Classic sword and shield Imperials (and to a slightly lesser degree the spear and gunner variants) are some of my favorite units across all of Warhammer Fantasy, AOS and 40k just for, as you said, the fact that in this utterly bonkers world they are the normal dudes just grabbing a bit of metal and tugging out to face unimaginable horrors with nothing, but a breast plate, a bit of music, a crude weapon and their mates on either side of them! Like every time I see art of trolls or demons or whatever else smashing up Imperial jobbers, my first thought is not, "Oh cool, look at this bad a*s monsters!" Its, "Damn! Imagine being THAT GUY who, looking at that bad a*s monster rather then running away prepared to stand firm with his pals to fight it!"

Lately got into this channel and i really enjoy it! The thing is I only care about the lore videos. If there was a playlist with all the lore videos inside, i could just let that run instead of always looking for the next one after finishing one. It might appeal to others aswell, who are really (and only) interested in the lore/factions of AOS.
@@2Tough thank you very much for pointing that out to me! Strangely i didnt find this list in the playlist tab on your profile ... Well im pretty happy to have it now though! You'll have my upvotes thats for sure.

You hit the nail-on-the-head , while all these crazy races and factions and running about, while all the mind blowing events are taking place - what are the ordinary citizens doing? What's happening in their lives, cities and lands? What do the places they live look like? The Freeguilds give us the chance to really build the world out and provide context for the events in the Age of Sigmar. Sigmar is pulling heroes from somewhere and here we get a chance to see where.

I wasnt really an Empire fan back during Fantasy but I really love the Cities of Sigmar faction. The 7 free cities and the different races have so much potential for conversions and themed armies. I play Hammerhal and the theme of the different races of Order fighting under one banner really appeals to me. I used the Shadow Warriors kit and some Greatsword bits to build a mixed human-aelf shadow warrior unit, to show how the different races fight side by side. I also got Aventis Firestrike. Not because of his power on the battlefield but just so that I can field THE Magister of Hammerhal.

Man, hearing that the Freeguild can be any race makes me super happy. I have plans to start a Living City army. I had some Glade Guards before they got discontinued. I've been thinking about using them as Freeguild Crossbowmen. Super happy to hear that's actually fairly fluffy.
@PaintPlastic4 жыл бұрын
A good video, but I think a couple of things need clarification. Firstly, while the largest known free cities are inhabited by a variety of races, there's isn't really any evidence for the notion that freeguilds are composed of a mixture of races based on the sources we have. On the contrary, the symbols of the 12 tribes that the book mentions are clear references those used by different parts of the empire in the world-that-was. Further, tensions and sub-identities do still persist between races despite fighting under a common banner - the CoS book makes it clear that the darkling covens and order serpentis for example long to reclaim their own lost territories and their working under Sigmar is simply a means to an end. For another example, look at the greywater fastness story in the CoS book, wherein the duardin artillery crews consider themselves too proud to rely on the help of the freeguild of the same city, calling them a bunch of jack-a-dandies lol
@2Tough4 жыл бұрын
So i based this off the freeguild section of the battletome. In that section, talking specifically about the Freeguild it does in fact say that theres a mix of races. Furthermore, your examples of racial tension are all things that exist outside of the context of just the Freeguild, which again, this video is limited to. I know that those other subfactions have tension
@PaintPlastic4 жыл бұрын
@@2Tough It's really just a single line on pg 34 para 2 that exists to contextualise before the freeguilds are even mentioned by name . . . its a bit of a stretch. Again, on the contrary you have phrases like "the soldiers’ common humanity" among a variety of other clues that don't really fit into the idea of them being of a mixture of races.

