Back in 2002 the Duggal lab in NYC did this same thing with a half dozen rolls of Kodak Supra 400 I shot while visiting the city. They caught the mistake while scanning the negatives and not only didn’t charge me anything but also reimbursed me for the fllm! Took a bit of work to finesse the color palette into acceptable shape, but it all worked out okay.

I think that overall my images are still keepers, but I was definitely disappointed. I am definitely going to teach myself how to develop colour negs at home though, at least then the mistakes are my fault and no one else's! Thanks for watching and for sharing your experience, definitely makes me feel better!

Nice video. For sure you have a gift for filming interesting episodes of your life as well a good eye for photography. I think the last part was hilarious and certainly very appropriate for what you described as “idyllic lifestyle”. Please keep this videos coming!

Quality wins every time over quantity in my opinion, and there is an audible "Yay!!" when I see you have posted a video. You also don’t have to apologise for being what in my opinion is a 'real' photographer, one who is passionate about their work. I'll be honest, even though it’s 50 years since my father gave myself an my older brother and sister an Instamatic 50 each, I can't remember pushing or pulling any colour film. I’ve lived a very sheltered life. A brilliant and very interesting video, I really enjoyed it, thank you.

I've been pushing film for a while now, mostly b&w, but I have never pulled film... I don't really see a reason to personally, and I think this experience makes me want to pull even less. But I love to experiment, and I'm constantly learning new things, which will help me evolve as a photographer so I can't really complain! I think that as long as you love what you are doing, then you're doing it right! Thanks for watching!

I think it caused not by film development but by scan. Scanner software often use autobalance to invert color negatives. Algorithm expect to find something perfectly black and white within frame to apply it's measurements. But in frame where almost everything is green it quickly became useless.

I find sometimes I get random oddball results of rolls of C41...not sure if its a lab processing/old chemical thing or what, but it happens.I have a Noritsu scanner here at home, and the results vary greatly depending on the settings I want (boosting shadows, restricting highlights etc)...keep up the cool vids when you get time!!! Shooting film shouldn't be a pressure thing, it should be a fun thing! Love your work!!!

What beautiful shots, Jess. So great to capture the monarchs. Those apples were huge and gorgeous. Strange that the lab would make that mistake, but you did a great job getting them back. That ending. Oh wow. 😂

Yeah, it was just one of those silly mistakes... the customer before me was discussing Vista 200 with the tech and I guess he had it in his head that my film was the same and I didn't double check before sending it off. Oh well, it made for an interesting learning experience! I couldn't resist putting in the ending, although now everyone knows I have a very basic sense of humour, lol! Thanks for watching! Those apples were quite delicious too!

I´m gonna add a little bit of confusion here: this is not Agfa Vista 400, that was discontiuned in 2004/2005. This isn´t AgfaPhoto Visa 400 either, that was discontinued in 2012/2013. But it is AgfaPhoto Vista Plus 400! 3 different filmstocks: Agfa, Ferrania, Fuji. Sadly, the last version is also discontinued now, since 2018. Great video, by the way, I really like it!

I knew the moment you mentioned what happened to your film that it was a screw up at the lab.That's why I develop all my own films.That way, if there's a screw up, I can only blame myself. Colour and B&W. It's a pity Agfa have gone out of the film business, for the most part. You can still get some of their B&W films, if you look for them. But they don't make colour film anymore. I used to like Vista 200 and 400. They were good films. Now, if you find a brick of the film online, the cost has gone through the roof!!! Even a single pack is expensive. Speaking about developing film, have you seen the Filmomat film developing machine? I'd love to own one, but they cost something like 5000-6000 Euros (about $7500, or so). Mind you, they'd be worth it. Although, doing it by hand isn't all that hard, just tedious sometimes :D

Lovely video and beautiful shots, I am not a fan of Agfa Vista but you have made it shine beautifully even with the lab issue! I have yet to find a lab that does a good job on developing film, sadly even the pro ones! My last two roll of C41 has bad streaks on it (from a pro lab), it's like they didn't let the film dry completely or something, and I know it wasn't my camera or the film. I am still searching for a good place.

