"Yes, the song is a true story. My friend CC and I used to work at this bar in Gainesville called the Top. She was the bartender, I was the doorman. We used to hang out after closing, getting high, having drinks, listening to records. We both had each other's names tattooed. Life moved on and we fell out of touch. A little over a year ago I got a call telling me that she had been murdered. At the funeral her mother asked me to write a song for her, so I did."

Years after drifting apart, said friend thought that Grace had written “Thrash Unreal”about her, which is a song detailing an aging partier and drug addict. Although this was not true, Laura never got the chance to tell her friend this before her untimely passing. After the funeral, the friend’s mother] took me aside and told me that CC thought the song “Thrash Unreal” was written about her, that it had hurt and embarrassed her, that they had talked about itas recently as a week before her death. She made me promise on the spot to write a song that made up for it. So I didn’t sleep for about a week, until I wrote “Because Of The Shame”. The song itself is heavily influenced by Bruce Springsteen, particularly “No Surrender” as Grace and her friends would frequently listen to Springsteen while they were smoking.

I changed my My Views probably 6 months ago and I turn into a Republican and I see myself as a pussy ass poser but at the same time I see myself loving the bands I've always loved and if Tom Gabel or Laura Jane Grace wants to come up and give me a hug and give me some advice about life that I could take into consideration because I felt the same way he and or she did at one point in time but I grew out of it I don't know if it was the right a wrong move but I feel like I've done the right thing and I feel like you've done the right thing for yourself I don't agree with this transgender s*** but I love you as a person as a woman and as a man cuz I knew you as both end

Thank you for sharing this quote. As a vegetarian/vegan graduate PhD student at UF, I used to hang around The Top a lot (the ancho black bean cakes are the best!). I thought that the song was about the person you described. At the time, I knew Laura but called her Tom, Warren was still in the band and was a freegan pioneer, and I was dating a riot grrrl who was best known for the wide-scale circulation of her zines and her involvement with getting WFTA off the ground. G'ville will always have a special place in my heart!

The Lily Project its good that you work your recovery because if you're not working on recovery you are working on a relapse. however even though the song starts out talking about getting high its not about losing someone to addiction. it was written about an old friend who was in the wrong place at the wrong time and was murdered by being shot. when tom/laura called her mother to give condolences the mother asked him (@ the time he was still tom....not trying to be disrespectful by any means. trans rights all the way in my book and that starts by addressing them by the proper name and using the proper pronouns to suit the person) to write a song for her daughter who had remained a huge against me! fan despite them no longer being close.

I hope you're still going strong with your sobriety, as for me.... well.... I'm not doing so well, my demons are resilient, hateful little monsters that have their claws dug in much too deep in my scarred and bloody flesh to allow me the blissful and much longed for peace of a substance free day and a nightmare free night.... J CHURCH - Stupid lesson - there's a bad quality live version on an album. 2. JAWBREAKER - for esme, elephant, Gemini - there's some bad quality live versions floating around. 3. JETS TO BRAZIL - afterhour perfection, 6 song demo - afterhour perfection has a few good quality live videos out there, but there was an earlier version where it was it was "rockin" all the way through (does anyone have a studio version? I've heard it was recorded for "orange rhyming dictionary" but never found it.) I also need a good quality version of the 6 song demo, the one I have is really bad! Thanks guys

Yeah, you've got to do voice training or get VFS, which is costly and has a very long recovery time. Voice training is good for speaking, and works on pitch, resonance, and how you say certain sounds. However, with singing it's less applicable, just because of vocal range and all that. Although I would say some of her enunciation is a bit different.
@leeroth46453 жыл бұрын
@@fairguinevere666voice training can help with singing, if my friends are any example. i believe from what i've heard that laura just didn't want to alter it too much? she has a beautiful voice, like, insanely powerful, and if i were in her place i would love it too. she did change enunciation a bit, might just be getting older, or changing her style a bit, or personal preference. very striking! as a singer, she is a MASSIVE inspiration to me.

You left home for a fresh start, Working as a waitress down in Bradenton. With my name tattoo'd into your skin. Because of the shame I associate with vulnerability I am numbing myself completely. Can you hear me right now? I watched your mother bury you today, with tears in her eyes. It wasn't her words that shook me, it was the resemblance you shared. Don't it feel so detached and unreal? Don't it seem so far away? Like the past never happened, or like nothings ever changed. With your casket open in front of me, Your eyes closed and your lips silent. With my name tattoo'd into your skin. Because of the shame I associate with vulnerability I am numbing myself completely. Can you hear me right now? I watched your mother bury you today, with tears in her eyes. It wasn't her words that shook me, it was the resemblance you shared. I didn't listen to the preacher. I couldn't look your husband in the eyes. I'm not sure what I meant to you then, So I'm not sure what I owe you now. But if something I said hurt you I swear it was not my intention. With your name tattoo'd into my skin. Because of the shame I associate with vulnerability I am numbing myself completely. Can you hear me right now? Every lyric of every one of your tracks is amazing....can only imagine what it's like in that head of yours. I personally prefer your stripped down acoustic versions to the studio's but thats just me. Keep doing what you are doing Tom and you will always have a fan in me. Your music speaks on so many different levels and has been an inspiration to me. Thank you to you and the rest of the band for a great show in Chicago the other night. Come back anytime and see us again!!

why does noone care about the music anymore. these comments are ridiculous. who cares what they look like?! It's punk.

this makes me disheartened as well as in sure it does Tom to see that all anyone is talking about is this part of his/her personal life that has nothing to do with the music. lets comment on how we've listened to against me since high school or how the music's changed over the years or something cliché like that. That's what you see on every other good bands songs. 1st comment i read coming here was 'she's beautiful... And something about goin straight.' have any of these bandwagoners heard disco before the breakdown or reinventing axle rose?????

+JJ Weaver I got beef with the sex change only cause of the change in vocals due to hormone changes soul is still thee though for sure, just preferences in sound

+nubzar1 it's funny when he 1st said he was becoming a she I said damn now his vocal chords will change... that's gay. but I haven't noticed a difference except for in actual speech...?

+nubzar1 Hormones and Gender Reassignment Surgery don't affect trans women's voices. Change in voice comes with vocal lessons. It's also something that just changes over time for everyone.

This version is so much better than the studio version. You can really hear the emotion here in Laura's voice

Tom was handsome AF, and Laura is pretty AF. Just a beautiful human, inside and out.

The very best band I have ever heard and will probably ever hear in my life. I would write how much I love them but I don't have enough room in the post so all I will say is thank you to Against Me! for the amazing music. It has, in many ways, affected my life in a very positive way. (:
