Is it just me who finds it extra amusing watching Splatty play intensive strategy games? He can handle the easier stuff, but when it comes to games that have the odds against you in huge ways, he gets distracted by things like trying to provide commentary. But that's why we love him, right?

honestly, one game I want is a *reverse* version of this - you are a lich raising undead armies and attempting to conquer a fantasy world region by region, and unconquered regions can attempt to retake neighboring conquered regions maybe have a skill tree for your lich to allow for different play styles, such as pure undead, corrupting the minds of the populace to get cultist units and damage enemy supply lines, summoning infernal units, geomancy for creating more sturdy defenses than what those pitiful mortals could build up, etc

the first thing to do is to reach the edge of the map to make sub bases (well lit). those bases are to be lightly defended (almost no danger, unless you make them on the horde's way. They provide lots of ressources (best mines and farming points) and are almost never attacked, so one or two towers are more than enough. Then, you make dense forts at key points with layer of towers, ballistas and one or two barracks to spam warriors during invasions. If you do it right, you can withstand anything.

19:33 This drives me nuts in They are Billions. Everything has to be at angles so you cannot make a vertical gate in that area. Instead you have to build like that and end up having a stress point that has to be extra fortified.

Sure, but for that I'd just make a regular wall which you *can* build vertically. Who cares if you dismantle it later?

i agree, the units bumping each other around is the only gripe. while formations would be a treat, i think an easier fix for the unit collision would be to give them some form of anchoring. like, either they can't be pushed or could only be a pushed a certain distance and possibly try to get back to their starting point, but that would start to get tricky. ultimately, i'd rather a unit get stuck and me have to deal with that than realize my archers are frontlining a defense when it's too late

yeah, i *wanted* to like They Are Billions, but couldn't get into the aesthetic, units, or the 3 wall limit. this game is quite a bit better, imo, and the updates keep making it better

@@StarCaptn I didn't for awhile but eventually I did and eventually really liked it. I got to the last level, however, at points it was quite difficult. 1 lone zombie could slip by and infect one of your houses in seconds and the infection would spread insanely fast.

@@StarCaptn The wall limit is the good thing. Just stacking millions of walls behind each other is so dumb imo. Aesthetic is of course, subjective. But i personally love Steampunk :)

I have played this game for over 60 hours. I love the setting, gameplay (in its current state), and the graphics style. It is a bit mindless where you play till you die, but I have a lot of fun with it.

u didnt see that the gates automatically open when a troop walks by? you set them to patrol past the gates and they all open when ur archers walk by.

I agree that the game would probably be made better by a formation or grouping command, and that this a better version of 'They are Billions'. It almost reminds me of Red Alert 2 with the units and combat style and seems to scratch that itch for a good top down RTS. It'll be going on the wishlist with a follow to see how the development plays out. Nice playing Splat, and as always great video.

This is definitely my favourite game in this genre. It’s just so well put together. Alien Marauder is also worth a look. Definitely agree about the formations, was thinking that while I was playing it earlier. Would be great if you could get frontline sentinels, spears behind them and then archer behind the spears, while catapults rain down on the charging enemies. Would just make the experience that much more tight and engaging. Maybe some cavalry units can be worked in some how as well? Good video dude!

I'm not thrilled about the lack of punishment for not leaving military forces to guard your home. Especially since these aren't plague style zombies but necromantic undead who have a vested interest in destroying your village. They are billions seems to have a little bit of a better AI in this respect.

At later stages of the matcj, there will be punishment for that, but it is almost negligible. a small group of Archers can deal with the threat while you explore "safely" the rest of the map

On higher difficulties the enemies will roam at night and if the fog is within your base it is possible for enemies to spawn and attack you.

Unit collision was an issue in They Are Billions, too, as I recall. Both games would benefit from making unit formations. I don't know why neither game offers that. Maybe it's just too hard to code? I don't know anything about coding, so I don't know how hard that would be.

That kind of thing is going to be very dependent on the individual pathfinding systems in the game's backend (RTS pathfinding is a surprisingly complex thing to deal with). So yes, formations are very easy to code in a general sense, but that doesn't say anything about whether it's feasible or even possible in any particular game.

I would've loved if the walls are thicker and towers bigger so you can house archers on top like in stronghold. Keeping the melee behind the gates just in case they break through instead of having them charge out the gates and get surrounded. I'll probably skip this.

As great as procedural generated maps are, you can't built a campaign set on well balanced, intentionally designed maps. I have no issue with procedural maps but I prefer them as an addition, not a replacement to a good campaign.
