AI has moved into a new era - from chatbots to AI agents capable of having instantaneous, real-time conversations as showcased by Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s GPT-4o and Google’s Project Astra. The news is also bullish for Nvidia and over chipmakers, but Meta, Amazon, Apple and other megacap tech names will have to step up to the plate soon. Was playing with GPT-4o using it as a translator on the free version, man it is unreal. This will be a go-to application for any traveler to have real time back and forth voice translation (including written transcript) in multiple languages. Beyond useful, no more getting stranded trying to work out how to get somewhere or use some ticketing machine in the depths of a foreign country.

And the new voice mode isn't even out yet. Were you testing the translation with the current old voice chat mode that has ~1-3 seconds delay? The current voice capabilities of GPT-4 and GPT-4o are already pretty good, and these have been out for months now. Once the new voice mode, where you will also be able to turn on your camera like in the recent demos, releases in the next couple weeks and you can have true human-like back and forth conversations, this is going to be even more insane for uses like this.

Great video, but GPT-4o and Project Astra are advanced AIs, not true AI agents, as they lack full autonomy and real-time learning. However, true agency likely IS coming soon.

IMO agents with multiple models makes more sense. You use different models for different purposes. You can already do that. Give the agents a task and let them go to work and when the task is complete you have a reflection phase where it can learn from itself.

AI agents refers to the concept of an AI system that can plan, reason, and act in the world. Project Astra and GPT-4o are not considered AI agents. On the other hand, the more advanced search capabilities and some email integrations shown by Google are considered agents. For example, an agent searching email to find relevant receipts, extract the data into a spreadsheet and provide insights and charts is a simple form of AI agent.

One glaring difference between these agents and "her" is that that AI in the movie was running on the device. With current hardware, we are not even close to running these powerful models fully on a mobile device.

CNBC host Deirdre Bosa has asked a lot of extremely sharp questions, but Sundar almost never answered most of them. She asked how he will now answer to the advertiser as AI answer has been put first instead of the adv user, and whether Google will sue openAI on using youtube video, and openAI GPT4o already usable by user while google Astra still need to wait till end of year..all these are very sharp questions, well done. But of course Sundar again avoid all of them like what he did in the Bloomberg Original interview from Emily. It's kind of lame from Sundar to keep giving useless answer like that.

These systems are missing motivation, planning and ability to have no limits, so they will remain as tools with limited potential, potential to experiment like a researcher or athlete or child, as humans with almost no boundaries and limits. The a.i. may also be limited by inability to dream which is a dataset humans enjoy for learning and advancement probably. Just saying i wonder what happens with an a.i. system that does not want or care to cure cancer, create new symponies, or create new gourmet recipes, or brainstorm new ideas for 3d printing of rockets from self sustainable captive energy resources and materials. I suppose the ai. Cam transcend into 3 dimension via what we can robots, and do more visible things. But lets see what happens in the coming years. Maybe the cognitive systems we know as humans will be replaced by an ai discovery and advancement in a less regulated environment and it will then self iterate to singularity.
