The original was so good that I decided to become a lawyer when I first watched it at age 7. I ended up practising criminal defence law from my residence! Just like Sir Wilfred. What an influence Charles Laughton had on me. Still a great story BUT please watch the original. Definitely my favourite movie ever!

The script was identical in both films, but the Laughton film was new: we saw the play unfold with new eyes. This remake plays the action again and so may seem not quite as fresh. @bryancooke97983 жыл бұрын
@@tonypegler3618 Hi Tony, It's difficult, both productions are very good. The early one is in black and white. Marlena Dietrich is excellent and adds mystery, drama, and a first-class thrill factor. The later production had a lot to live up to but has a first-rate cast. If I was pushed for an answer I would choose the 1982 production. Agatha Christie deserves a mention as it is a fabulous bit of writing. Both worth a watch.

The casting was perfect with Ralph Richardson playing Laughtons role, Diana Rigg made a great Marlene Dietrich and surprisingly Beau Bridges accomplished his Innocent act as effectively as Tyrone Power. The addition of Donald Pleasence as the prosecutor and Wendy Hiller as the maid was the icing on the cake. I know there's a brand new one out but I can't bring myself to watch it. The Laughton version is superior. In this one, Patricia Kerr is TOTALLY miscast as the dragonish Miss Plimsoll. My favourite line in the older version is when Sir Wilfred becomes exasperated beyond expression with her and says: "Miss Plimsoll, if you were a woman, I would strike you!" In the original, Miss Plimsoll it's played by Laughton's real-life wife, the singularly UNattractive, pop-eyed Elsa Lanchester. But she is so good!!

Great movie. I'd seen it before as a young girl. To see it here again brought back memories of watching it with my mom on German TV many many years ago though it was a different version of the movie which was made earlier in 1957 with Tyrone Power, Marlene Dietrich, Charles Laughton.