Wouldn’t the sons of noblemen be more likely to afford a horse and pistols, or a title of knighthood and a Demigryph Mount? Or at the very least, a suit of plate armor and a greatsword. And the appropriate training I straight up don’t believe that, if these be human men, that the “sons of noblemen will stand next to beggers” in any military ever lol
@Crozierization4 жыл бұрын
I’m just saying. We haven’t achieved an equitable society here in a world without Chaos Demons. They SURE AS SHIT do not have an equitable society over there in the Mortal Realms lol
@mcnarth4524 жыл бұрын
Id let it slide as potentially true meritocracy. consider, the cost of failure isnt death, its garaunteed eternal slavery and torture for your wives and children and their children ect. so maybe the nobles could more easily afford horses and such. but if they cant ride or shoot for shit, their ass is sheild infantry.

It’s actually something that came up in an older warhammer fantasy book if you can believe it (one of the tie ins to age of reckoning) where a pistollier resents having to listen to a captain who is “low born”, presumably the captain got to where he is via veterancy.

ARE YOU HYPE FOR SERAPHON NEW LORE!!!???
@heathenpride79314 жыл бұрын
Gonna be blunt here I’ve never bought the whole “humans, Elves, and dwarves all get together just fine”. I mean just look at America. Blacks & Whites have been here as a race for centuries and there’s still hardcore race division and tension. And we’re all humans! Imagine adding a dwarf’s violence or an elf’s hubris into it.
@Nitschkeish4 жыл бұрын
Yet the USA is the first economy and military power on the world. Some internal strife is unavoidable. Race, religion, ideas, politics... We don't care. We will find a way to argue. Elves, humans and dwarves collaborating is possible and even though there will be strife, the good stuff that comes of it is more than the bad. Plus there are stormcast to pacify if things get ugly. But still, not needed because chaos and Nagash is enough to make those three races cooperate or else
@heathenpride79314 жыл бұрын
Serafín It would be one thing for there to be acknowledged tension, but at least according to this summary there’s not even that. Also, did something change with Sigmar? Back in Fantasy the dude was a barbaric Warlord who built an empire by pushing out everyone that was his tribe. He would even raid other humans besides his own tribe. Then he fucked off to go on his own adventure without regard for what his people would do without him. When did he suddenly care for humanity as a whole, never mind other races like Elves and Dwarves? When did he decide to stop being Conan and start being Charlemagne?

No, there's a huge amount of possibilities with the human factions. Chaos humans are far more diverse and interesting now. Look at some of the lore and art about what humans are capable of now. Making massive mechanical fortresses and constructs; grand prosperous cities; and even more powerful arcane colleges and orders etc. It's just, Order humans need their own tome and model range to be developed more. They'll get it this year probably.
@Alittlefruitgoesalongway4 жыл бұрын
Maybe first edition AOS but not anymore. The humans are doing pretty sweet things, and if you read some of the Black Library novels involving them, like books about the cities, they play a big role.
@H2409094 жыл бұрын
Red Stone Can’t say I agree. Humans are building all sorts of crazy stuff in the lore. Clock work fortresses, floating cities, and in some cases living buildings. Now it’s not just the elves and dwarves who build all the impressive shit. Plus they are always front and center in any stories involving the free cities, or any of the witch hunter stories.
@BUSSTISEBOOST4 жыл бұрын
Chris Palumbo their Battletome could have been a little better I think. I wasn’t all that fancy over the WHFB factions getting ripped apart and the survivors being scattered into their own sub factions.
@Alittlefruitgoesalongway4 жыл бұрын
@@BUSSTISEBOOST I agree that it wasn't perfect, but I'm really happy that they actually released it. To me it feels like GW is listening better and has been going in a better direction as a company lately. At least compared to when they did the end times and the following few years, I can't speak as to what they were like decades ago. They still aren't doing things perfectly perhaps but I feel like they are taking the game in the right direction now. At least in terms of AOS. I got into the hobby sometime during 1st edition AOS, and so I didn't have a lot of connection to Fantasy, though I certainly understand why people wouldn't like how that world got torn apart. I do really enjoy AOS and so I'm glad that the game exists, but I do agree that they probably didn't change directions into this game nearly as well as they could have. It's never fun to have an army that you loved suddenly become irrelevant or basically unplayable in the game. Hopefully they continue to update and fix those older factions still as they release new ones.