Totally worth the wait and as others are saying, quality over quantity every time. You can tell you are a storyteller just remember that some stories take longer than others, that's all. I had passion flowers in my back garden some years ago now. A very pretty flower to look at. I got into developing my own film earlier this year due to a roll getting lost in the post (my fault entirely). It's a lot easier than you think. You just need a developing kit and a daylight changing bag, plus the chemicals obviously.
@JessHobbs

I know I don't actually need a darkroom to process film, I just need the funds to get started up at home! I also have 3 cats, so I'm a little concerned with them and storing chemicals, and I am concerned with getting cat hair in my developing tanks (because cat hair goes EVERYWHERE!!). But I am working towards setting myself up at home, I always used to develop my own b&w films, and I can learn how to develop colour as well. Thanks so much for the kind words, I really appreciate them, and thanks for watching!
@Tinderchaff
@Tinderchaff 6 жыл бұрын
Ahh, cats!! Yes, cat hair does that. I have had cats in the past so I know what that's like. I keep my chemicals on top of the kitchen cupboards. Still not entirely sure if that is cat proof :D. At the moment I'm developing black and white. If/when you get into colour developing I'd love to see how you do it. I know temperature is more of an issue and there are more stages with more chemicals, but that is about it. Anyways, thanks for replying :)

I was thinking that I could maybe store the glass bottles in a sealed plastic bin to help with any possible fumes, but I have nowhere cat hair proof to hang up my negatives after... I'm trying to work out the logistics, but I can't wait to get back to processing my own films! Maybe I'll do a video on colour developing someday!

I thought developing color neg film is a standard process (C-41)?? What a lab is that??

It is a standard process, which is why I was so surprised at the results. Unless it's pushed or pulled which could explain the color shift. If she shot it at 400 and it got developed at 200 the color would change slightly, that's a super common thing with color negatives.
@JessHobbs
@JessHobbs 6 жыл бұрын
@@djnato10 that's exactly what I thought had happened! I shot it at 400, but got results back as if it had been pulled one stop. I have never developed my own colour film, so I hadn't realized that it was actually a pretty simple process, but all of the issues I outlined in my video are consistent with the film being pulled. Thanks to you both for the info, and thanks for watching!

all c41 films develop at same time and temperature (when shot at rated box speed)
@JessHobbs
@JessHobbs 5 жыл бұрын
I am aware of that, but what happened at the lab is that they thought I had shot it at ISO 200 rather than at box speed, so it was pull-processed. Vista 400 is a film that I know really well, and I have never had that issue before. But that's okay, lesson learned, now I need to learn how to process my own colour negs at home! Thanks for watching!

I tried Vista 400 some time back and the results were terrible. I already figured out that it must have been due to bad processing and scanning, but i never touched that film since then (I'm mainly shooting b&w anyway). But it teached me how important it is to hand your film over to professionals rather than mega-labs. It's good to know that this film can lead to amazing results, even though it's very cheap. (Especially here in germany.. it's a drug store classic and you can get it for 3-4 EUR per roll.) Thanks for this video. It was, as always, a fun to watch and informative. :)
@JessHobbs
@JessHobbs 6 жыл бұрын
I usually really enjoy shooting Vista, and I've never had any issues with having it processed until this time. I did go to a professional lab, these results were unfortunately just due to human error. The customer in front of me was discussing Vista 200 with the tech, so I guess he had it in his head that I had the same film, and I didn't double check before sending it off. Moments like this make me wish I could process my own film at home, I just don't have the space to set up, but hopefully that will change! Thanks for watching!

It doesn't matter if the film is 400 or 200 speed, all c-41 films are processed the same. I process my own c-41 and it's nice to be able to just throw everything in the tank together.
@JessHobbs
@JessHobbs 6 жыл бұрын
@@tapiopitkaranta7667 that's really interesting information... as you can see I have never processed my own C-41 films, just b&w, so I didn't realize that colour films are all processed at the same time. Which now opens up a whole new set of questions as to what happened! When I researched what pulled colour film looks like, I got all of the same characteristics as I described in my video, so I thought for sure that was the issue. If this was a new film type for me, I just would have said it's not a very nice film and been done with it, but I have gotten consistently great results in the past, which further leads to my confusion. Anyways, I am rambling on now, but thanks for the info and thanks for watching!
@tapiopitkaranta7667
@tapiopitkaranta7667 6 жыл бұрын
C-41 can indeed be pushed or pulled (usually not pulled as most c-41 films can take a couple of stops over exposure) but I doubt a normal lab would have ever done it. There's many more ways to screw up though :) Their developer temp might have been off or too old or contaminated chemicals.
@Flying_Basset
@Flying_Basset 6 жыл бұрын
I've never tried 400, but I shot a lot of Vista 200. It's kinda "meh" and I only use it because it's the cheapest film here (3-roll packs are cheaper than one roll of HP5+). Also, none of the current "Agfa" films are actually made by Agfa - the colours are (or were) made by Fuji and b&w by Ilford. Agfa still makes aerial surveillance and micro films which are sold under various brands like Rollei and JCH.
