Nice to hear Tony Miles (RIP) get a mention. He was a neighbour of ours here in Birmingham (he lived ten houses from us). He was a great company; a fit and strong rugby player; a combative chess player; and, our first grandmaster. Tony and I both felt that if it wasn’t for the fact that Jonathan Penrose worked full-time he would have gotten the GM award before Tony (Jonathan was born 22 years earlier and made his mark by beating my hero Mikhail Tal). I agreed with Tony re Jonathan, but also pointed the that British chess needed someone like him to open the door for others (which he did). I always felt some of our stronger players flinched when GM was a possibility, but Tony just kept charging….

That was not the St.George Defense. Basically, Magnus blundered on the 1st move. For the St George, Black must play ..a6, ..b5, ..Bb7 - this is the St.George. It gives black the a8-h1 diagonal, and control of the c4 square-stopping bishops opening, italian, and a lot of other Bc4 attacking ideas. It is worth studying and adding to your opening arsenal.
