I've recently come out, and decided it's long overdue that I start my transition. I Started singing this song to myself, quietly at first, whenever I felt pangs of dysphoria. I'm a very working class factory worker, living in a very conservative area. For the longest time I was terrified of coming out. I thought I'd lose everything. I cut my long hair into a short, masculine, style- stopped wearing makeup- tried my best to talk and act like I was one of the guys. the only signs that I was even anything but your regular cis guy was my alternative fashion sense, complete aversion to sexism, shameless bisexuality, and a religious dedication to being completely clean shaven. There were tells, but for a couple of years- I passed as a man. Fast forward to the present, and I'm presenting female the majority of the time- getting laser hair removal- growing my long hair back centre metre by painstaking centre metre. Only going boymode for work because of the practical concerns of the job- 12 hour shifts, toxic chemicals, strenuous manual labour, and full body hazmat suits don't mix with wigs and makeup. But I'm out now. Everyone knows. They might not get it 100%, but for the most part everyone is just cool with it. I'm good at what I do- I'm affable enough- I pull my weight and then some- who cares if the guy thinks he's a girl?, he's some kind of new-fangled homo?, oh well, we still think he's good people. I'm now almost infamous for singing this one song all the time as I work. Often LOUDLY, often involving other people- I'm performatively extending my hands in a mock loving serenade towards my dumbfounded work mates while they laugh *with* me. It picks me up- lets me experience gender euphoria even when I look like the roughest version of the man I used to be. People find it funny and charming- they ask questions about being trans, they genuinely seem to be coming around to the idea- they see how happy I am now- and decide that it can't be a bad thing. Even if it's all going to be bullshit to them at the end of the day. Some of them even she/her me. I know they don't really believe it, but they don't need to. I have a reputation for being happy-go-lucky, for being fun and not giving a single shit what people think about me- they will never know the place of pain and anxiety my joyous singing comes from- but that's fine by me. I'm slowly, so fucking slowly, becoming the woman I always wanted to be- and I can say, without any doubt in my mind, that I couldn't have done it without this music to comfort me and carry me forwards. I have a gender neutral first name that I'm going to hold onto- But there's a reason I'm taking Laura as my new middle name. Thanks sister- couldn't have done it without you.

I know there's probably a lot of people watching this who are in the closet about their gender and feeling hopeless so I'm gonna share a story with you all. I was told for so long by family that I would never be accepted as male by them. My friends left. I felt alone. Now I have true friends, now my family accepts me. I go to a school where I have to wear a uniform and tomorrow I'm going to be wearing the boys' uniform for the first time. From tomorrow on, I will be completely myself forever. Don't lose hope. It may take time but you will get there. :)

Hey if you’re reading this, love yourself. You’re gonna be your life long companion, nothing else is a given really. Be the best you you can be and if you’re not perfect or you mess up, it’s ok. Beating yourself up or taking it out on someone won’t make you better or erase the mistake. Being imperfect is what makes us unique and beautiful. Take care of yourself too, sometimes it’s hard but it’s very very very important, all of it. You’re not alone, you’re never alone. You’ve got yourself, your spider buddy that eats any little bug, your family member or friend who isn’t there physically but they’re somewhere and they’re watching and caring and loving you, you’ve got people online you can talk to, crisis lines, therapy, friends and family. Maybe you’ll find yourself having a conversation with a stranger. You’re not alone. Here’s a hug 🤗. We can’t hug because of quarantine but you can save it for anytime you need it after quarantine

The sociological complexity of something like this is so dense. I can’t imagine living her life. Like how does it feel using a voice that in some part stems from your male biology, to lend power to a song about the struggle of finding your identity in a circumstance like hers? It must take incredible bravery to find and commit to your part in the struggle.

My partner showed me Against Me! a couple years back. I loved them, and never realized until about a year ago that they had an album titled, "Transgender Dysphoria Blues." I loved this album so much, and it really helped me when I feel I needed it most. Every song in this album touches my heart in a specific way. I'm so glad she put this out, and that I found it. Nick Wenger I know the feeling. I can not come out to my identified gender to my family, because unfortunately they are that narrow minded and I would be labelled as "sick" and "needing help" by them. I have a large support group online via certain games and gaming communities, so it does help a little bit. It was one of my friends from FFXIV that introduced me to this band.

+Nick Wenger I know the feeling, but as people have said, the world is changing. Bigotry is dying, slowly but surely. Its loud and angry, sure, but that's just the death cry of a group of people who are coming to realize just how irrelevant they are to the modern world. I know you left this comment four months ago, but I hope you've been staying strong since then. Life can be hard, but it can also be wonderful. You just have to stomach through the hate, and the shit and people who frankly aren't worth your time. If you can do that, you'll find friends and loved ones who make all of it worth it. I'm speaking from experience when I say this.
