2:26 d4 seems to be mostly to prevent white from playing d4 moreso than the knight attack. Not pushing d4 means giving white a strong center with no compensation for the bishop pair and black with less development.

Real tragedy is Iran's Chess Federation banning the tournament and that is why Alireza had to play under Fide flag. Another talent from my country lost. SMH
