I've to say, with respect, that when Vishy was elected to FIDE, I had hoped that he would play a very active role to change the archaic nature of FIDE and make it more modern player friendly. But that hasn't happened. And understandable that Vishy probably doesn't like getting into too much of the decision making. But I had wished that he did more proactively. Hope that FIDE evaluates what's going on. If you look at this incident with some perspective, FIDE has a no jeans rule, Magnus forgets the rule, when warned he admits honest mistake and asks for one more round allowance. Instead, FIDE has somehow decided that removing one of the greatest players and definitely the most popular, marketable player is a better decision. Over an utterly insignificant rule. True, Magnus could've been more compliant. But individuals can have ego-driven decisions. FIDE like organizations should not make ego-based decisions. Have to think about what's best for the event/chess. It's like a chicken with no head kind of decision, just blind technicality following. Now hoping they are talking to Magnus to get him to play the Blitz at least.
@OsbornsConcise15 сағат бұрын
Rules are rules and should be followed. Not knowing or forgetting the rule does not exempt you from the obligation to follow it. And its your obligation to get informed of the rule. For Carlsen yes, but not necessarily FIDE.
@coolcat235 сағат бұрын
FIDE did not act because of "anything else going on". First, they did not ban Carlsen. He could have returned the next day with proper attire; he just wasn't allowed to continue while violating the dress code. Second, it was an arbiter's decision, not FIDE's decision. Third, it would have been trivial for Carlsen to avoid the drama, by making a 3min trip to the hotel or getting someone to fetch proper trousers for him. There probably were multiple things "going on" for Carlsen (poor performance in the tournament / his aspirations for non-FIDE events to be called "world championship" events), but as far as FIDE is concerned, they only enforced the rules that every player agreed to ahead of the tournament.

Is the rule silly and archaic? Yes. Is a player required to follow the rules until they change? Also, yes. The right solution for a player of Magnus' stature is to advocate for rules to change, esp. because it's not like this specific issue was raised by the players and ignored by FIDE or the organizers. To simply walk off when he is already doing badly in the tournament reflects poorly on Magnus, and also seems like it is the result of other issues that are going on between Magnus and FIDE beyond this one.

Rules are rules. No player can be above rules. After all these rules are framed not by an autocrat or king or individual but by an institute after a lot of deliberations and discussions, and are supposed to take care of the game of chess. Not following rules mean basically you are treating yourself above the game of chess. I am sure if Vishy was in place of Magnus he would have simply changed the pants or if it was not possible he would have apologized, forfeited the game and would have been ready for the next round in proper dress code. In India there is tendency to abuse the institutions or the persons guarding the institution. This is my opinion and of course a generalized one. We should try to strengthen the institutes. After all these institutes will help nurture and grow the game. Players will come and go but institutes should remain strong and progress.

Magnus looked presentable enough to me. Are the dress standards clearly briefed to the players before hand? Why wasn't this issue raised at the beginning of the day when Magnus arrived? Since they left it until before the final round to notify him, they should have allowed him to play as is until the following day. It seems to me that FIDE stuffed up their own processes here! Losing the GOAT from their tournament over a trivial thing seems to me like a big FAIL! Vishy as deputy president should have intervened before it escalated like this.

He was informed after his second game on day 2 that his attire was violating the dress code and was fined 200usd and asked to change for the next round.
