Perhaps the title of the video should read, "In exchange for the White's Rook and Knight, Black will move both his knights to the Queen side of the board as fast as possible for no reason".

The mark of a great player lies in his ability to punish innacuracies briliantly. Im willing to bet a lot of money that if you had that position on the board you would still lose against a player of Maurice's caliber.

In fairness he is correct (albeit being very metaphorically loud about it) 5:22 blacks best defence is Kg8 here. This gets out of reach of the discovery. Nf5 can be met with Rxf5 and Nf3 can be met with Rf6 and whites queen can't take the pawn on g7. Black is therefore winning by his material advantage. Furthermore, when Qxg7+ is played, Qh8# is slightly faster.

1:26 -- I wonder if Morphy's chess lesson to Charles de Maurian was to "place your knights safely on the edge of the board" and "be sure to create space around your king by advancing the pawns of his castle" ... and so forth.

It's always easy to say how much players "sucked" back then, but you have to remember that there was practically no theory compared to today. So, it's not a question of how "bad" Morphy's opponents were - it's more of how "good" Morphy was.

Others have pointed out that the long checkmate is unnecessary, but I'd like to point out that black is winning after Rh8+ (5:05 in the video). Black doesn't have to make an escape square for the king immediately because of the two tempi white's move order gives him. After Rh8+ Kxh8, Qh2+ Bh4+, Nxh4 black can use the tempo to move Kg8. Now if white persists in playing Nf5, Rxf5 clears the escape square for the king. Black will be losing the exchange, but he started with such huge odds that it makes no difference. Rf8 is a bad move, but it's bad because of Rh7 with a threat of doubling on the h-file with Qh2. The only move black has to stop this plan is giving up material with Bh4+. After Nxe4, black does have to move the rook to clear an escape square. If he moves Re8, then Qe2 renews the threat of doubling on the h-file, this time with Qh5. If Rf6, then Qh2 is winning. Black's best move is to start retreating the king with Kf8, but then Rh8+ wins the queen.

Qxe8 Rg6+ Kf7 Ne5# or Qxe8 Rg6+ Qxg6 Qxg6# is why you can't go for that line, I believe. I think Bd6 is the only move that doesn't get checkmated immediately (although I think it still gets checkmated as Antonio showed). Rg8 is mate in 2, Qxe8 is also mate in 2, Rxe8 is mate in 1 and the King itself can't move anywhere.

5:03min. ...why sacing the Rook?! Qh2 is better, or?! 🤔
@arazaratsyan6478
@arazaratsyan6478 4 жыл бұрын
Maybe something like Qh2 Bh4+ Nxh4 Rf6 stops the checkmate. I'm not sure; it seems complicated.
@poolzokka
@poolzokka 4 жыл бұрын
@@arazaratsyan6478 yup. But I think, then Nf5 (can't be taken), Rxg6 forced. Then NxBe7+ and Qxe7. Followed by Qh8+, Kf7 forced. And Ra7. End is looming. ...I think 😅
@arazaratsyan6478
@arazaratsyan6478 4 жыл бұрын
Maybe Bxg6+ leads to something for white after Kf7 instead of Ra7. But Kxg6 and then I don't see what white can do. There's a perpetual with Qh5+ Kf6 Qg5+ Qh5+ Kf8 Qh8+ etc. but I don't see anything better for white.

@@poolzokka So I came back to this with an engine out of curiosity, and apparently you're right. Stockfish gives Qh2 as mate in approximately 30 moves. Antonio's rook sac is actually losing, apparently. Instead of Rf6 in the line he showed, Black plays Kg8 and is winning. I guess he missed Kg8 or something.

Morphy didn't miss it. That was a variation that never arose because black played a different move.

On the variation with the rook sac, you missed a faster mate.as you showed in the video, Rh8+ Kh8, Qh2+ Bh4, Nxh4 Rf6, Nf5+ Kg8, Qh7+ Kf8, happens, but then Qh8++ is checkmate immediately, instead of Qxg7, which should be significantly shorter.

Ben Finegold talks about how poorly people of Morphy's era played. This is an example of that. De Maurian not developing early and moving his knights way off to the side of the board ignoring center control are exactly Finegold's points.

Black's game started deteriorating at move 4. With those odds, Morphy had to go for a quick knockout, which means a wild Kingside Attack. This means Black has to get his defenders to the Kingside. Black's move 9 ignores this and is practically equivalent to resignation.

It was clear that Charles was intent on attacking the queen side with his knights. Since this was a very bad strategy I don't know how fair it is to give Morphy credit for a great game. But it was very interesting to watch.

The main mistake of Morphy’s opponent Morphy is shooting his pawns up the Board getting his Bishops Knight his one Rook and Queen all coming for Black’s King meanwhile Morphy’s opponent is tinkering around with his Knights on the Queen side of the Board once the Black Kings defense was shredded it was like the Floodgates were open seemed as if Morphy was simply toying with him I know you had said Black did not need to go after more pieces as he already has two pieces up but maybe he should’ve used that Bishop Rook and Queen to attack Morphy’s Kings defense he didn’t instead he’s going on horse rides Thanks for the Game Agadmator
