Nice use of Shifting Sands! When I was younger, I would always use it to send villagers to the green cities to save them. No real reason to, but it was fun fighting the army.

That does sound fun!

You can actually kill them pretty easily but it's actually not scripted for you to win until you get the Guardian oddly enough.

Man, that teleportation trick was dope! Trying age of Mythology for the first time (used to play AOE 2), this playlist is goated

Thank you! I hope some of these strategies help

Would like to see a Guardianless speedrun attempt at this. Cool video still.

I actually used shifting sands to get villagers to the third village and killed the army with priests and petsuchos, but it actually turns out the trigger checking if Kemsyt's Army is dead doesn't work until you get the Guardian. Bit of a letdown

I do believe that the Guardian is actually loosely inspired by Anubis's role as the "Guardian of the Scales" as the guardian resembles anubites and Anubis himself. There are also apparently thousands of minor deities known as the "Gate Guardian Deities of the Underworld." Still no idea where the sword or the son of osiris and cerberus things come from. With what little I have I'd guess that Anubis, a god of the dead, might want to help / be associated in some way with Osiris, and maybe he doesn't want the Titans released from the underworld because of that? That's the flimsiest reason though. And for some reason the Guardian is in this random city instead of guarding the entrance to the underworld seen in Where They Belong. It is guarding one of the Osiris pieces at least.

As you say, it's the flimsiest connection. To me it just feels like they made up a generic fantasy guardian and got lucky in that one of Anubis's many titles in one of many versions happens to include the word 'Guardian'

Well played with the sandshifting. I played this game many times but i never thought about using the shiftsand. Thanks for sharing mate.

It was never explained why the Guardian is forgotten about as soon as you finish the mission. At least with the New Atlantis campaign Ajax briefly mentions it, but here he just conveniently disappears without a word about it.

I always thought of it as the guardian not being able to leave the city it guards for some reason
@Melth3 жыл бұрын
That would be a decent explanation, they just never gave it anywhere.

I think war elephants are good at defense, specifically protecting gold miners from a small raid. They can also destroy smaller amounts of units and, if you can get them inside, are effective at destroying buildings. But their enormous cost and very slow speed means they are often a bad idea. They are similar to siege towers and Heliopolii in that they are useful in the right circumstance, but usually worthless. Of course if your enemy is Egypt or Norse, get ready for camelry or jarls.

There’s that flying transport myth unit, the bird thing? Maybe with one of those to airlift elephants directly in the target, it would be worth it

That's an interesting idea! Those things aren't super fast themselves of course

damn son! the move you pulled with the sands of time or shifting sands, i forgot the name, damn!! how long you invested in each mission to find all of this?
@Melth3 жыл бұрын
Not as long as you might think. I usually start with a run where I just scout the map a bit to understand the layout and think about what kind of tricks would be possible. Then I try out my tricks and see what I can do to perfect them.

You set the speedrun record on titan for this mission because you figured this sneaky god power use (www.speedrun.com/aom/Light_Sleeper#Titan for reference)! You can add your time on this site.
@Melth3 жыл бұрын
That's interesting to know. I think I set a couple of other records on various missions as I went along, though in at least one case someone else later beat my record.

Wow dude nice world record. I wonder if anyone managed to break it since.
@Melth2 жыл бұрын
I'm sure someone has by now. Afterall, I started the mission going slowly to take 0 casualties, etc. It would be easy to just rush through and save several minutes that way.

Iirc elephants were used as far back as Alexander the Great. India gave him about a dozen war elephants.
@Melth Жыл бұрын
He also faced quite a few war elephants and his men had trouble with them, yeah. So no doubt they were already well established in India by that time.

This was always one of my favorite missions as a kid. I always wanted it to keep going after getting the Guardian and just use it to crush more stuff, but the enemies usually suicided to it and ended the mission too fast.
