As usual...a great vid. Thanks. Good to see you encouraging people to get their agar on. My 1st mentor pushed me to start playing with agar from day one and it was without a doubt the best thing I could have done. It is the Swiss Army Knife of the mycologist. Mush appreciation.

Yes! Most people think Agar work is a lot more complicated than it really is. I promote Mycology Self Reliance and Agar work is crucial for that. 😎👍🏼

@@KitchenMycology Sure is. Lovin the vibe you are putting out on your channel. Even pointed my mom your direction when she asked....how do you do all this? :)

Question.. do you only isolate when you notice contamination or is it a good practice to isolate a couple times regardless before inoculating the grain spawn jar? I thought I saw another channel talk about isolating a few times to ensure no contamination follows as well as to separate the strongest part of the mycelium growth.

That's correct. It's good practice to isolate and transfer the strongest and best looking mycelium a few times before inoculating with it. Then you can propagate that mycelium to several Agar plates and also save a plate (or a few plates) in the refrigerator to save your good genetics. I also have a video about Saving your Genetics. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJrUdqGcqpaeb5Isi=UaDbKlZWgtAdRuA3

I just started with agar. I have one that didnt do anything. 2 that have good mycelium growth. Then 1 that has a big area thats growing like crazy. But it does look white like the other 2 with mycelium. Its almost like a dirty white. So would that be contamination? Very good informational video brother. Thanks for the tips.

It's hard to tell without looking at it... They're all the same strain? If they are transfer a piece feom the best / healthiest looking oartnofnrhe brownish one and see how it does. And leave the one that's not showing growth alone and wait. Sometimes they're slow.
@davehanks7861
@davehanks7861 11 ай бұрын
@@KitchenMycology the two that seem to be doing really good are the same strain. The one that looks like it may be contaminated is a different strain than the 2 that are doing good but the same strain as the one not doing anything. So it probably wouldn't be a good idea to cross the strains, right?

@@davehanks7861 Who's on first? 😂 Yeah, don't mix and match... I was asking in case the one tats stalked was a slower growing strain, but I see now. Also, is it Spores to Agar? Or an Agar to Agar Transfer? Anyway, the stalled one may syltart later, or never. It happens. I'd transfer like I mentioned before, since it's a different strain than the ones that took off. Hopefully you can clean it up and get that one going. Keep me posted.

@@KitchenMycology I started with a spore syringe and use inoculation Loop to spread onto the agar. I'll be making transfers tomorrow from the 2 good plates.I think I'll leave the one that looks contaminated to see what happens. Thanks brother. I'll keep you posted

Yep! I like the simplicity of the SAB. I'm used to it and I don't use it enough to justify the cost and complication of a Laminar Flow Hood. 😎👍🏼

No association but booming acres, is way cheaper pre poured. With both the large and small pre poured agar.

The ones I found on Amazon from them don't have good reviews though. Only 3 stars.

@@KitchenMycology idk I've ordered directly from them. (BA) I didn't know they were on Amazon. I've ordered from Evviva on amazon. 5 of the 10 from Evviva were "leaking" although they sent me out another 5 plates right away. 2 of which came cracked, I gave up after that. Also booming acres sent me the wrong color pour once, but I've bought about 50 pre poured plates from them, the quality was always good, no contamination. I get the plastic "ketchup containers" now. If people have a good place to buy leave it in the comments.
