn't like getting into too much of the decision making. But I had wished that he did more proactively. Hope that FIDE evaluates what's going on. If you look at this incident with some perspective, FIDE has a no jeans rule, Magnus forgets the rule, when warned he admits honest mistake and asks for one more round allowance. Instead, FIDE has somehow decided that removing one of the greatest players and definitely the most popular, marketable player is a better decision. Over an utterly insignificant rule. True, Magnus could've been more compliant. But individuals can have ego-driven decisions. FIDE like organizations should not make ego-based decisions. Have to think about what's best for the event/chess. It's like a chicken with no head kind of decision, just blind technicality following. Now hoping they are talking to Magnus to get him to play the Blitz at least.
@OsbornsConcise
@OsbornsConcise 15 сағат бұрын
Rules are rules and should be followed. Not knowing or forgetting the rule does not exempt you from the obligation to follow it. And its your obligation to get informed of the rule. Imagine if you play a game of chess, and the guy forgot the en passant rule and says “honest mistake, i forgot”. It doesnt work like that. One shouldnt complain about someone enforcing the rules which exist for everyone. No one is exempt, even Magnus. They gave him an opportunity to change, he refused. The hotel was nearby. I dont see how they were unreasonable,
@friya196
@friya196 15 сағат бұрын
Magnus was already warned previously and chose not to follow of his own accord. Just because magnus is marketable and famous doesn't mean he should be devoid of rules everyone follows. Chess existed before him, and will exist after him.

Every sport has rules and dress codes. This isn't some strange concept. FIDE is bigger than anyone one player. Kasparov tried to prove otherwise and it didn't work. This time is no different. If players in general want more relaxed rules they need to band together BEFORE events and file a petition with FIDE to come to an agreement. Not act like children when rules are enforced.

Hardly the same as an arbitrary "no torn pants or jeans" so does that mean jeans that are not torn are ok? Could be interpreted. And where in the rules do we disqualify him from a pairing? nowhere.... this was political and maybe even personal for Vishy too, and I think we just watched the death of FIDE more so than ever before, and now it is part of Vishy's legacy. FIDE did not act because of "anything else going on". First, they did not ban Carlsen. He could have returned the next day with proper attire; he just wasn't allowed to continue while violating the dress code. Second, it was an arbiter's decision, not FIDE's decision. Third, it would have been trivial for Carlsen to avoid the drama, by making a 3min trip to the hotel or getting someone to fetch proper trousers for him. There probably were multiple things "going on" for Carlsen (poor performance in the tournament / his aspirations for non-FIDE events to be called "world championship" events), but as far as FIDE is concerned, they only enforced the rules that every player agreed to ahead of the tournament.

Is the rule silly and archaic? Yes. Is a player required to follow the rules until they change? Also, yes. The right solution for a player of Magnus' stature is to advocate for rules to change, esp. because it's not like this specific issue was raised by the players and ignored by FIDE or the organizers. To simply walk off when he is already doing badly in the tournament reflects poorly on Magnus, and also seems like it is the result of other issues that are going on between Magnus and FIDE beyond this one.

Rules are rules. No player can be above rules. After all these rules are framed not by an autocrat or king or individual but by an institute after a lot of deliberations and discussions, and are supposed to take care of the game of chess. Not following rules mean basically you are treating yourself above the game of chess. I am sure if Vishy was in place of Magnus he would have simply changed the pants or if it was not possible he would have apologized, forfeited the game and would have been ready for the next round in proper dress code. In India there is tendency to abuse the institutions or the persons guarding the institution. This is my opinion and of course a generalized one. We should try to strengthen the institutes. After all these institutes will help nurture and grow the game. Players will come and go but institutes should remain strong and progress.

Magnus decided to leave the tournament "principle". It is his right. The winners are only a few content authors ...clicks. Rules were known before the tournament ...
