This is the original story, first published in Hound of Death. Movies are 'based on' Agatha Christie, then they flesh out the story - and yes, I agree, they often make it better!

@@Robbie_S not fashionable anymore but I really miss the smell of pipesmoke. Also, I remember watching the measured ritual of a man filling, tamping and lighting a pipe. The fireplace now, I have an electric one just for the visual effect. However, I also remember the tyranny of such a thing: the cutting and drawing of wood, splitting and stacking it, constantly bringing it from shed to house, poking and rearranging the fire while lit. And worse of all, kneeling on the cold stone hearth the next morning cleaning the beastly thing as a prelude to the war for warmth starting all over again

@@maryholden3136 I still burn wood in my fireplace, and have a woodpile in the yard. Once you have a nice blaze going, you go outside to get wet wood/snowy wood from the pile and put it right on the fire - it lasts longer that way. And I'm no spring chicken.
