At 7:48 after h6 by black, why not simple capture the knight with Bxh4 instead of Ne4? I get the idea he threatens fork on d6, but does he really compensate it that much over more simplified +1 position? I mean what can black reply on capturing, if hxg5, then Bxg5 and you have great bishop. Am i missing something?

I always play the Owen Defense as black, so I was very happy to see this game! Some people consider it dubious, but it gets people out of book very quickly and is very hard to refute over the board. Cool to see Owen defeat no less than Paul Morphy with it, although I do think in this case that was largely because Morphy underestimated Owen's skill.

As this game shows, even Morphy can be overconfident and blow an advantage. Having the Exchange in your favor is very good, but you also need to keep an eye in your weaknesses, and Morphy ignored the avance of the h-pawn. When I was watching the game, I thought: "Well, Kg3, no problem", but I almost fell to the floor when he played "Ke3??". The passed pawn now has an open road, and the light squared bishop is dominating all the diagonal, ready to support. Morphy then was forced to return the Exchange, with a less active king, and worse pawn structure, leading to disaster. The lesson is: even when you are winning, be careful: as Lasker, one of the greatest chess fighters of history, once said: "The hardest game to win is a won game".

@@elasiduo108 it is said that a player has to lose a thousand games to gain the experience to go to the next level. As for Morphy I've noticed he loses after gaining great positional adv. Please show those 2v2 chess games between staunton and adams vs morphy and barnes! Marnes (morphy+barnes haha) sounds like quite the powerhouse and I would love to see those games

Owen's Defense is not odd at all. I use it all the time. See Eljanov vs. Carlsen 2017 as Magnus crushes with the Owen Def. But...let's face it...Magnus can play anything and win. Owens beat Barnes every time he played him (twice using the Evans Gambit!!!) and drew in his only game against Steinitz, so he was no joke.

Famous quote from John Owen, though unrelated to chess, "Be killing sin, or sin will be killing you." Before today I had only known him as a pastor/theologian, didn't know he was a strong chess player

John Owen (1616 - 24 August 1683) was an English Nonconformist church leader, theologian, and academic administrator at the University of Oxford. Different period

@@horacioariash ah, I must be getting Owen confused with a more modern theologian because I thought he was at least 1800s

Morphy always is defeated by weird pawn moves: f6 with barnes b6 with owen don't read this if you don't want the saga to be spoiled to you: a3 to anderssen.
