This event was played in Neuhausen am Rheinfall and Zürich. 1 These are the games in order according to David Bronstein's excellent book, Zurich International Chess Tournament 1953. He participated in the tournament with the strongest players in the world at that time in a candidates match to determine the next challenger to world champion Mikhail Botvinnik.
The Swiss Chess Federation spent 100,000 Swiss francs in order to stage the event, which was one of the reasons they insisted that host countries pay the travel expenses for their respective players. Prize money for first place was 5,000 Swiss francs. Alois Nagler was tournament director. 1 All contestants brought a second except for Bronstein and Reshevsky: Miroljub Trifunovic (Gligoric), Salomon Flohr (Taimanov), Julio Bolbochan (Najdorf), Andre Lilienthal (Petrosian), Mikhail Beilin (Averbakh), Carel Benjamin van den Berg (Euwe), Kristian Skold (Stahlberg), Tibor Florian (Szabó), Alexey Sokolsky (Boleslavsky), Viktor Moiseev (Kotov), Igor Bondarevsky (Geller), Vladimir Simagin (Smyslov), and Alexander Kazimirovich Tolush (Keres).

Keres is my favorite player. And Petrosian is a player, a Champion, who is often over-looked by amateurs. Your commentary gives the players such personality! I really like that about you, Agadmator. Mr Marks TV Fischer overrated, actually good players are players like Capablanca and Tal, Fischer was good but he wasn’t a god

@@teteeheeted Bobby Fischer was higher rated than both of the players you mentioned. Bobby Fischer beat Petrosian 6 1/2 - 2 1/2 in a match, beat Mark Taimanov 6-0 in a match, and was the first 2700 rated player in the world. He may not be the best player of all time but he is certainly not overrated. He is certainly better than Tal and certainly better than Capablanca. I would argue he is 3rd best player ever after with Kasparov and Carlsen dueling it out for 1st and 2nd.

#blockade 5:25 to 7:25 to covers the main idea of this game. Petrosian's ability to construct a blockade and Keres unwillingness to break it. Nd3 and Qf5 very instructional moves by petrosian.

I am an inexperienced player, but why not knight to c4 check when the game was drawn? If taken with bishop, rook takes, immediately threatening the b5 pawn. If it isn't taken, moves like knight to b7 or e6 could be appealing depending on where the king moves.

I think you meant Nc5, and imo the reason is the same - bishop takes knight, rook takes bishop, Kd6 both threatening the rook and defending the pawn, and then it's just as much of a stalemate. And in the unlikely situation that the bishop doesn't take the knight, the b7 pawn would be moved (b6 threatening the knight) or defended by the rook, resulting in more of the same deadlock. both players simply didn't see a decisive breakthrough nor, as agadmator pointed out, want to risk one

that's a good point, because after Bxe6, Kxe6, Rxc8 the knight. but probably Petrosian didn't want to trade a bishop for a knight (even with the extra pawn) and preferred to develop his knight, being a defensive player. but i personally would've done that

I saw that too. I think that white's bishop is so much better than black's knight on c8 that keeping them on the board is better than winning a pawn.

After 28. Bxe6 Kxe6, 29. Rxc8 Rc5 looks strong. Either the white rook has to move to the side or, when exchanging rooks, the bishop will dominate the knight and the black king is better placed in the middle of the board. They both must have seen the bishop capture on e6 and concluded it's not a good move. Maybe someone with an engine can help.

That's a good move for black. But any other move is better for white. If white keeps the rook with another pawn up, blacks pawns are much weaker and will fall. Nd3 looks good if white can manage to defend the knight. Maybe Rf3

Well, that also explains your opinion. But it doesn't make the video not educational. if you are below beginner level maybe watch more tutorials rather than analysis of GM games. If you work hard you should get a grasp on fundamentals quickly and then you can appreciate the games that Agad covers on his videos. Also, use the analysis and learning tools from chess websites to learn from your own games. Report back when you get past the below beginner level. Good luck!
