Aggressive Bears on the Appalachian Trail? - 14 mile hike to Spence Field Shelter

Join us on our last day in the Smoky Mountains as we hike from Cades Cove to Spence Field shelter along the Appalachian Trail only to discover that a recent aggressive bear attack happened soon before. The shelters were closed and the National Park Service Rangers were stalking a Black Bear who had bitten a hiker while in his tent. Never have food in your tent in bear country. Food must be hung 10' from the ground and 4' from the trees to avoid these scary confrontations.
Total hike = 14 mile loop

This couldn't have happened at a worse time. Thank you beyond expression if you can help us achieve our goal of getting a new camera.

When I was younger and healthier, I hiked these very trails. I recognized some scenes in your video, particularly trail markers. I served as a pastor in a nearby mountain village. Now that I am older and wheelchair bound, I thank you for allowing me to tag along with you. It was a wonderful, nostalgic experience.

LOL! They are not gonna live that long if they don't stay out of those mountains with no gun or dogs :) I live there! Been going in there for 40 years, trapping and hunting gold. Course we don't do trails, have to go cross country. Not for the city folks. Talking dead reckoning and compass work. But bears are easy to kill once you know how. It's the coy wolf packs, cougars, and Russian Boar you have to watch. Not everything that will eat you is a bear :)

Beautiful visuals on your video/hike.. thank you for sharing! But.. They euthanized the wrong bear? Not cool. Bummed to hear that. All creatures have the right to exist. Do no harm. I encountered a huge Black bear 2 years ago on a hike. We spotted each other at the same time, when we were about 30 ft apart, It was heading straight to the little river island i had been meditating on and was still standing on. I thought i was about to be killed by a bear. I averted my eyes and turned my back. The bear disappeared and i was able to hike the 3 miles back to the car. That Bear did not mess with me and I am forever grateful so i have to speak up when i hear about Black Bears being wrongfully killed. May we all co~exist in honor, reverence and harmony. Peace and blessings to you all ♡

Averting eyes is wrong. You better well be looking at that bear. This foolishness of not looking a bear in the eye is dumb. Like they can tell you are looking at their eyes instead of their rear end, legs, etc. Listen to expert Dr. Tom Smith's videos. He ought to know.

My highschool football team hikes to rocky top every summer with the senior class. This past summer I was part of that group. 2nd day of the hike we reached Rocky Top and started to head down to Cade's Cove. We had a designated campsite, which I believe you showed in the video that we were supposed to sleep at. Problem is, it was closed due to aggressive bear activity. The other issue is that we had no where else to sleep if we went on to Cade's Cove, which was an hour away. It was getting dark and our coaches decided it was best to stay at the campsite. Just so happens that in the middle of the night, I was woken up by a bear protruding it's face into the side of my tent. I also have to mention i had no food in my tent whatsoever. I yelled bear and everyone else then yelled bear, scaring it away. One of the worst experiences of my life.

There’s roughly 1 fatal attack every 8-10 years. The ATC claims nearly 3million visited the trail this year, this means that nearly 1 in 24-30million chance you will be involved in a fatal bear attack. Since 1974 there have been 10 murders by humans on the trail.

Crazy about Spence Field. I actually stayed there on the first night of a 4 day trip on Nov 29th and read about it in the registry but it wasn't as specific about what happened. Anyone who has been to Spencefield should read the book "Our Southern Highlanders" by Horace Kephart. When he lived in those mountains, there were plenty of places without trees where headers would bring cattle and the shelters that were build were for the shepherds. Several things happened while Kephart live up in the mountains, including him finding a lame hiker from Canada that was lost, a pile of cattle that had been hit by lightning, a murder at Spencefield cabin by a slow boy who had carried a gun and on a dare, shot a man on horseback. Years after Kephart, a boy named Dennis Martin disappeared from there. Ive camped there twice myself.

Question:. Since I like to hike at times, and I live in an area where black bear are, I will be purchasing some bear spray. I heard that there is this little bell contraption that is a bear deterrent. Have you heard of this or is someone yanking my chain? If it does exist, does it work?

The Smoky Mountain national park's most famous missing person was on this very trail. Little 6 year old Dennis Martin and family hiked from Cades Cove up to Russell Field shelter and stayed the night. The next day they went on to Spence Field. At Spence Field the family stopped awhile and little Dennis went to hide in the bushes to scare his dad and simply vanished! This was in 1969. He was never found.

Ticks scare me more than Bears ever will. We don't have access to brown bears or black bears or anything like that where we live. We have to travel to Big Bend area. There is plenty in the first couple miles, but once you go up up up the water is nowhere near. Until you get to the Spence Field Shelter. There is a resupply of water near that. About 8.5 miles in from Anthony creek trail head

They had to euthanize a bear who bit hikers leg while eating inside of his tent. They do that as a standard procedural precaution preventing other hikers from getting injured by a blood hungry bear. It's not unusual

Didn't see any, but the rangers were there trying to track the one that had recently bitten a hiker who was eating in his tent. They had euthanized the wrong bear and were trying to catch the correct one. Notice the question mark at the end of this title. We were hoping to encounter a bear, or two, but didn't. Thanks for watching.

Gun won't work. No one can aim when they are in panic mode. Spray is preferred. Much wider range. We don't fear black bears. We have them here in TX. Our rule of thumb...Never avoid a great experience in nature just because there are predators in the area. But that's just us. Thank you for watching.

@@StateParkers 1-"Guns won't work." LOL!!! It's a good thing bear hunters that I know haven't heard that. Their guns work just fine. Pro tip: never trust the opinion of people who don't own guns, regarding guns. 2- How well does that bear spray work when the attacking bear happens to be upwind from you, or in the rain, or both? 3- Anyone who is prone to panic should NOT be in the forest, period. 4- On a final note, hope is not a plan. I sincerely wish you both the best of luck; you absolutely need it.

@@adambaum5824 well we live in central Texas. Not one bear to worry about for hundreds of miles. Cougars and wild hogs are a more worrisome threat to us. Hell, ticks and fire ants scare us more than any of it. Everybody has an opinion and that is totally alright. Thanks for the comment and view. @@StateParkers I live in Pennsylvania and spend quite a bit of time in the forest. The current PA state record Black Bear is 879 pounds. Three 800+ pound bears have been killed in PA, one of them in an area in which I hike and camp regularly. I personally have seen bears in there that I guarantee are over 500 pounds. I honestly wish you the best of luck. Keep up the good work making videos.

This incident happened in Apshawa Preserve in West Milford, NJ in Sep 2014. Unfortunately; the victim and the group of friends with whom he was hiking encountered a black bear that was exhibiting stalking behavior towards the group. They took some photos of the bear as it approached and then decided to run as it got closer, thereby triggering the bear's predatory instinct to chase them. Essentially; they made themselves look like prey with tragic results for one of the group.

Bob johnson it wasn’t a boy and he didn’t get “eaten”. It was a group of hiking college students and he ran from the bear and the bear stalked and attacked him. The only recorded fatal bear attack in NJ.

There is or was a KZbin video of that story with the pictures they took of it stalking them. It was seriously stalking them. I can understand them panicking eventually. None of us who never experienced anything like that can say what we would have done.

@@AnnaC63 The group of 4 young college students were warned by a couple headed in the opposite direction as they retreated from the bear that there was a bear ahead and that these men should be careful. This bear did not retreat from the couple when they spotted it, so they were leaving the area to avoid it. The 4 men decided to see if they could get a look at the bear, and as the bear approached the group, the 4 men scattered in different directions. One of the men was killed. His phone was retrieved and there were some photos of the bear on it. There were also some bite marks on the phone.
