Morphy: Help your pieces so they can help you Charles: proceeds to put his knights on the worst squares possible

Charles effectively gave Morphy "both knights plus a rook odds", except worse because he spent several moves on the knights which were essentially "free turn" odds as well.

That game was far from what I would call a gem. Morphy would be crushed by Carlsen, Karpov, Kasparov or even most modern 2700+ players.
@mclaughlinja19954 жыл бұрын
If you put Morphy in a time machine and he played a match against Carlsen, Caruana or another modern super-GM, then sure, Morphy would lose. But that’s like pointing out that Roger Federer would crush Bill Tilden with his wooden racket and 1930s game. Morphy would be at a massive disadvantage because he has no access to the hundreds of thousands of games played since his time, would be trying to figure out modern theory over the board, etc. All you can do is evaluate players in their own world, and Morphy clearly towered above his contemporaries.
@kristheobserver4 жыл бұрын
@@mclaughlinja1995 The question is what would happen if you took the toddler Morphy and give him the same opportunities that Carlsen or Caruana had? Another interesting possibility is you give our 20 year old Morphy some years to study and then see what happens.

Back then it still wasn't unusual.. for example Hugo Grotius (2-3 centuries earlier) got to University at age 11 if I remember correctly. And universities lasted for 2 years if I'm not wrong. The education wasn't so schemed and every field wasn't so wide.

@@lecobra418 That's just your cognitive bias and it's totally refuted by the facts. The amount of information and the complexity thereof on a modern university course is many times greater than it was then. Public schools start teaching children precalculus and trigonometry, subjects that used to be exclusively the domain of higher education, as a standard! There's a reason for the trope that college graduates from thirty years ago find themselves dumbfounded by their children's homework. Natural sciences, political science and economics are teaching knowledge that literally did not even exist two hundred years ago. These facts are far more compelling than your meaningless, anecdotal personal feelings about college graduates.

Unless it is part of your strategy to win! Such as, please take my knight or rook, so your queen is distracted & now can't protect/save your king! Even if material loss is not part of winning strategy/tactics, unless you foresee an unavoidable loss, you may lose opportunity to figure how to win anyway. I'm amazed how many games I almost resigned (to anticipated hopelessness) then won. Even when down a queen (oops!). Strategy, tactics, & position can overcome material differences, though it is much more difficult (& also more challenging & learning experience if you play thru until like is very likely certain).
